23.01.2022 Book Week 2020. Pip’s choice is Where is the Green Sheep? by Mem Fox and Judy Horacek Pip loves to integrate this book into her sessions with her early intervention clients. The book is all about looking for a green sheep and finding out what he is doing. As you go through each page, you will find lots of different sheep of all different colours and interests. It is a colourful book with simple text which keeps children engaged. It uses a range of sentence types and concept...s, incorporating rhyme and repetition. There is also an added element of suspense as the child guesses the whereabouts of the mysterious green sheep. This book can help language and literacy goals such as: Learning interesting descriptive and action words. opposite concepts eg brave and scared, high and low the complex sentence structure ‘Here is the ....sheep and here is the ..... sheep BUT where is the green sheep?’ As you can see, our copy is well loved! #whereisthegreensheep #memfox #bookweek2020 #speechlanguagepathology #speechtherapy #slp #topendkids #languagedevelopment #rhyme #earlyliteracy

22.01.2022 BOOK WEEK Zoe’s choice is We’re going on a bear hunt by Michael Rosen and Helen Oxenbury. This book gives Zoe flashbacks to when she was little. She loved to read this book with her parents and younger siblings.... Four children, plus a baby sister and their dog, go out to hunt for a bear. They travel through long wavy grass, a deep cold river, thick oozy mud, a big dark forest, a swirling whirling snowstorm, before coming face to face with a bear in its narrow, gloomy cave. Zoe loves this book because the illustrations fill the entire book with the imaginative story. It beautifully illustrates the appeal of adventure. Helen Oxenbury used black and white drawings when the children were contemplating an action, and colour when they were actually doing it. The repetitive, rhythmic language helps children join in and learn the words. This book can help language and literacy goals such as: Description of the environment and feelings Learning interesting action words (verbs): wade, trip, stumble, chase, tiptoe, shiver Understanding place words (prepositions): under, over, through Practise of /s/ clusters eg. swirly, swamp, storm, snow, scared, swishy, swishy, stumble, splash etc. Narrative structure #bookweek2020 #weregoingonabearhunt #speechpathologyaustralia #michaelrosen #helenoxenbury #speechpathology #languagedevelopment #remotetherapy #ndisprovider

18.01.2022 Book Week 2020 Franjesca’s choice is Green Eggs and Ham by Dr Seuss. The Grinch tells Sam his dislike for green eggs and ham. Sam then starts to suggest different places and scenarios where the Grinch might want to try the unusual food. Sam is creative and tells the Grinch to try the green eggs and ham ‘on a boat, with a goat, in the rain, on a train’. Franjesca loves this book because of the clever rhyming and the creative illustrations which take up the entire page. The rhy...me, rhythm and repetition makes the book sound like a song when you read it and keeps you engaged the whole way through. Speech and language goals this book could address include: pronouns(I, you, me, them). modal verbs (could, should, will, may). negatives (not). This book also can be used to discuss trying new foods and being flexible. Guess what happens when Grinch finally does try green eggs and ham? #drseuss #greeneggsandham #trynewthings #rhymingbooks #bookweek2020 #speechpathology #speechpathologyaustralia #fanniebay #topendnt #territorykids #speechtherapyideas #languagedevelopment #fussyeaters #sosfeedingtherapy

16.01.2022 It’s BOOK WEEK Fran Ernie Dances to the Didgeridoo It was a collaboration between Alison Lester and Gunbalanya School. Kids and adults all love this book and locals really identify with the pictures. Fran recently met a lady who told her she was the model for the girl walking with the pig beside the floodplain.. while she was there she looked up and there it was- a pig in her yard a few metres away! ... Fran loves this book because it is so vibrant, and a beautiful depiction of life in Arnhemland. Ernie moves to Gunbalanya with his parents one wet season. He sends back letters to his friends down south over the year and they act out some of his adventures themselves. Fran has used this book to help kids achieve various language goals such as - understanding and using pronouns verbs finding pictures from description sequencing and using the concepts- before and after What is your favourite book? 12.01.2022 I have a new-found respect for Delta. But just think, with all her resources, if she found this experience difficult, how is it for the average person? Good to see shes back to #communicatingwithconfidence with the help of her speech pathologist.

12.01.2022 Think Ill be able taking even more pics now

11.01.2022 On this Sorry Day, by coincidence, a clients wife was telling me how their community of Lajamanu was founded. Many remote communities are the the result of a church mission. But this community was created by the Welfare department re-locating people displaced from their original country. They had been displaced following the Coniston massacres in 1928 when over 60 Aboriginal men women and children were killed. My client returns closer to country tomorrow, after some intensive speech and physio therapy. But they have to wait in Katherine until bio-security areas are open.

11.01.2022 Did you know today is Global Accessibility Awareness Day? GAAD is an awareness day focusing on digital access and inclusion for the more than one billion people with disabilities and impairments. It is marked annually on the third Thursday of May.
