25.01.2022 Port Augusta FISHING GUIDE January Usually, January is the beginning of the second run of large Blue Swimmer Crabs here at Port Augusta. Through December there was a huge increase in the smaller 6-7cm size Crabs. Should still be able to catch a feed but this year is slightly different as it always is. From about the old Power Station southwards is the best area. At low tide you can walk and rake for them at places like Port Paterson, Chinaman Creek and Miranda on the eastern ...side of the gulf or along the front of the shacks on the western side of the gulf. If you are boating use drop nets from the boat. Remember 3 x Double Ringed Crab Nets per boat. The Trumpeter still rules supreme in the deeper waters forcing many fishers to try in the shallows for fish such as Silver Whiting, Tommies and Garfish. In deeper waters try in 3-4m at the end of the outgoing tide in a sandy or white bottom. You might pick up some Salmon, Tommies and Flathead and with the odd King George Whiting. Once the tide starts running again the Trumpeters will take over. Good luck and hope you all have tight lines. See more

20.01.2022 Luke Frost-Watson caught this beauty on the 7th March 2020 along the Eastern Bank here at Port Augusta. 48cm King George Whiting. Good sign a few Whiting are starting to move into the region as Summer ends and we move into Autumn. Sharpen your hooks As per usual the first fish start to appear at the top of the gulf first and then start to filter south after a few weeks. I would be trying just along the front of the shacks off the blue line as have heard a few Whiting being caught there also.

13.01.2022 Port Augusta FISHING GUIDE November The Kingfish Season is gradually coming to an end with another good year here at Port Augusta for Kingfish, with many who have put in the hours being successful. They are still about but become increasing difficult to find and entice to bite. Appears the current fishing methods are sustainable with a lot of fishers catching and releasing. The early run of Crabs through October and into November has arrived however they go off for a while ju...st before Christmas. Salmon Trout, Tommies, Garfish and Snook are some of the scale fish you can catch this time of year in the mid to top layer of water. I would be trying along the edges of banks in around 4m of water. Yellow-fin or Silver Whiting are another species worth targeting during the warmer months. Best areas are just off the mangroves on the intertidal zone in about a metre or even less of water. Best baits are green prawns, blood worms, cockle or squid with a bit of berley. November sees the weather going all over the place with hot spells usually only broken up by strong southerly winds. It’s either 35-45 degrees with a chance of a few calm days or blowing from either the south or north making it a bit uncomfortable. As the water temperatures rises those fish which prefer the cooler waters are now well on the move southwards and the fish species that prefer the warmer temperatures are now moving in. The mighty Trumpeter being one of these. They are well and truly established in the deeper waters and makes fishing for King George Whiting almost impossible. Good luck and hope you all have tight lines.

03.01.2022 Christmas holidays is the perfect time to get out and try for some Crabs and raking can be a great way to catch a feed for those without a boat so we've put together a list of some things to consider 1. Tides - a tide of lower than 0.5m is usually required 2. Weather - preferably calm or light winds 3. Location - front of the Shacks, Chinamen creek and Port Paterson are usually good spots to try when raking for crabs 4. Equipment - a good pair of boots for walking through the... mud and water, appropriate sun protective gear ie. sunscreen, hat, long sleeve shirt etc., a tub, bucket or bag for collecting all your crabs, a crab measure to make sure they are of legal size and of course a crab rake! Our crab rakes are currently on special and can be purchased in store - Wooden rakes SPECIAL price $14.50 and Aluminium rakes with removeable head SPECIAL price $17.95 https://www.topothegulfmarine.com.au/crab-nets-rakes/ See more
