24.01.2022 Usually we enjoy the art displayed inside the Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery. But with our beautiful Spring weather of late, we took advantage of @elysharei art on the outside. . #toowoombastreetart #toowoombatrails #toowoombaliving #toowoombalife #artistsoninstagram #toowoombaregion #toowoombatourism #darlingdowns #gallery #spring #outdoors #sunshine #painting #love #photography #nature #artgallery #springtime #green #paint

23.01.2022 Talk about a coincidence, here’s another one of Toowoomba’s Art Deco buildings that, like the Empire Theatre, only enriches our CBD streetscape as a result of a fire. Pigotts was one of Toowoomba’s biggest retailers and a household name in a bygone era. Nowadays, it’s probably one of those buildings you’ve walked past 100 times, but never looked hard enough to see. You’ll hear more about this hidden gem and discover many more just like it on our Architecture Tour! . #toowoombatrails #toowoombaregion #darlingdowns #toowoomba #toowoombabusiness #toowoombalocal #toowoombalife #artdeco #pigottsstore #architecturequeensland #architecture #architecturephotography #artdecostyle #artdecoarchitecture #discovery #store

20.01.2022 What prompted the Toowoomba Chronicle to rail against the river of putrescence flowing down Ruthven Street? What prompted Gowrie Creek to be known as the most polluted waterway in Australia? Toowoomba was a hotbed for Typhoid, with outbreak after outbreak occurring over many years. Why was Toowoomba susceptible to such outbreaks? 19.01.2022 Can you guess where these photos were taken? The refurbished Railway Goods Shed, built in 1896 may look a little different today, but it’s walls tell the same stories. 110, 850 goods were loaded and unloaded in this shed in 1910. Now it serves as a community space, but these photos are a reminder of what once was. . #toowoombatrails #toowoombaregion #darlingdowns #goods #toowoombaliving #toowoombalife #brisbane #goldcoast #love #toowoombalocal #visittoowoomba #ourtoowoomba #queensland #shed #building #photography #toowoombaphotography

19.01.2022 Side Street Spotlight Every time we drive around Toowoomba’s CBD, we’re passing by laneways lined with colourful street art, often without even realising. So, we’re introducing Side Street Spotlight! Every few weeks, we’ll be featuring the spectacular street art of a different laneway, starting this week with the intersecting Becker & Olcott Lanes. This artwork as part of the 2016 First Coast Festival by Melissa Grisancich. Stay tuned this week to continue to discover what else is hidden in these laneways! . #toowoombatrails #toowoombaregion #darlingdowns #toowoombastreetart #urbanphotography #streetart #urbanart #streetphotography #mural #streetarteverywhere #photography #artist #artwork #streetstyle #muralart #love #wallart #streetartist #instaart #wall #city

17.01.2022 A walk down one of Toowoomba’s many streets or laneways is a walk back in time. Each one is a puzzle piece in the jigsaw of Toowoomba’s history, like Lamb Lane, where deliveries from TK Lamb’s renowned Bell Street Cake Factory and Bakery were managed. Lamb’s also ran the Alexandra and other refreshment forms in Ruthven Street, and their baked goods were shipped far and wide in Queensland on the railway. Today, a rainbow serpent covers the wall of the old delivery site. Check our page tomorrow to find out the significance of this mural, and join us on the Laneways and Street Art Discovery Tour to hear more stories like these. https://www.tcof.com.au/hidden-laneways-discovery-walking-/

14.01.2022 Painted by New Zealand based multidisciplinary artist, Cinzah Seekayem, whose international portfolio of work explores themes of duality, mythology and storytelling, the Lamb Lane Rainbow Serpent mural depicts a globally worshipped deity with great significance to the Toowoomba community. The Rainbow Serpent is commonly spoken about by the Indigenous Australian people, whom consider it a sign of protection, positive omen and one of the most powerful creators and protectors/gi...vers of the precious resource, water. When a rainbow appeared, it was believed the snake had burst through a water hole and travelled across the sky, giving rain and life before submerging into another water hole. These holes marked two points on the landscape that didn't dry up during droughts. The Rainbow Serpent is not only significant in Aboriginal mythology, but also in Toowoomba’s history. The fire snake is the animal the Aboriginal people of Toowoomba identified with before being forcibly relocated between 1897 and 1957. Additionally, in 1965, Toowoomba was the only city that voted against Aboriginal Australians having the right to enrol to vote in the Australian federal elections. The snake has been painted in a way so that it can be perceived as a cheeky, mysterious, or friendly creature, and hopefully inspires its viewers to think a little deeper about the history of our surroundings. Continue to discover a side to Toowoomba’s laneway art not commonly observed by the naked eye by clicking the link below. https://www.tcof.com.au/hidden-laneways-discovery-walking-/

14.01.2022 From the ashes of a devasting 1933 fire rose one of Queensland’s finest Art Deco theatres, our very own Empire. 13.01.2022 One of the stars of the June 9 Private Tour of the Royal Bull's Head Inn is the wallpaper! How refreshing these fine finishes and bold colours would have been to weary travelers breaking their journey along the dusty roads of the Darling Downs in the 19th century! Some rooms have been left as they were when the National Trust of Australia Queensland purchased the near derelict house in 1974, retaining the multiple layers of wallpaper accumulated over years of occupation. Others have been restored using block printed wallpapers still produced in Britain today using traditional manufacturing methods. We hope you will join us to explore these unique features and many more on this fascinating tour.

13.01.2022 What do an ex-convict, a renowned Reverend and an affluent family have in common? It’s the Royal Bulls Head Inn! Carnival week is here, and our tours kick off tomorrow at The National Trust of Queensland’s Royal Bulls Head Inn. A must-visit in Toowoomba, the Inn is one of the oldest remnants of early settlement on the Darling Downs; a time when bathrooms were considered a luxury and horses the main form of transport. Whether you’re looking for some amazing photo opportunities, a history enthusiast, or simply curious to see what life once was like, this tour is the one for you, just watch out for the ghosts!

10.01.2022 This building and tales of its past feature in the Architecture Style & Stories walking tour. Lovely to see these behind the scenes interior pictures.

09.01.2022 Side Street Spotlight This week our featured laneways are the intersecting Becker & Olcott Lanes, where you can spot ‘Floating Polar Bear’ by artist 'Fuzeillear'. One of my personal favourites, it’s just as awe-inspiring as it was when painted for the First Coast Festival of 2016. Even more street art coming soon! . #toowoombatrails #toowoombastreetart #artist #streetart #toowoombaregion #toowoombatourism #photography #wallart #polarbear #art #urbanart #street #streetphotography #streetstyle #painting #artwork #streetarteverywhere

07.01.2022 Another one for this weeks ‘Side Street Spotlight’! You can spot this work of artist Alysa Mae’s in Olcott Lane, painted for the 2016 First Coat Festival. 04.01.2022 When my children were young they refused to go upstairs on their own because of the footsteps they could hear climbing them. We can't promise you will experience this yourself on the Royal Bull's Head Inn Private Tour and Tea, on Wednesday June 9, but we can promise a glimpse into life and death in the early days of Innkeeping on the Darling Downs. Booking link in the comments.

01.01.2022 Did you know you could travel from Ipswich to Toowoomba by train before you could travel from Ipswich to Brisbane? The new colony prioritised the railway West from the most advanced city in the colony, Ipswich. The coming of the railway to Toowoomba meant that wool could be transported quickly by rail to Ipswich. There, it would be transferred to riverboats, before being carried to Moreton Bay and onto the boats heading for England. The rail line ultimately saved the fledglin...g colony financial from bankruptcy. The rail gauge conundrum. Would Queensland adopt the NSW gauge of 4 ft 8 12 in (1,435 mm) or the Victorian gauge of 5 ft 3 in (1,600 mm)? In the end, we decided to do things our own way, and Queensland settled for 3 ft 6 in (1,067 mm). Learn why they went for the narrow gauge on our tour of Toowoomba’s historic railway precinct. https://www.tcof.com.au/150-years-of-rail-walking-tour/
