17.01.2022 ! Perhaps 99% of the general population - and even a few astronomers, have never seen Mercury with the naked-eye! Isn't th...at remarkable?! It's because Mercury is the most elusive of the five naked-eye planets as it's normally too close to the sun. However, favorable orbital geometry is now allowing us an opportunity to view it in the next three or four weeks, and here's how you can become a member of a very exclusive group that have seen Mercury. It's already well placed in the west, and tonight half an hour after sunset, it will be low to the horizon - at an altitude of 15 degrees. It will be as bright as the brighter of the two 'Pointers', but the glare from twilight will make it a challenging observation. The crescent moon and the bright star Spica will join it in the coming nights for notable conjunctions - we'll remind you of when they're about to occur.
