24.01.2022 President's Message - Vale Brian Close It is with great sadness that I advise of the passing of one of our best known jazz musicians and foundation member of the Society Brian Close. Brian passed away unexpectedly after a short illness. He will be remembered for his devotion to music particularly jazz and will be missed by many. Brian's funeral is to be held at Burstows Funeral Home on Tuesday 18 August 2020. Funeral details will appear in The Chronicle during the week.... Due to Covid 19 numbers are restricted therefore to assist the family in managing attendance we request that those wishing to be present contact Miguel Close on 0409 242 079. To his wife Magda, son Miguel and family we offer our sincere sympathies at this very difficult and sad time. Michele Alroe

23.01.2022 PRESIDENT’S CHRISTMAS MESSAGE What an amazing year. I doubt any of us will forget 2020. The Toowoomba Jazz Society, thanks to the fantastic support from our members and jazz lovers, has survived the Covid crisis and is back up and running. The feedback from members and visitors alike is that all are thoroughly enjoying the new format. Dancing was missed but the great music made for a fantastic night. The Committee decided to reopen during Carnival wanting to show support for ...Continue reading

23.01.2022 You don't have to ride 80 miles to dance!! Just drive to the North Toowoomba Bowls Club this Friday and check out the fabulous Alison Bryant Quintet and you can dance your heart out!!

23.01.2022 See the next post of Bill and Paula's wedding on the 15th April. Many of us were lucky to witness Bill proposing to Paula on New Year's Eve - how special that was!! We hope to share a celebration with them later in the year!

23.01.2022 President's Message April 2020 With all the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19 and lockdowns I thought I would bring you up-to-date with the Clubs current position. In my last message I said we hoped to be up and running again in June but as you would all realise this date is looking more and more unlikely. Until the Government gives the all clear for Clubs to re-open the North Toowoomba Bowls Club remains closed. Even when Clubs are allowed to open there may be limitations on... numbers in a room so it is all a big wait and see at the moment. Our music coordinator Bill White will be contacting, out of courtesy, any bands booked for June, July and August should the shutdown be still in place and therefore their gigs automatically cancelled. Sadly this shutdown has seen the passing, on 12 March 2020, of one of Australias top jazz musicians Don Burrows. Many members will remember Dons first visit to the Jazz Societys Club rooms in Water Street. Supper and jazz with Don. A big step up for the Society, a wonderful nights jazz and superb dinner for all. For me the afternoon at Bon Amicis will be one I will never forget when a packed house saw the late Peg Russell take over from the very talented Kevin Hunt on keyboard to join Don Burrows in a medley of jazz favourites. Another much respected local musician, the late Rod Kent, was the drummer for the gig. I remember one number in particular Blue Skies. To be given the opportunity to sing with such great musicians was certainly a moment I will always remember. Well-known local and very talented musicians Paul Hendon, Frank Earley and Jon Rotteveel also joined Don and Kevin during the afternoon. What a jam session that was. If you didnt get the chance to see the recent Australian Story episode on Don and James Morrison I recommend you can find it on Iview. An amazing partnership/friendship and heartwarming story. A jazz lovers must see. There have been very few highlights during this tedious lockdown. One exception was the news of the marriage of Bill White and Paula Mercer. Originally planning a September wedding they decided to tie the knot in their garden on 15 April. Many of you may have seen the news via Facebook or our website site but if not a photo of the happy couple is attached. I have alerted Bill and Paula that once jazz nights are back they will need to have their dancing shoes ready for the Bridal Waltz. We are still planning to hold the AGM in September all going well but will be in contact with you about that meeting closer to the date. Do hope you are all safe and well and finding productive things to do. I suspect cupboards havent been cleaner, sheds tidier and gardens so well-tended. Best wishes Michele Alroe

22.01.2022 Great publicity in the Chronicle!! (Looking good Mum!!) A slight change to the line up for Black Velvet. The very talented Sam Pace will be on keyboards instead of Graham Muller.

22.01.2022 "3 by 4" with Elizabeth Wendt February 28th was a night for young musicians to shine. We had a packed house to listen to Connor Sharpe on Saxophone, Spencer Wilson on Guitar, Bede Prince on Bass, Dom Machen on Drums and Elizabeth Wentz with Vocals. And special guest on the night was Paul Edwards. Very proud of the up and coming talent!

21.01.2022 For all those coming to New Year's Eve and future jazz events, you will need to sign in with a QR code at the Bowls Club. Please ask for help if you are not sure how to do this. One person from the group can add extra people and just need to sign in once. Please allow some extra time to do this when you arrive.

21.01.2022 Bookings now open for our next event on the 13th November, the Stephen Henry Quartet. See the event listing for details. Don't be unlucky and miss out!!

20.01.2022 We can't wait to see the fabulous band "3 by 4" featuring vocalist Elizabeth Wentz next Friday 28th February. See you at The North Toowoomba Bowls Club next Friday!

16.01.2022 PRESIDENTS MESSAGE: RE CORONAVIRUS The committee met last night to discuss the impact the coronavirus could have on our members. It was the unanimous decision of the committee that jazz nights be postponed at this stage until Friday 12 June 2020. Whilst it may be a difficult decision, health experts around the world are in agreement that the best way to slow the transmission of the virus is for people to practice social distancing. Unfortunately that is not possible on jaz...z nights. Given that many of our members fall into the high risk category, we felt it our duty of care to our members, their families and the wider community to take this action. The decision to postpone jazz nights was not taken lightly but we believe all members and musicians will agree that the health and safety of our members and those who attend the functions is our highest priority. We have had just an amazing start to this year with every gig being a great success and the committee were looking forward to continuing to bring you good jazz over the coming months. It is sincerely hoped that come June 2020, life will be back to normal and we can all meet up again at the North Toowoomba Bowls Club to enjoy a night of jazz. Should circumstances change in the coming weeks I will be back in touch with an update otherwise see you on 12 June 2020 when we will be entertained by well known local group On Ya Bike. Michele Alroe

15.01.2022 President's Message Welcome to 2020, a new decade and great jazz at the Toowoomba Jazz Society. News has come through from the North Toowoomba Bowls, that due to financial constraints meals will no longer be available on Friday nights. I know that, I for one, will miss not having to cook a meal. But I also appreciate that the Bowls Club have been trialing new ideas for some time and unfortunately they did not result in increased numbers through the door for dinner.... On the bright side, the Toowoomba Jazz Society is looking forward to a year filled with some top visiting bands and, of course, supporting our local bands. We open the year on Friday 31 January with local Darling Down's band "Black Velvet Quartet" featuring Graham Muller on keys, vocalist Deeny Kohler-Coporale, Camillo Lanzafamo on bass and with Neville Jess on drums. A great way to welcome jazz to the new decade in Toowoomba. Visiting bands on the horizon are "3 by Four" featuring Connor Sharp from the ABC program "The Recording Studio" who will be appearing on Friday 28 February, some great local musicians in "days of Wine and Rosier" on 14 February, "Girl Friday" a popular band from the Sunny Coast's hot jazz, blues and swing scene booked for Friday 13 March and on Friday 24 April we will welcome the 13 piece big band "Sweet Thunder Jazz Orchestra" from the Gold Coast focusing on exciting sounds and high energy big band music. I look forward to catching up with you on Friday 31st January and ask for your support in the year ahead. We have a wonderful line up for 2020 so spread the word to family and friends. Michele Alroe

06.01.2022 President's Message July 2020 It is hard to believe that our last Jazz Night was over four months ago on Friday 13 March. The date did not seem ominous at the time but in hindsight one wonders. The Committee met on Monday 13 July at the City Golf Club. The main item on the agenda was the possible re-opening of the Club. The North Toowoomba Bowls Club has undertaken a major upgrade of facilities at their venue and full credit must go to those in charge of the renovation....Continue reading

03.01.2022 So while we wait in anticipation for the return of jazz nights, how about looking back at some of our great artists we have had perform for us! Keep a look out for following posts! The fabulous Girl Friday from the Sunny Coast was our last pre-covid band and what a great night that was! Can't wait to see them back again!

03.01.2022 President's Message Welcome to 2021. To those who were able to attend our New Years Eve send off for 2020 thanks for a great night. The band had everyone's toes tapping and many were out on the green dancing. A huge cheer went up when the clock struck midnight and we were to farewell 2020. A happy event indeed. Sadly Covid has struck again. The girls from Two Hands Restaurant have found the uncertainty around Covid, including travel restrictions, has made running a re...staurant too difficult particularly when their place of residence was in New South Wales. I know I speak for many when I say they will be missed. Their linguine was delicious and the sticky date to die for. The Bowls Club is currently looking at "where to from here" and hope to have a solution shortly. Until advised otherwise dinner at the Bowls Club is no longer available. Jazz is back in full swing on Friday 29 January. Black Velvet is playing and given the popularity of this band at previous events I am expecting a bumper crowd. There are still some restrictions on numbers so don't forget to book. Dancing is an unknown at this stage though I am keeping my fingers and toes crossed that we can once again dance on the green as that was fun. Bookings can be made by texting me on 0408 282 007. February is going to be a top month for Jazz at the Bowls Club. February 12th sees the return of the Connor Sharpe Quartet. What a great night that was last year. On February 26th we welcome back the ever popular Stephen Henry Quartet. Pencil these dates in your diary and watch out for more details on FaceBook or on the web. Look forward to catching up with everyone on Friday 29 January. Michele Alroe
