20.01.2022 The importance of phalangeal alignment and hoof pastern axis is debated across the social platforms. This highly visual and detailed discussion with two of the ...worlds leading podiatry experts delves into the understandings of the importance of optimal hoof balance. How to assess it, the benefits of the ideal and the predispositions of poor alignment. Highly recommended educational videocast for anyone involved in horses. This is a long but important videocast, it can be watched in sections and/or listened to as a podcast, follow the main link. 18.01.2022 Topline Equine Services is gearing up to offer Metron Podiatry Scans in WA in 2021 onwards. It is the best way to accurately and objectively measure alignment in the bony columns of the leg and we have found through over 30 years of experience this is very closely correlating to posture and performance. In particular the negative angles in hinds are extremely relevant to jumping horses and indeed all horses being expected to perform at speed over distance. Achieving bony colu...mn alignment is intimately affected by the trimming technique and shoe placement and we have Geoff Ahmat, our Master Farrier, available to interpret the Podiatry Scans and offer farriery prescriptions. We are also involved in developing polyurethane shoes that will be as light as aluminium, as durable as steel and as shock absorbing that polyurethane is known to be. The future of performance horse shoeing is not favouring the application of heavy steel shoes based on the science behind why racehorses do not race in heavy steel shoes. We will be sharing our work and the work of others dedicated to this emerging field that offers so much benefit in soundness, performance enhancement and longevity to our sport horses - jumping horses especially. 17.01.2022 Phalangeal Alignment - the Holy Grail of good farriery and what every sport horse needs to achieve maximum performance, soundness and longevity in sport. There ...are some gifted farriers in the world who have built in X-ray vision but with the amazing technological advancements in Xrays and software in the modern world today there is now the opportunity to powerfully visually document whether the farrier’s naked eye has got it right or not. You don’t wheel balance a car with the naked eye and the future of farriery (the cornerstone of horse welfare in fact) will be utilising all this technology to accurately measure a farrier’s work and the horse’s fitness for purpose when being asked to compete at speed or leave the ground jumping. This will bring great benefit to the horses themselves and avoid having to deal with a particular farrier or a vet’s ego. The Bony Column simply either is aligned or it isn’t. The horse industry must embrace this new direction just as human dentistry now relies on dental X-rays so must the horse industry question the farriers by measuring exactly what they are actually doing when they mess with living tissue (the horse’s foot) Maybe it will ruffle some feathers but will go a long way towards ensuring that our precious sport horses that take so much time and money to produce will avoid being broken down. 17.01.2022 Studs are utterly essential if you are asking them to leave the ground
16.01.2022 Fantastic technology to reveal exactly what positive changes a farrier is making over time to the bony column alignment and the postural stance of the horse.
15.01.2022 It all comes down to good trimming - the cumulative effect of a good cut is reflected in the quality of the hoof wall
12.01.2022 External parameters that are the landmarks for correct trimming!
12.01.2022 I was doing some research on horses eyesight and found it fascinating so I thought I would share some facts with you guys - feel free to share if you have a h...orse who regularly spooks, have a read! Did you know horses have the largest eyes out of ALL land mammals? The first image is a humans eyesight and what we see. The second is a horses eyesight. They have a blind spot directly in front of them and cannot merge their vision into one image like we can. This makes it all the more incredible at how the horse can jump, especially when we ask them to jump skinny fences and combinations Horses do not focus their eyes the way we do. Have you ever seen a horse raising and lowering its head as it looks at an object? It does that to adjust the focal length, moving until the object comes into focus on its retina. When you see a horse shy at a sudden movement behind him or next to him, his peripheral vision has sighted the movement but has not yet had time to focus on it. Even when the horse has focused as best it can, its sight is only three-fifths that of a human. In other words, when looking at an object twenty feet away, the horse sees only as much detail as a person would see if the object were thirty-five feet away. Simply, when you are out riding and see a strange object ahead, you will recognize what you are seeing long before your horse does. So we can cut our horses some slack when they spook at something that we think is silly Another interesting fact is that the right eye reports to the right side of the brain and the left eye reports to the left side of the brain. This explains why horses may spook on the right rein and then after showing them the object they go past it fine, but when you change rein they still spook at it again on the left rein. Contrary to popular belief, horses CAN also perceive depth. "Apparently, horses have many of the same depth-detecting skills that we have. They have true stereoscopic vision, despite having lateral eyes." When you really think about it, isn’t it incredible that we, as a predatory being, can ride upon the back of a horse, a prey animal who’s every instinct tells it to run from us? Horses are amazing
12.01.2022 Food for thought
11.01.2022 This product has serious potential
10.01.2022 Important information!! One of the reasons we preach PA & the importance of alignment For every 1deg of change in solar angle (PA essentially) there is an inc...rease in force on the DDFT by 4% Eliasher et al, 2004 Vet Journal
08.01.2022 Tetanus Again! Last weekend had to put to sleep a mare with tetanus (see video). Uncertain vaccination history and a recent foot abscess treated by farrier wit...h no tetanus vaccine or antitoxin. Foot abscesses, infected hoof cracks and stone bruises are a great way to get tetanus and farriers that treat them either don't know this or forget to tell the owner to speak to their vet about tetanus prevention. Please pass this information onto your farrier! Tetanus spores are abundant in horse faeces and therefore, any soil where horses live. Soil and mud contaminates foot wounds and abscesses. The spores need an environment with little or no oxygen - like a crack or abscess under a horse's hoof wall or sole - and hence perfect conditions to get the tetanus bacteria to grow and produce the toxin. Easily preventable disease and terrible death! I will post again the tetanus post I put up a few years ago with information about the disease and vaccination etc. Keep your horses up to date!
07.01.2022 Crucial information
07.01.2022 Fundamental to maintaining soundness
05.01.2022 This is what Geoff Ahmat and our Topline farriers (and other good farriers) have been doing for many years. This information is priceless for the sake of the horses and the horse industry. In 2021 Topline Equine Services will change direction to really focus on teaching correct trimming because this is the foundation upon which the choice can then be made to either nail/glue on a shoe or use a hoof boot depending on owners choice of hoof protection. However - the future is m...oving away from nailing on steel horse shoes and the future will be a preferred use of composite shoes placed on a correctly trimmed hoof. Amazing technology is at work in the world now creating horse shoes made of alternative materials such as polyurethane. There is ZERO scientific data that supports the notion that hot shoeing/hand made forged steel shoes etc are somehow better for horses and are a superior farriery method. The basis of good farriery is actually all in the trim!! See more
04.01.2022 Very common problem in both barefoot and shod horses and relates hugely to performance
04.01.2022 I agree with Wayne - we are seeing so much NPA - even from farriers who are supposed to be the best in the industry. I feel the results of poor bony column alignment playing out in their upper body when I get called out for chiropractic/acupuncture treatments. We are advocating Metron Hoofscan analysis on Xrays. Objective measurement - no ego.
04.01.2022 Advertisement presented by Trigon Auctions * On Friday 17 July 2020, Stal Tops, the Van de Lageweg family and Frederik De Backer launched a new auction platform, Trigon Auctions.
01.01.2022 Topline Equine Services is also going down this path of embracing Metron software. For over 30 years our Master farrier Geoff Ahmat has fixed many problem horses without needing to use any such technology because he has an uncanny eye - but this technology is definitely the way of the future. It is a simple objective measurement of bony column alignment and it supersedes ego.
