25.01.2022 Some interesting projects already in progress.

22.01.2022 Some of the backyard birds you might see during your bird count.

22.01.2022 A rare sighting in South Australia....

22.01.2022 A lovely article about bird-watching. https://www.nytimes.com//m/bird-watching-coronavirus.html

21.01.2022 We are keen to know what birds you are seeing in your backyard or neighbourhood during our period of isolation. Please post photos or comments below and also let us know the location. My contribution is a Sulphur-crested Cockatoo, a Galah and a Little Corella in Middle Ridge. We hope you are all staying safe.

21.01.2022 Plover Appreciation Day, 16 September, is a special day which aims to raise awareness of the plight of ground-nesting plovers around the world. Many plover species are highly threatened, largely due to their habitats also being some of the most popular places for people’s recreation, such as the beach, shores of lakes and wetlands, or open grasslands. The plovers’ dependence on these habitats, together with their highly camouflaged nests and cryptic behaviours, means that peo...ple can have major impacts on the survival of their eggs and chicks without even knowing it. The key to coexistence between people and plovers is awareness, understanding and sharing spaces with them. (From Birdlife Australia) A Black-fronted Dotterel photographed at Lara Wetlands

19.01.2022 Whooooo is BirdLife Australia? For many of you - this is your first #AussieBirdCount - welcome to the flock! We thought we might introduce ourselves... Austr...alia is home to almost 900 bird species many of which are found nowhere else on earth. And like you, we LOVE them! As Australia's voice for birds since 1901, BirdLife Australia is dedicated to protecting our native birds and their habitats. Our aim is clear: to create a bright future for Australia's birds and stand together to prevent bird extinctions. Today, we are a diverse organisation of more than 170,000 supporters, donors and volunteer groups, with active branches and groups all across the country. Our staff and network of volunteers deliver science-based conservation programs across Australia, supporting the birds that need it the most through: On-ground conservation projects Scientific research Education and engagement Collaborative projects Land management and conservation Partnering with landowners Employing staff and experts both on the ground and in the office, and Advocating for environmental protection. We have played - and still play! a pivotal role in response to the extensive Black Summer fires - working with landholders, volunteers, multiple partners and agencies as we chart a recovery for our most vulnerable bird species. But we couldn't do this vitally important work without our supporters and donors! So thank YOU! Happy counting everyone - just one more day to go! Powerful Owls - adult and young by Andrew Silcocks - just one of our flagship bird species!

18.01.2022 An opportunity to contribute to research on birds.

17.01.2022 Most of us will probably encounter an Australian Magpie during our bird count. Let's hope there aren't too many ruffled feathers.

17.01.2022 Martu Rangers have found Night Parrots in remote salt lake country in Western Australia! Congratulations to the Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa’s Martu Rangers, The Unive...rsity of Queensland, and the Western Australian Department of Biodiversity Conservation and Attractions for their collaborative efforts that have resulted in this find. This is a wonderful example of two-way science where traditional knowledge and western science complement each other. Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa’s Martu ranger team have been using sound recorders and local knowledge to search for these elusive birds, and with assistance from experts from the University of Queensland, their two years of hard work paid off! This is the fifth confirmed location of the Night Parrot in Western Australia and adds to a growing body of knowledge about this cryptic species. The result will also inform the rangers’ ongoing management of the region. I’m very excited to hear of another place where Night Parrots are persisting, and I look forward to learning more about Night Parrots on Martu country. 15.01.2022 Here is something we can all do!

13.01.2022 Congratulations Australia! Together, we counted a record-breaking 4.8 million birds! "The increase in sightings reflects the huge surge in interest we've... seen in birds in 2020, " says Sean Dooley, our National Public Affairs Manager. "This year in particular, birds have provided a sense of hope and joy for many of us - so it is no surprise that more people than ever have been getting out and joining in the fun." We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to every one of you that helped make this event such a success in 2020 - whether you used the #AussieBirdCount hashtag, encouraged your friends, family, school or workplace to get counting - or simply took the plunge and had a go for your very first time! Thank you for all of your lovely comments and photos. A HUGE thanks also to our amazing team of 12 Chief Counters who pitched in and spread the #AussieBirdCount message far and wide across TV, radio and all the socials! The Aussie Backyard Bird Count is over, but we'll leave the app and website open until 11:59PM AEDT Wednesday 28th October for you to submit any backdated checklists. You can edit the date and time on your checklists by clicking on the date and/or time and adjusting accordingly. After this date, our Aussie Backyard Bird Count team will be collating, vetting and analysing the data. We hope to have the results ready for you in November - watch this space... Keen to keep counting for conservation? Stay tuned, for our next post will introduce our Birds in Backyards survey program. And last but not least - the lucky winners of our incredible prizes will be announced via email on 9th November. #AussieBirdCount #BirdLifeOz #UrbanBirds #BirdsinBackyards #Birdata #CitizenScience #CitSciOz #cuppawiththebirds #birdingathome

09.01.2022 We have been contacted by a friend/follower from Jandowae enquiring about the birds pictured below. Erin says they have seen quite a few of them around. Good sighting for the region! Australian Bustard.

09.01.2022 On March 6 the club announced the cancellation of all outings for the month of March 2020. Last night, the executive committee unanimously voted in favour of cancelling all outings for April as well. To reiterate, all outings are cancelled for April 2020 due to the threat of COVID-19 and the importance of reducing the immediate risk of transmission between members of the community. Outings are likely to be cancelled for May and June as well but as in this case, we will make... an official announcement closer to that time. Take care in these difficult times. Regards TBO Executive
