22.01.2022 ! Now that Ive been back treating horses again for the last 2 weeks, its clear that some owners need ... that their horses fitness levels might have taken a hit during lockdown If youre wondering why your legs are aching...give a thought to your horses muscles as well If you decided to temporarily hang your boots up during lockdown, or limited riding to just hacking, or simply stopped jumping. I cant enough the importance of bringing your horse back into work . Not only will your horse have lost cardiovascular fitness but musculoskeletal condition as well for the discipline. This essentially means your horse will not be able to pick up where you left off, without exposing your horse to risk of injury, from of their muscles/tendons/ligaments. These structures need over time Please bear this in mind especially when youre booking XC courses / showjumping arenas etc. Its easy to get caught up in the excitement and forget about the needs of our horses Please remember that horses are not , and if they are pushed beyond their capabilities they can both and #equineosteopathy #equinelife #equestrianosteopathy #equestrianlife #equineperformancetherapy #equinesportsperformance #equineperfromance #equinetherapy #horseriding #showjumping #eventing #dressage #equestrian

22.01.2022 New client today whos rider has noticed her horse has not been going 100% under saddle Hoping to have this boy back to his usual self ASAP.

21.01.2022 Shoulder movement in slow motion. See how far the shoulder moves back, and where the tissue hits my leg. A VERY common area for restriction. Now imagine a saddle strapped on top of that.

19.01.2022 Started treating this horse recently. Horse presented with bulged offside shoulder and rider reported horse felt uneven and stiff when working to the left. Owner had saddle professionally fitted and I started treating him. After first treatment rider said horses movement is freeing up and we can see bulge decreasing slightly. Very pleasing result and horse keeps improving after each treatment.

19.01.2022 Special post event massage for Freckles aiding in her recovery. Big weekend for her and a fantastic result.

07.01.2022 WormCheck Mythbusting No 2. TAPEWORMS IN RUMINANTS Theres a quote by Sir David Attenborough where when asked if theres an animal he doesnt care much for, he ...states he is not that fond of tapeworms. Which, as a parasitologist, I take great offence to. There are parasites FAR worse than tapeworms that could perhaps choose as your least favourite animal (e.g. bot flies, screw flies, guinea worm etc etc). There is no single myth I am aiming to dispel with this post, rather just to provide some information to dispel the many small myths I see/hear people say about tapeworms in ruminants. For ruminants (cows/sheep/goats) there are two types of tapeworm. The first is of the genus Moniezia. These tapeworms live their adult life in the intestines of livestock. One could say that they are mostly harmless as parasites they do not suck blood or cause protein loss (and therefore weight loss), rather they just go with the flow of the intestines and live by absorbing gastric juices. These tapeworms will lay eggs that pass out in the manure, the eggs go through a development stage on pasture (involving a grass/soil mite) before being ingested again by livestock, and the cycle starts again. Sometimes, rather than eggs, segments off the tapeworm will fall off and be seen as white squares in the manure. The need to treat for Moniezia species of tapeworms is debatable. Treatment is with the drug praziquantel, and studies comparing treatment against no treatment showed no different in weight gains in lambs. Therefore Id suggest that worming purely to remove tapeworms is not a profitable option. The second type of tapeworm that infect livestock (and us!) are hydatid tapeworms. These ones are nasty, with a more complicated lifecycle. The adult tapeworm lives in carnivores usually dogs and foxes. Like all worms, the tapeworm lays eggs that pass out in the faeces of the host: the dog. The eggs are then ingested by an intermediate host: cattle, sheep, goats, wallabies, even us if we are unlucky (and unhygienic). Inside the intermediate host the immature tapeworm encysts, forming a cyst/many cysts in a organs, usually the liver or lungs. Unlucky animals and people may even develop cysts in their brains. If dogs are fed uncooked meat or offal from livestock, they can ingest the cysts, which develop into adult worms within the dog and the cycle begins again. Because livestock are intermediate hosts for these hydatid tapeworms, there is no sign of infection, except at necropsy. Control of these tapeworms is best achieved through management: keep livestock away from areas contaminated by dog faeces, and do not feed uncooked meat or offal to dogs. In conclusion: if you see tapeworm segments in your sheeps manure, there is not much to worry about as these are from the Moniezia tapeworms. Hydatid tapeworm cysts can only been seen in livestock after butchering. If you see cysts within the organs then you should worry, those organs should be condemned, and any dogs that the livestock have been in contact with should be checked for tapeworms. If you want more information, google Hydatid tapeworms or Echinococcus granulosus. You will get beautifully disgusting photos.

05.01.2022 Although it was wet & cold it was great to be back out at pony club again!

01.01.2022 A lovely quote below from Carl Hester. I enjoyed reading this so much! We want the horse in self carriage, and that means the rider has to be in self car...riage and without a strong core, that is very difficult to do. It is worth riders spending the time getting the core strong, then you won’t need your arms or legs to hold you in the saddle they must be soft and independent of your body. Cheers...Jess

01.01.2022 Feeling very fortunate to be able to ride my horse out on the trail on this beautiful day
