25.01.2022 TEWLS had a busy schedule of outreach legal clinics this past week! We snapped this photo from outside the Belyuen Women's Centre. A new addition to the fence with a powerful, important message. The Centre is such a wonderful, welcoming place for local women to have a yarn, share, create and learn. Next week we have solicitors accompanied by our Indigenous Community and Project Officer heading out to Bagot Community, Acacia Community, Knuckey Lagoon Community and Palmerston. You can call TEWLS on (08) 8982 3000 or head to our website www.tewls.org.au to see the TEWLS outreach legal clinic schedule and book in for an appointment.

21.01.2022 TW, CW: rape, sexual assault "The insensitive treatment of sexual offence victims in Australian criminal justice systems is a highly charged issue. Criminal trials continue to hinge on rape myths and stereotypes that work to challenge victims’ character and testimony... Our separate research has found that victim lawyers could enhance victims’ procedural justice experiences, and afford them the respect, dignity and courtesy to which they are entitled."

10.01.2022 A report released last week by the NT Anti-Discrimination Commissioner shows that the number of discrimination complaints lodged by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the NT has doubled in the past year (103 complaints lodged in FY 2019-2020, up from 54 complaints lodged in FY 2018-19). The spike in numbers may not necessarily indicate an increase in discrimination (which remains prevalent), but rather "increased confidence" in the complaints process and "a growing willingness to report issues". Read more in the article below. TEWLS can provide free legal advice in relation to discrimination and complaints. To make an appointment, please contact TEWLS by phone on (08) 8982 3000, email to [email protected] or via our website at www.tewls.org.au

07.01.2022 Are you 60 or over, LGBTIQ+, and living in Australia? You might be interested in completing the below survey. The survey is being run by professors from Southern Cross University, the University of the Sunshine Coast and Western Sydney University, in collaboration with the National LGBTI Health Alliance. The purpose of the study is to take a ‘temperature check’ of how older LGBTIQ+ people in Australia are impacted by COVID-19, and to understand how they are managing their s...ituations. TEWLS aren't involved with this survey - however, we are sharing it because the outcomes of surveys of this type are valuable and go a long way to assisting in service provision Australia-wide Please note the survey closes this Friday 4 December 2020

06.01.2022 Reconciliation Week 2021 #morethanaword #NRW2021 This week is Reconciliation Week! It is a week to recognise the incredible contributions that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people make to this country, to acknowledge and celebrate their deep, rich history and connection to land and culture, and to use this knowledge to come together and strengthen as a nation. The theme for 2021 is "More than a word. Reconciliation takes action." ... We strive to action this every single day at TEWLS, but we know there's always more to be done. We'll be checking out Reconciliation Australia's "20 Actions for Reconciliation in 2021". Take a look to see how you can do more: https://nrw.reconciliation.org.au/actions-for-reconciliati/ We also want to celebrate the Reconciliation Week art work below, designed by Jessica Johnson, a descendent of the Warumungu and Wombaya people, north of Tennant Creek. We are so proud to share Jessica's stunning work. Check out more of Jessica's design and content work here: Nungala Creative

05.01.2022 Today, service providers put on an end-of-year BBQ at Knuckey Lagoon Community. Always great to catch up over a snag and some fruit juice, and to support our communities. We even made some furry friends along the way (who happen to be very photogenic!)

05.01.2022 "Culture is the basis of our being if we can get programs happening, getting girls sitting around yarning in circles, learning our language, learning the traditional side We know we'll never get it back one hundred per cent, but we have to figure out how we can survive in a contemporary environment. There's a lot of support that we need we can't do this by ourselves."... _______________________________________ The Wiyi Yani U Thangani (Women's Voices) report, by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner June Oscar AO, was released yesterday. This landmark report has come about following years of listening to the challenges and aspirations of Indigenous women and girls. Australian Human Rights Commission

02.01.2022 When we are out on community we love to share in the stories and successes of community members. Today, proud Larrakia woman Dorothy Fejo visited our Acacia Community legal clinic with the artwork and medal design she created for the 2019 Arafura Games. We felt privileged to hear about the story and concept behind her design and her connection to country. We were blown away by the beauty of her artwork and couldn’t help but take a few proud snaps with Dorothy’s permission

01.01.2022 The federal budget was handed down this week. In the months leading up to the budget, women's organisations from across the country pleaded for financial assistance. Unfortunately, those pleas did not get up. Here in the NT, women's legal services are underfunded by $4.9 million. That means $4.9 million is urgently required to address the immediate unmet legal needs of women. We can only imagine the incredible difference that could be made to the lives of NT women if those funds were provided.
