25.01.2022 #OnThisDay in 1941 the British and Australian naval task force known as Force Z was attacked by 88 Japanese aircraft off the coast of Malaya. The major ships in... the force, the battleship HMS Prince of Wales and the battle cruiser HMS Repulse, were sunk. Australian destroyer HMAS Vampire survived the encounter and rescued over 200 survivors. The loss of the ships was a huge blow to the defence of Singapore. Combined with the sinking of four United States battleships at Pearl Harbour just days before, Allied naval power in the Pacific had been devastated. Winston Churchill wrote: "In all the war I never received a more direct shock. As I turned and twisted in bed the full horror of the news sank in upon me. There were no British or American capital ships in the Indian Ocean or the Pacific except the American survivors of Pearl Harbor who were hastening back to California. Over this vast expanse of waters Japan was supreme and we everywhere were weak and naked." 23.01.2022 So the update from the race. We survived the first lap so its already a win. Its currently jacked up, its came in with a squealing wheel/brake thingy. The other racers said it was just hot breaks. After taking the wheel off we noticed wear on the chassis so a hammer was used to move the wear spot than the clutch line was split by a blunt object being swung at it ( not on purpose ) and here we are 2 hrs later line fixed but cant figure out why the car still hates us.

22.01.2022 #OTD Sergeant Lewis McGee, VC On the 4th of October 1917, Sergeant Lewis McGee performed a series of heroic actions that would see him awarded Australia’s hi...ghest award for bravery, the Victoria Cross, whilst fighting during the Battle of Passchendaele. As part of the third phase of the Passchendaele offensive, the 10th Australian Brigadeof which McGee's 40th Battalion was partwas detailed to execute an attack on Broodseinde Ridge. The advance commenced at the predetermined time of 06:00 on 4 October 1917, under the cover of an artillery barrage. The first three battalions were able to seize their objectives, though the fighting intensified with each stage. As the 40th Battalion set to advance towards the final objective, its progress became hampered by increasingly heavy machine-gun and rifle fire, as well as by barbed wire entanglements and sectors of impassable swamp. With McGee's B Company heading the 40th Battalion's advance, the unit was able to progress to a point approximately 270 metres (300 yd) in front of the crest, where it was confronted by a thick line of barbed wire and another bog, while simultaneously subjected to the fire of ten machine guns in trenches and heavily defended pillboxes. The men of B Company struggled to within 90 metres (98 yd) of the battalion's objective until they were pinned by German machine guns. McGee's platoon was suffering heavy casualties from a particular machine gun 50 metres (55 yd) in front of his position, which was set in a recess atop a concrete pillbox and firing directly at his men. Armed solely with a revolver, McGee dashed alone towards the post across the fire-swept ground. Shooting the gunners, he captured the remaining soldiers in the garrison as prisoners and seized control of the pillbox. On returning to his unit, he reorganised his men and led a bombing party in the capture of a second machine-gun post. McGee's actions reignited the 40th Battalion's advance, with McGee himself "foremost in the remainder" of the action. By 09:12 on 5 October, the 40th Battalion had seized its objective and held complete control of the Broodseinde Ridge, having captured 300 Germans as prisoners in the process. As a result of his actions at Broodseinde, McGee was awarded the Victoria Cross, one of two Australians to be so decorated that day. Unfortunately, he never saw the announcement of the award. On 12 October 1917eight days after his Victoria Cross actionMcGee was killed whilst running towards a pillbox which was holding up the unit’s advance. A bullet struck him in the head, killing him instantly. Lest we forget. --------------------------------------------------------------- If you spot an error, please send me a message. 16.01.2022 #OTD Final torpedo attack by RAAF On the 4th of December 1943, six Beaufort torpedo bombers of No. 8 Squadron RAAF performed the final torpedo attack by the R...AAF in history, on this day the bombers attacked Japanese shipping in Blanche Bay, Rabaul harbour. Unfortunately, the Beaufort proved to be ineffective as a torpedo bomber, primarily because of the erratic performance of the American Mk XIII torpedo which was employed by the RAAF. As a result, the Unit’s CO and an observer were downed during the attack when their plane struck a mast and crashed due to a low attack profile. Both men survived but were taken prisoner. The attack failed to sink any Japanese ships and would bring home the shortcomings of Beauforts as torpedo bombers. This would mark the RAAF’s 19th and final operation undertaken by the RAAF torpedo strike force. --------------------------------------------------------------- If you spot an error, please send me a message. 12.01.2022 #OTD 1RAR participates in Operation FAUNA From the 10th to the 12th of December 1952, soldiers of 1RAR were involved in Operation FAUNA, what would become 1R...AR’s final action of the Korean War before their relief by 3RAR on the 29th of December. During the operation, 1RAR was responsible for capturing enemy prisoners to gain intelligence about a Chinese relief battalion which had recently arrived in the area, and to destroy enemy bunkers to prevent further Chinese advance. The Chinese occupied an advantageous position on Hill 335, and conditions were not favourable for the advance. Despite this, the Australians persevered in the attack. Unfortunately the Chinese defences proved stronger than anticipated and one third of the troops were wounded. It proved impossible to capture enemy prisoners, who hid in well fortified bunkers and underground tunnels. The Australians were eventually ordered to withdraw without having captured any prisoners. 22 men were wounded and three were reported missing during the Operation. One of whom was recovered the next day by a search party. Although the mission had been unsuccessful, many men from 1RAR were decorated for their bravery in the attack, their last action in Korea before returning home. 10.01.2022 #OTD Dedication of the Australian Vietnam Forces National Memorial On the 3rd of October 1992, the Australian Vietnam Forces National Memorial was dedicated... during a moving ceremony at Anzac Parade, Canberra. This memorial commemorates the 50,000 Australian Army, Royal Australian Navy, and Royal Australian Air Force personnel who served in Vietnam during the Vietnam War. The memorial covers 33 significant events of political or military events that occurred during the war, as well as a scroll commemorating all Australians who died serving in Vietnam. Six seats surround the memorial, each dedicated to an Australian serviceman missing in action in Vietnam. It took far too long for our veterans to get the recognition they deserved for Vietnam. This memorial is one small way of marking our appreciation for their service voluntary or not. Lest we forget. --------------------------------------------------------------- If you spot an error, please send me a message.
