25.01.2022 A little tip from Agnes Water this morning where Im working for a couple of days. **When you are creating images always look for the different perspectives. Take a wide shot of your landscape, but dont forget to then also take a mid shot, and follow by moving in even closer for the details. Heres a few pics I took this morning. Note how an image feels so different just by how youve framed it. I could have moved in closer also, just for the ripples in the sand or water. Go into your garden and give it a try.

25.01.2022 Welcome to my latest assignment in South Australia. I always tell my students to work around the subject to find different angles of view. Absolutely take your hero shot first, and then continue to work around the subject. I took some cool shots of this lighthouse reflected in the surrounding ocean but walking into the surrounding rocks and salt bush, I came across this astounding burst of colour. Had I just stayed on the shoreline it would have gone entirely unnoticed. #whyalla #pointlowlylighthouse
23.01.2022 Within the diving community and history of the GBR, this moment was pretty damn special. I was lucky enough to be on Yongala Dives inaugural visit to the newly opened MOUA (museum of underwater art) installation, 70km off the coast of Townsville, on John Brewer reef. This unique and inspirational setting houses over 20 statues cast from local people and a coral greenhouse, that basically will grow coral instead of pot plants. The installation was sunk on the reef before Chri...stmas 2019 and now just 9 months later, I am enthralled to see the growth taking place before our eyes, and was lucky enough to meet Kevin the Cuttlefish, who has also taken up residence in one of the hanging baskets. I vow to return annually, to enjoy this fabulous work of art and monitor its benefits for the community and reef. Read my story in an upcoming edition of Australian Geographic magazine. And a huge thank you to Air North who are flying once again from Toowoomba Wellcamp airport to Townsville!!! #moua #museumofunderwaterart #art #underwaterart #sculptures #underwatersculptures #diving #gbr #townsvilleenterprise #tourismqld #tourismandeventsqueensland #visitqueensland #divetownsville #airnorth #townsvillecasino #yongaladive #jasondecairestaylor #jasondecairestaylorart #beinspired #manbarra #townsville #mouateam #coralgreenhouse #diving #GBR #greatbarrierreeffoundation #wellcampairport #toowoombatotheworld See more
23.01.2022 Please dont tell me that I’ve oversaturated the sky, I haven’t touched it This mornings sunrise was stormy - I have never seen the Pilbara so green - and with all the rain comes the wildflowers oh... and the puddles
23.01.2022 The new edition of Australian Geographic magazine is out, so pick up a copy to support our magazine industry. Inside is my 7-page spread on the fabulous, newly opened, Museum of Underwater Art (MOUA), on John Brewer Reef, 70km off the coast from Townsville. Check out the gorgeous cuttlefish posing for my photo amid the sculptures by Jason DeCaires Taylor. 22.01.2022 How do you choose a favourite picture of our Aussie icon? Its impossible. But seeing it from a chopper is always a bonus. No passengers from the first Brisbane to Ayers Rock flight have been able to get near the rock because of a National Park closure due to COVID concerns, so Voyages, Ayers Rock Resort, offered free helicopter flights to those guests staying with them. How good is that? Thanks Voyager and Sails in the Desert Resort! #ayersrock #ulurukatatjutanationalpark #uluru #ayersrockresort #sailsinthedesert #ayersrockhelicopters #ayersrockfromtheair #northernterritoryaustralia #nt #northernterritorytourism #centralaustralia #roadtrips #therock #aussieaussieaussie #tourismaustralia #aussieicon #desert #desertphotography #aerialview #chopperview #chopperlove
22.01.2022 Ayers Rock spam #sorrynotsorry This Field of Light installation is quite remarkable and a lovely added attraction to sunrise or sunset at the rock. 18.01.2022 What an adorable day out with Adventure Bay Charters. We took the boat from Port Lincoln to the Sir Joseph Banks group of islands which is the breeding ground for a large variety of sea birds, seals, dolphins and fish. We were not allowed to go ashore - it would be like strangers just letting themselves into your bedroom right? We plunged into the ocean offshore of the island, so that the choice was entirely the sea lions. If they wanted to come and play, that was entirely th...eir decision to slide into the water from the island. Lucky for me, they wanted to play all day Cutest things ever #mega cute #cute #adorable #sealions #seals #sirjosephbanks #southaustralia #southaustralianphotography #southaustraliatourism #portlincoln #adventurebaycharters #adventurebay #swimmingwithsealions #playfulpuppy #tumbybay #australiangeographic #naturephotography #naturephotography #oceanlover #tourismaustralia #seeaustralia_sa #seesouthaustralia #oceanconservation #protectourseas #protectwhatyoulove See more
17.01.2022 Having a strong creative vision is critical in making great photographs. Practice seeing visual elements in a scene, not for what they really are but abstract, artistic elements. When you start seeing objects as abstract shapes, colours and forms, you can start transforming even the most mundane scenes into great photography. Pictured are leaves and bark from a Scribbly Gum forest that we will visit on an upcoming photography tour to Fraser Island in September. Jump onto my website for more details.

16.01.2022 What a wonderful country we live in here in Australia- one hour from the capital city of Brisbane and we can laze on our balcony overlooking some of the best sand beaches in the world, watch the dolphins playing beside the resort jetty and wander along a pristine shoreline. It’s such a pretty spot - I’m going to run a photography trip here in February, so keep an eye out for the launch on my website cathyfinchphotography.com #tangalooma #moretonisland #moretonbay #moreton #photographyworkshopsandretreats #photographyworkshop #photographyworkshops #learnphotography #learnphotographyskills #islandlife #tangotours #tangaloomaislandresort #snorkelaroundtheworld #tangaloomawrecks #tangaloomaisland

14.01.2022 For this mornings lesson, lets talk about Motion Blur. This is when you purposely create an aspect of movement for your subject but the rest of the photo is in focus. You can get the idea from the pic below - it still has a bit of movement in the surfer so for me hasnt nailed it entirely but its come close. Theres nice blur behind him. We achieve this with a slow shutter speed and in this case, to nail it, you would need to pan your camera with the subject. Tricky he...y. But a lot of fun to play with. There are of course many variables. Like - the speed of your subject, how much blur you are actually trying to create and how well lit your subject is (in shutter priority with a slow shutter speed, remember a lot of light is coming into your camera). Google is king. There are so many great articles out there. So read up and give it a crack! See more

12.01.2022 Do you wanna talk gear? This is one of my first and last pics with my new Cygnett Bluetooth Selfie-stick before I dropped the Bluetooth remote through the netting of the sailing boat (yup, at least it wasnt my phone to a dolphin this time). Credit where credit is due however- CYGNETT have sourced me a new one to let me get back to do what I do. I admit I have been one of the last to turn to the selfie-stick, rather despising the obsession with self thing. But you know what?... They are invaluable for my work now. Blogging, video and cool insta stories are just a way of life and as in this pic, when Im up and awake for the stunning sunrises, everyone else is in bed. In my job, normally the presence of a person in a landscape is necessary, so the selfie-stick can be a lifesaver. I went for the Cygnett brand as I wanted something sturdy. It has a tripod-like stand that I can also put my phone on self timer and take an image or position for a video when I dont want my arm in shot or an awkward angle. #cygnett #selfiestick #gostick #bluetoothselfiestick See more

11.01.2022 Sometimes you have to take a small win. Sometimes it reaps big rewards. After publication of my story on Whyalla’s cuttlefish migration in the recent edition of Australian Geographic magazine, Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development, David Basham, has announced that the new fishing exclusion zone on the world’s only known migration of giant cuttlefish has been extended 100 metres - after all, it’s a bad look when tourists travel to see this mighty migration, ...and on one side of the beach they swim enthralled with the species, only to witness the other end of the beach, fishermen hauling in their catch of the species, smearing the rocks with black ink. Hopefully this can stop being a political battle between fishermen votes and the need to preserve a world phenomenon, with the hope of a full re-enstatement of what has been a fishing exclusion zone for many years. Let’s hope it’s done before we once again, put another species in danger. #travelandtourism #natureconservation #tourism #wildlife #wildlifephotography #australiangeographic #whyalla #cuttlefish #cuttlefishmigration #southaustralia Note: My cuttlefish story printed in Australian Geographic needed to be non-bias and was based around the wonderful 'Cuttlefest' that happens each year, not this underlying problem of the need of the protection of the species.
09.01.2022 DATE CLAIMER for 2021 Cathy Finch Photography Tour - 14-26 June 2021. Just giving all my followers here the heads up on my Exmouth, Coral Bay and Karijini National Park tour next year. Its a HUGE one. Small and intimate, this is a private 4WD tour for maximum 8 pax plus your two drivers. This tour begins in the heart of the Pilbara at the base of Mt Nameless in the township of Tom Price for one night (transfer flights from Brisbane - Perth - Paraburdoo recommended, not inc...luded). From here, we go on an off-road adventure into one of the worlds most magnificent National Parks, Karijini, for 3 nights accommodated in the multi-award winning Karijini Eco Retreat (triple and twin share). This is an ancient wonderland of red rock cliffs, waterfalls, gorges and emerald green waterholes, where your Deluxe Eco Tents with en-suites, place you glamping in a landscape formed some 2 billion years ago. Next we return to the small coastal resort town of Exmouth on Western Australias North West Cape, where you can opt to purchase optional extras, such as a day out to swim and snorkel with whale sharks, perhaps spot an early humpback, snorkel or dive with manta rays, turtles and experience the magnificent Ningaloo Reef. We will also take a tour into Cape Range National Park to meet lots of the local wildlife and more of this areas rugged landscapes, sheer cliffs and red gorges. Accommodated in a 6 bedroom, 4 bathroom, luxury canal home with pool, there will be plenty of adventures, photography and learning. To end our incredible wild west adventure, we stay 3 nights in another fully self contained house overlooking Bills Bay in the seaside township of Coral Bay. This small settlement is an absolute paradise, with the Ningaloo Reef virtually 10 metres from shore. So instead of steaming 1.5 hours by boat to get to the Great Barrier Reef, in QLD, over here you just pull on your mask and swim from your door onto an absolute marine wonderland. Spectacular. Having lived in Karratha for 2 years, I have a special love for the Pilbara and have returned many times, also as the guest photographer running workshops at the annual Karijini Experience festival. So - let me show you the top spots. Its a place that every, single, Australian should one day visit. Price $ 2950, 12 nights accommodation, Private 4WD transport Photography guidance and learning. Self-drivers welcome (however, there is no price deduction as we will still be taking 2 private 4WDs). Full details will go out on my website soon!
08.01.2022 This is what I get up to when Im away...a tough days work with my drone. Dont you just love the crew of luxury sailing vessel Adelaar? 07.01.2022 Hows this for an embarrassing story with a lovely ending? So when I was having a big rant about everyone being allowed to vote at the beginning of the pandemic, my calming Peppermint Grove candle blew up. Im talking the entire top of the thick glass of the candle sheered off and blew off from too much heat. I was appalled to see what I thought was 16 wicks coming out of the candle, which had caused quite a large blaze. I emailed the company thinking these people were bein...g sabotaged - I mean, who manufactures a candle with SIXTEEN wicks??! As 10 of their staff sat confused around their computer and the email from me with pictures, they asked if perhaps I had a young child in the house who may have stuck something in the candle? NO was my reply! Quite taken aback! But alas. I then went pulling at the wicks that came out to see they were small sticks of a wood like substance, and asked my daughter what she thought of them. To be honest mum she says, they look like the end of incense sticks. Oh. My. Goodness. Penny drops hard. Months before (because I hadnt wanted to burn my gorgeous candle), I remembered using it to push the incense sticks I was burning into it. They burnt down to the wax, out of sight, never to be seen or thought of again. I obviously did it 16 times - wiped the top of the candle clean, plonked it on my office desk and never thought about it again. Come to burn the candle and unbeknown to me, not just the 2 normal wicks set alight but also the extra bottoms of 16 incense sticks! I could have had a major fire on my hands The staff and owner of this gorgeous Australian Company, Peppermint Grove, treated me so respectfully throughout this blast which turned out to be entirely my fault. They even INSISTED on posting me a new soy candle, Sandalwood and Vetiver which is absolutely divine, at their own expense - even though it was entirely my fault?! Get that! What an absolutely outstanding business. Check them out www.peppermintgroveaustralia.com I cant recommend them highly enough. So which one of my beautiful friends gifted me this candle????
