24.01.2022 So I ordered a U-shaped toothbrush a couple of weeks ago and tried it out on my two kids. I'm not sure how it didn't occur to me before I tried, but I honestly did not anticipate how much toothpaste would be required to even come close to reaching all surfaces of all teeth. The tiny amount I usually use was completely inadequate to reach even the inside and outside surface of one tooth in one arch! I then gave the kids disclosing tablets before they brushed their teeth with ...the U-shaped toothbrush for 45 seconds. If you don't know what disclosing tablets are, they essentially show up all the bacteria or plaque in your mouth like a neon beacon. The amount of toothpaste that remained on the brush that did not even contact any tooth surface at all was a surprise. The pink and purple from the disclosing tablet showing the amount of plaque that remained was not. Even after repeated uses of the U-shaped toothbrush, the same areas were consistently stained with very little change. I then brushed the teeth with a normal manual toothbrush, not trying to do an extra special clean, just what I normally do every night, as a comparison. In short: 1. You end up using a whole lot more toothpaste than you would with a manual toothbrush, so unless you can be sure your child can spit it all out, they may be ingesting quite a bit more than you realise. 2. Unless the shape of your child's arches match exactly to the shape of the toothbrush, there's a lot of areas it misses. 3. Even with repeated uses of the U-shaped toothbrush, there was very little improvement overall. It was simply quicker and far more effective to brush with the manual toothbrush. As my little fellow declared, "It's not a real toothbrush, it's just a pretend toothbrush". Let me know what you think, or what else you'd like to experiment on my kids with!
