14.01.2022 The emergence of Cognitive Science over the past 50 years has brought game-changing insight to the field of Education. The gap between the two disciplines is gradually being bridged, but there is still a way to go.

14.01.2022 It's OK to keep practising those foundational sound/symbol skills! OVERLEARNING to automaticity is the only path to sustainable progress for dyslexic readers.

12.01.2022 A great visual from Pam Kastner

12.01.2022 I regularly see this in well-meaning classrooms, but its unnecessary and really painful for many kids.

12.01.2022 A very good piece by the SMH. If University Education Faculties open their arms to the offerings of the Psychology and Linguistics Faculties, teacher trainees are gifted access to essential truths and knowledge about our language system and associated cognition, which they require and deserve. A recent study revealed that this access is still currently withheld in up to 90% of initial teacher training courses in Australia. The widespread access to this essential knowledge among frontline education workers would neutralise the relevance of any debate about the in-ness or out-ness of any program or approach. The human cost of ongoing and futile argument, which only serves to delay progress in widespread practice, is unfathomable.

05.01.2022 Guessing as a word attack strategy turns out to be what the world’s poorest adult readers do. Multiple studies have shown this. So why to do so many schools sti...ll insist on encouraging three cueing based strategies (chunky monkeys and floppy dolphins) and discourage decoding (sounding out)? This flat-earth view of teaching reading is not only ineffective, it’s damaging to about 30% of learners. Teachers. Stand up for your learners. Argue the point if you have to. 04.01.2022 Feeling estranged from your own child is painful. Research indicates the most important predictor of a childs emotional and psychological stability is the clo...seness of the parent/child relationship. If your child is not opening up when they are upset, the relationship may not be as close as it needs to be. There are two habits that parents routinely engage in that shut down communication and drive a child away: negating feelings and mistaking sympathy for empathy. In many cases, honoring your childs feelings is all they need to feel better. Simply knowing their parent understands allows them to feel secure and forge ahead. Some sympathetic statements, on the other hand, disrupt any chance of emotional attunement, instead of helping them work through their difficult feelings. Dr. Erin Leonard discusses how to be a parent your child wants to confide in on the Gottman Relationship Blog: https://bit.ly/2DHZe8u
