20.01.2022 An international study co-led by #MCRI has discovered nine new genes linked to the most severe type of childhood speech disorder, #apraxia. The study is the lar...gest in the world to date in children with severe and persistent #speech disorders, specifically apraxia. Children with apraxia fail to learn to speak clearly and combine sounds properly. The timing and sequencing of their words are also affected. One in 1000 children has apraxia, and despite intensive investigation the genetic origins of this debilitating speech disorder have remained largely unexplained, until now. Eight of the nine new genes found are critical in a process which turns specific language genes "on" or "off" The findings will help neuroscientists and speech #pathologists intervene earlier and develop more targeted treatments for children. https://www.mcri.edu.au//new-genes-linked-severe-childhood

16.01.2022 Whats this thing called Dysphagia? Dysphagia (dis-fay-juh) is difficulty swallowing, and today (13 March) is Swallowing Awareness Day. The theme for the day i...n 2019 is, Dysphagia: A difficult diagnosis to swallow. People who have trouble swallowing are at risk of choking, poor nutrition and dehydration, while babies and children with difficulty feeding my not take in enough nutrients to support growth and brain development. Speech pathologists are the professionals who assess and treat swallowing disorders. Every day speech pathologists work with families and individuals across the lifespan to ease the burden of dysphagia. On Swallowing Awareness Day, 13 March, help us spread the word about dysphagia. We have a range of materials to learn more about dysphagia. #dysphagia #SwallowAware2019 #wespeechies #SLPeeps
