20.01.2022 Richmond Valley Council are asking for responses to the Casino To Bentley Masterplan Draft. This is where they are ripping up the railway tracks for a bike path... and yet there is no explanation of why they can't put the rail trail/bike path next to the track. Please send them a comment. 13.01.2022 Hot days ahead! Perfect for long-distance cycling on the proposed rail trails! It's been hot hot hot all day today and yesterday (36C) in Casino and Bentley, the heads of the proposed Casino to Bentley Rail Trail. The sad reality is that the proposed rail trail just won't be used. The destruction of rail infrastructure mostly in good condition for this hopelessly flawed plan is utterly unjustified and nothing short of vandalism. All one has to do is look at the weather condi...tions of Bentley/Casino and Byron Bay to see exactly why this rail trail has Buckley's chance of being even slightly popular on a sustained basis. Rail trail advocates tell me that "the rail trail will be most popular in the afternoon when it's cooler". Well, at 5pm in Bentley, well and truly afternoon, it's still a very warm 30 degrees. Even at 5pm! Compare that to Byron Bay where weather is still cool and comfortable at all times of the year, even on days like today when Bentley is hot as hates. This climate discrepancy is the reason the proposed Casino to Bentley rail trail, or any rail trail west of Byron Bay, will fail miserably. No tourist in their right mind would forgo a lighthouse walk, rainforest walk, the beach, etc to spend an hour or so driving out to Bentley just to spend hours pushing pedals, then to turn around and do it all again. I'll leave you to be the judge on whether spending $17 million to rip up rail infrastructure that remains mostly in good condition is justified. If you're a ratepayer in Richmond or Lismore LGA's, perhaps this is something you may want to consider as you'll have to pay for it in the end. Make no mistake, the community is being taken for a ride here. If they do not realise that now, they will realise it in a few years time when their rates are being spent on something they don't use, don't want, didn't ask for, and deeply regret allowing to happen.
10.01.2022 Byron Shire Echo today 4th Nov 2020. We have seen this year with the Qld Border closures how the cross border region extends much further south than just Tweed Heads. The day that the Byron Shire was included in the Qld border bubble it was packed with Qld day trippers.
06.01.2022 Byron Bay Railway Precinct- old steam train filling point has been restored to its original glory. Photos thanks to Geoff Bensley. Byron council has the lease on the railway land around the old main Byron railway station and a bus interchange is being constructed.
