21.01.2022 A gentle reminder that New Years Eve is the most terrifying event for our furkids which can indirectly pose risks to animal safety by causing them to take fligh...t and try to escape the loud noises. Dogs and horses in particular may be afraid of fireworks and many try to run away, sometimes injuring themselves in the process. We receive calls from distressed owners whose dogs have run away. Many of these dogs can end up several kilometres from home. Dogs have been known to jump through plate glass windows to escape loud noises, and easily jump over, or dig their way under fences that would normally contain them. So what can you do for your doggy furkid? RSPCA advises: Prepare early. Talk to your vet about the treatment options available for managing noise phobias - ask them about any new treatment options. Take your dog out for exercise before the fireworks start which is generally 9pm eg. reasonably long walk, then after a couple of hours you can feed a meal. A tired and well-fed dog will likely be less anxious during the night. If you can, stay home to be with your pet. Let your dog be with you and try to be calm and normal. Avoid fussing over your pet excessively but try to engage them in normal activities such as playing. Reward your dog for their calm behaviour, rewards include giving dog treats and their favourite dog toy. Close the blinds/curtains, create a comfortable hiding place and allow your dog to go there to feel safe, put on some music or the TV to help mask the noise outside, and distract your dog with games and food. Dogs who panic can choke themselves on a collar or lead, so never tether your dog during these times and never use a choke chain to restrain your dog. Make sure your dog is microchipped and that your contact details are up to date on the microchip register. Also ensure they are wearing an ID tag so they can be easily returned if they accidentally escape. Direct supervision is important to help prevent injury or escape. If you cannot supervise your dog on the night consider making alternative arrangements so your dog will be supervised by a responsible person directly or consider boarding your dog so they will be safe. What about cats, rabbits and other pets? Cats should be kept indoors during fireworks displays. Most cats will find somewhere safe to hide and will usually venture out when the noise stops. Make sure you cat is microchipped and your details are up to date on the microchip register in case they wander and become lost. Rabbits and other small animals like guinea pigs should be safely housed during the fireworks display. Horses are particularly vulnerable to bolting when exposed to fireworks. If possible they should be securely stabled, or removed to a different location away from the fireworks display, and the risk of physical harm minimised. Remove any sharp objects that might injure a panicking animal, cover stable windows to hide the sight of the fireworks and dim the noise, and make sure you supply food and water. What will we do to assist? Central Coast Animal Care Facility at Gosford Pound will open from 8.00pm to Midnight. Our number is 4304 4350. If your animal comes in and can be returned home before we close at Midnight, no impound fees will apply. Please understand legislation requires no animal is allowed to leave unregistered, therefore if your animal is unregistered, you will still be required by law to register your animal before it leaves however the impound fees will be zero if picked up before Midnight. Any animal that is still at the facility at closing WILL have impound fees to pay as well as any unpaid registration or microchip fees. We are here to help as much as possible but if everyone can do their part by ensuring your furkids are safe, we can all breathe a little easier and enjoy the festivities of the final 2018 year. We wish you all a great night and hope everyone stays safe and sound. Dee, Kim, Amy, Tahnee, Jen, Katelyn, Mikayla and Sean

20.01.2022 Hello again fellow dog lovers . It is getting warmer and the Tick season is well underway with many presentations at vets already . It is my advice to you that you get quality Tick treatment for your dogs sooner rather than later . The old saying is "prevention is better than cure " . If your dog gets a paralysis tick you are up for atleast $1000 . Speaking of vet costs , you may be aware that my Rotti has had a litter of 10 , and I just took them to my vet for their 6 week v...accinations , microchipping and health check . The total cost was $650 and the staff were fantastic . I did get quotes from another vet and their quote was $1050 . Like anything else related to dogs I suggest you do your research . Our boarding kennels are going really well and we are filling up fast for the holiday periods so get in early . The puppies are all doing very well and Rousey is an outstanding mother . It is not often that a bitch has 10 pups in her first litter and doesn't lose one . I am sure those people taking one of her pups will get alot of pleasure out of them . See more

19.01.2022 Hello again . Last time I wrote to you all about the new dog laws . They have now come into force as at December the 1st 2013 . Here is a brief rundown on the laws as I understand them to be . Under the laws , any dog that has tried to attack a person or animal , or has displayed " aggressive tendancies " will be considered menacing under the amendments to the Companion Animals Act . Owners will then be required to desex their dog and keep them muzzled , leashed and in the co...ntrol of an adult when in public . Failure to comply could result in 7 years jail and a $77,000 fine if the dog attacks someone . The fine for failing to register a dog has gone from $165 to $275 . Should your dog be classified as a menacing dog the owner may apply to have the dog taken off the register after 12 months providing it has undergone rehabilitation and behavioural asseement . In summary none of the above will effect you unless your dog has been listed as a menacing dog by council . If you have any concerns , please feel free to contact me or your local council . Kind regards Keith See more

16.01.2022 Now that you have decided on a dog the first 3 things I advise you to do are socialise , socialise , socialise . 1. Socialise with dogs . 2. Socialise with people . 3. Socialise with places . Lately I have had an influx of dogs that have no socialisation skills . Normally it is an event such as dog or people aggression that cause people to call .... Once your dog is fully vaccinated I advise you to take it to as many places with other dogs and people as you can without putting the dog at risk of course . Other dogs are generally more accepting of puppys and your dog will learn social skills therefore avoiding future problems hopefully . Until next time , regards Keith See more

08.01.2022 Hello good people . I call you that because I know that responsible owners have the best interest of their dogs at heart . For those of you who do not know , there are some serious changes to the companion animals act being introduced . It is up to the individual owner to contact either the companion aimals website or local council to see how this impacts on you and your dog . I personally do not agree with some of the changes but my comments have fallen on deaf ears . There... has been a massive knee jerk reaction in my opinion . I would be interested to see how the chages effect the wider community of dog owners . Please feel free to contact me and advise your friends to do the same if you feel these changes effect you unjustly . Kind regards Keith

05.01.2022 Hello fellow and would be dog owners . For those of you who have dogs and are experiencing problems , don't ignore them and hope they will come right by themselves . I assure you they won't . You will be surprised how easy it is to fix most of these problems and make owning a dog much more enjoyable . For those of you looking to puchase a dog , here are some simple tips . - Research the type of dog you want . There is plenty of information about breeds on the internet that w...ill allow you to see what type of behaviour to expect from the breed . - Purchase from a registered breeder so that you get what you pay for . Also compare breeders prices , remembering once again that you get what you pay for . - Keep in mind that most dogs live a long life so you need to think about what your future holds an therefore theirs as well . - If you need advice or assistance give me a call on 0448087592 . 01.01.2022 First of all , aplogies for the long delay since my last entry . I am still finding that the main problem with dog owners is their reluctance to let their dogs associate with other dogs in an off lead environment . You will have less problems with off lead dogs than you do if you try to introduce them on lead . A tethered dog is more dangerous than a dog off lead . A couple of reasons for this are the fact that tethered dogs tend to go into a guarding or territorial mode . Th...e other being that if a dog is off lead and is not comfortable with a situation then it can move away without the restriction of a lead . Owners anxiety only causes more problems . I find that generally when the owner is with someone confident in a controlled environment things go so much smoother . At the end of the day , ignoring the problem will not make it go away . If you or someone you know is having problems in this area , you would be amazed how easy it is to address . Kind regards Keith

01.01.2022 Hi . It is coming up to xmas again and this is a time of year that many people choose to purchase a dog for the family . There are alot of factors to consider when making this commitment to own a dog . Listed below are some of the more important ones . - How long is your do going to be around . Remember they are a pet for life and some may live up to 16 years . - What breed is going to suit your lifestyle ?... - Do you have a suitable property for a dog ? If you are in rented accommodation remember not all landlords allow pets . - Where are you going to source the dog from ? In purchasing a dog there are a number of avenues that you can go down . There are pet shops , breeders and RSPCA and pounds . My recommended method would be the breeder . That way you can generally see the sire and the bitch and the environment it has come from . As a puppy you do not have to worry about the dogs history like you do when adopting an older dog . There are numerous ways to research the type of dog you are intersted in and I encourage you to use them . Good luck to all you prospective owners . See more
