22.01.2022 Huge effort from the Blue Hearts team on the weekend. A great initiative from Masterbait with a good mix of kids, families and new people coming together to clean our Top End beaches. Special effort from the Ozfish Darwin chapter team concentrating on collecting fishing line and tackle off the Mindil rocks. It was awesome to see Palmerston Game Fishing Club Inc. also lending a hand in the clean up. Looking forward to joining you all on the next MasterBait - Blue Hearts day.

19.01.2022 Did you see the latest news on seabed mining? The Northern Territory Environment Protection Authority is seeking community and stakeholder comment on seabed mining in the NT. The Government’s current temporary ban is due to expire in March 2021. Seabed mining corporations are lining up to mine some of our most precious places like Fog Bay, Anson Bay and the Wessel Islands. Seabed mining has already been approved or applications to mine exist in many locations across the Terr...itory coast (see red areas on map). If the temporary ban expires, mining companies could exploit 9600km2 of our incredible Territory coasts - an area eight times the size of Darwin Harbour. This will have an unacceptable impact on the Top End’s unique coastal waters, tourism and fishing lifestyle. It’s time the Government acts to safeguard our fishing, lifestyle and regional economies and bans seabed mining for good. Give this post a if you agree. Stay tuned for more information on how you can help.

18.01.2022 Our Harbour supports some incredible marine life including nationally threatened species of coastal dolphins. Australian snubfin, Indo-Pacific bottlenose and Australian humpback dolphins feed and breed in Darwin Harbour. But their numbers are in decline due to noise, habitat loss, boat strike, fewer prey animals, and increased water temperatures due to climate change. The rich array of species is a BIG reason why the Harbour is so special. We must keep our Harbour healthy to ensure the marine life who call it home are protected. Comment to let us know what animals you’ve seen in Darwin Harbour.

18.01.2022 Top End coasts never fail to surprise us with their beauty, awe and wonder! The Territory coast is a special place worth protecting. We know that. Now our new friends from the Southern Ocean know it too.

18.01.2022 Right now the Territory Budget is being decided. Fully funding the Plan to protect our coasts is a modest but crucial investment - it’s less than 0.001% of the Territory’s overall Budget. But it’s the only way to safeguard our fishing, culture and lifestyle and help recover our economy. Add your name and call on the Government to act now and fund the Plan to protect our coasts in the upcoming NT budget >>https://www.topendcoasts.org.au/invest_in_our_coasts

15.01.2022 Did you catch the letter by in Kamaljit Sangha in yesterday’s The NT News? Kamaljit is an ecological economist at Charles Darwin University, and explains that our coasts make a significant contribution to jobs and the economy. Right now, we have an opportunity to protect our coastal asset by funding the Plan to protect our coasts in the November Budget. Immediate action is needed to deliver on the Gunner government’s commitment to implement the Territory’s first ever plan to protect our coasts - the NT Coastal MarineManagement Strategy.

14.01.2022 As Territorians, we love our Harbour. It provides a beautiful backdrop to our daily lives and gives us a source of recreation and leisure, healthy food in the fish and crabs caught by many fishers and their families, and it's a centrepiece for many marine-based industries. The health of our Harbour is in decline and action is needed now to keep it healthy for future generations to enjoy. Let’s send a message to Territory leaders that we heart our Harbour and want it protected.... Share this post in support. 12.01.2022 "We see it as too risky for fish stocks and very important fish habitats." says David Ciaravolo, Chief Executive Officer of Amateur Fishermen's Association NT (AFANT) - and we certainly agree!

10.01.2022 We're looking forward to improved conservation of the NT's coastal dolphin and sea turtle species with a new marine megafauna research project announced this week. The ARC funded project will map population connectivity and critical habitat for coastal marine megafauna and enhance capacity for monitoring and conservation planning. Congratulations RIEL - Research Institute for the Environment and Livelihoods - Rik Buckworth of CSIRO and Carol Palmer of NT Department of Enviro...nment, Parks and Water Security #CDUResearch

07.01.2022 This weeks Territory NRM conference is a great way to catchup with so many forward thinking organisations with a focus on the sustainability and management of our natural resources in the Northern Territory. We congratulate the new Vice-chair TNRM Jane Munday and Chair TNRM Alastair Shields. This is their first conference and it’s certainly delivering an amazing cross section of presenters from Indigenous Ranger groups and school kids to ecologists and commercial operators.... Looking forward to the #TNRM2020 awards gala dinner tonight recognising and celebrating the work Territorians undertake to manage our water, land and biodiversity.

04.01.2022 BREAKING: The NT Government has announced it will ban seabed mining in Territory waters. This is a huge win for Territory coasts! To everyone who sent a submission, spoke to a politician, spread the word on social media, or helped in any other way - thank you! We love our coasts and Top End lifestyle, and we will all benefit from this decision. ... We congratulate the NT Government for listening to widespread community concern and taking strong action to safeguard our marine life, fishing and culture. Thank you Eva Lawler MLA: Member for Drysdale and Michael Gunner.

04.01.2022 #TNRM2020 Territory NRM conference and gala award night delivered yet more fantastic opportunities to learn, share, and celebrate wins for the environment. During the day, we heard from the Dhimurru Aboriginal Corp Dhimurru Miyalk (women) Rangers who look after sea country in the Gulf of Carpentaria. They spoke of the need for Yolngu rangers to become facilitators to manage sacred sites and to become role models for future generations. The delightful school kids from Manyal...laluk School shared their STEM project by showing us how much fun they have monitoring wild and feral animals in the area. After winning an award on the night, we are sure they will become Youtube sensations - check them 'interrogating the data' here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEI3gaQEyejSjvqppGyMfqg We heard from Leila of Maningrida Wildfoods Maningrida Wild Foods on how important it is for the ladies to get back on country and provide quality products from the land and sea. Auntie B, a Larrakia elder, again delivered an exceptional Welcome to Country to open the Gala Award night which set up the evening perfectly for so many ranger groups and organisations to be nominated and accept well-deserved awards. Although the Li-Anthawirriyarra turtle monitoring team from Borroloola did not win an award on the night, it's a huge achievement to be nominated and up against other great programs keeping track of the marine life on our Top End coasts. We congratulate the team at the Enviro Collective CDU who won the Environment and Conservation award and the team at GULP NT for taking out the Resilient and Sustainable Enterprise award. Overall it was a fantastic week of networking and sharing and we thank the TNRM and board for putting on another great conference.

03.01.2022 At least 7 turtles have been found trapped in gillnets in Mackay QLD, as fisherman leave their nets for a concerned local to find. Gillnet fishing takes place across the Top End and events like this are not uncommon here too. Gillnets trap and kill marine animals like turtles, dugongs, dolphins and barramundi. Just like in the Top End, the Mackay region is an important conservation area for flatback and green turtles.
