25.01.2022 And not to be outdone, these lovely Pinctada Maxima mabe pearls are just looking so classically beautiful!

22.01.2022 Last night's sunset was a grey and silver affair. Beautiful in its own way!

22.01.2022 Today on Turtle Head Island, we have another visitor! Found this fella in the pump shed this morning. At first Bron thought it was Monty (Python) but he's smaller and paler - thinking a Brown Tree Snake. Very relaxed.

21.01.2022 Today on Turtle Head Island, Bron was cleaning shell at the end of the wharf while Rusty was doing the hunter-gatherer thing. This beauty was just short of 80cm and will do us for two dinners. Thanks Rust.

21.01.2022 Yesterday on Turtle Head Island, Rusty had the day off! He managed to drop a Cooktown orchid on his toes and went into melt-down. He would like it known that the orchid was attached to a rather large piece of mango tree.

21.01.2022 Today on Turtle Head Island, something completely different! Rusty has been working on these beauties for a while now to get them just right. Pinctada Maxima mabe pearls, floating in a purple resin sea, surrounded by a sterling silver mount. We think they are just stunning. Available soon at Cape York Ice and Tackle in New Mapoon.

20.01.2022 Check out these fellas! Painted Crayfish babies - one is a decent size. Rusty found these in our pearl shell baskets - they like to eat shellfish, so they were evicted! Such extravagant colour and design.

20.01.2022 Rusty is on notice to get the screen into the laundry back up! Bron cannot cook, eat or relax with bats flying around her head.

19.01.2022 Today on Turtle Head Island, we harvested some beautiful Pteria Penguin shell mabe pearls. Check out those colours!

19.01.2022 This is what happens when your boat lives in the water of an extremely healthy river system. And there is only one way to get rid of it!

19.01.2022 Last night's sunset - no words.

18.01.2022 Last night's sunset was inspired by Mr Tom Smith, who LOVES a good storm. It's still a long way off, but creeping ever closer. Bring on the Wet!

18.01.2022 Today on Turtle Head Island, while Modesty is innocently sleeping, Bron has prepared a new 'holding cell' down on the wharf, right next to her shell-cleaning table. Pretty soon now, Modesty is going to become a wharf dog! (There are multiple uses for pearl shell baskets!)

17.01.2022 Today on Turtle Head Island, while Bron was down the wharf cleaning shell, Rusty was busy in his dusty hidey-hole shaping mabe pearls to make into beautiful pendants for our little island shop.

17.01.2022 Love the stories in this lino print!

16.01.2022 It has been a while since we had anything but a grey sunset, so last night was kind of nice.

16.01.2022 Today's beach finds on Turtle Head Island! Yikes!

16.01.2022 Windy weather means that Rusty gets motivated to create beautiful jewellery! Hoping to have some new pieces to show you soon.

15.01.2022 How good is this!!

14.01.2022 And today on Turtle Head Island, it's off to work he goes! Bron's nursing the leg again and filling in the tax forms - so exciting!

14.01.2022 Timber for Rusty's next project , but only half of what is needed so far. Any ideas what he is planning?

13.01.2022 Very windy again here today on Turtle Head Island. The side beach is almost surfable! Some pretty things hanging around there too.

13.01.2022 Today on Turtle Head Island, we would like to share with you the results of four years' work! We are thrilled with the way Rusty has transformed our Pteria Penguin mabe pearls into gorgeous pieces of unique jewellery. Please view the journey in the short video in the following post. Available soon at Cape York Ice and Tackle in New Mapoon.

12.01.2022 Today on Turtle Head Island, we are enjoying our bush orchids! These little beauties grow wild on the island, so they are quite happy in our garden near the kitchen. Love the crazy shapes and colours, and the way they catch the sunshine.

12.01.2022 Anyone who knows Rusty well can imagine how excited he was to find this little treasure on one of his rare beach walks. He reckons it's a sign that one of his life-long dreams will soon be a reality.

11.01.2022 Today on Turtle Head Island, we are back into cleaning shell again. Bron's not sure about the work commitment of her wharf-mates....and no, we have not bought a speed-boat for water-skiing in Escape River! These guys ran out of fuel yesterday evening on their way home, so left the boat here and hitched a ride with a mate. Picked it up about midday today.

09.01.2022 Today on Turtle Head Island, we are cleaning shell, as all good pearl farmers do! Rusty is out on the longlines and Bron has finished cleaning these lovely big Pteria Penguin shell - they are ready for seeding. She was also busy admiring a Black Bass who was big enough to have his own sucker-fish! (Thinking of our wonderful pearl technician Shoichi Mizuno, who LOVES catching Black Bass).

09.01.2022 Today on Turtle Head Island, the weather is giving us cause for grumpiness! I guess we are a bit spoilt, because even when it's desolate, it still looks beautiful.

08.01.2022 This is about the Coral Reef Centre at James Cook University - quite alarming!

08.01.2022 Today on Turtle Head Island, we are grateful that the internet is back up after two days with nothing! I guess good, old Telstra sorted it out. Since the wind was blowing 20+knots, outside work was restricted too. So Bron got the tax finished (so exciting....) and Rusty was able to get lots of mabe pearl jewellery completed. These little lovelies available soon at Cape York Ice and Tackle in New Mapoon.

08.01.2022 Today on Turtle Head Island, it is a drop-dead gorgeous day! Blue sky, clear water, light breeze - perfect for being on the water. And no-one for miles and miles and miles!

07.01.2022 Today on Turtle Head Island, we waved good-bye to our visitors, Paul and Jane! Happy 60th birthday to Paul - who is still cheeky, even though he is getting on a bit. Lovely, lovely people!

07.01.2022 Today on Turtle Head Island, it's Rusty's birthday!!! Lots of carrot and pineapple cake, puppy games, jigsaw puzzling and evening cheese, dips, olives and bubbly! Bron still needs him and feeds him. (Subtle hint right there.)

07.01.2022 Grotty Boy in his command post yesterday, keeping guard while Bron walks on the beach. Such a good boy.

07.01.2022 Awesome lino prints!

07.01.2022 Last night's camp oven dinner was a cracker! Roast chicken - not burnt - and vegies. It's a whole-afternoon gig and is our equivalent of going out for dinner. There's just something about sitting around a fire, watching the sunset and smelling your dinner cooking.

07.01.2022 Today on Turtle Head Island, puppy-holiday is over and it's back to work we go! Even Modesty is involved, in her special pen next to the cleaning table. After a bit of a complain and turning over her water bowl, she settled down, killed a brush and had a sleep.

06.01.2022 Today on Turtle Head Island, the weather is a bit like this. So Rusty is using the time to make and create, while Bron gets the cottage ready for guests tomorrow. Hoping it clears up for them!

05.01.2022 Yesterday was town-day! Time to check the mail, stock up on groceries, catch up with VIPs at Cape York Ice and Tackle and chat with lots of people down-town. We were actually down to our last slice of bread and Bron had to resort to home-made stuffed naan bread for lunch - Rusty's comment "Can we run out of bread more often please?"

04.01.2022 Today on Turtle Head Island, the wind has dropped enough for Rusty to get back out cleaning shell on the longline. Bron was able to hobble out to the end of the wharf with Grotty Boy and put some baby Pteria Penguin into a basket too!

03.01.2022 Today on Turtle Head Island, it is just drop-dead gorgeous! Such a blue, blue day - best time of the year.

03.01.2022 Take a look at the journey of our Pteria Penguin mabe pearls, from spat to beauty!

03.01.2022 This beautiful Pteria Penguin mabe pearl pendant on sterling silver mount and chain, up on the website this morning. www.torrespearls.com

03.01.2022 Spot the Grot! Bron had to seriously question Grotty Boy's commitment to his guard-dog duties when he went on strike half-way down the beach yesterday. At least he was still on alert - just from a distance! And he did begrudgingly join her after a while.

03.01.2022 Today on Turtle Head Island, Bron is resting up after falling on the raft and bruising her leg (again). So a bit of jewellery and computer work on the agenda. These little lovelies were just finished yesterday and were put up on our website this morning. Head over there for details. www.torrespearls.com

03.01.2022 So Bron was cleaning shell down on the wharf this morning when a school of llittle trevally came through gobbling bait fish. This caused a school of fingermark to get in on the act, and because they were so big and making so much popping noise, Bron thought they were barra. Just very, very big fingermark. Hmmmmmm - might be time to cast a line!

02.01.2022 Yesterday's beach finds - cute.

02.01.2022 Check out this amazing lino print by Joey Laifoo. One of the old pearling luggers and all the stories surrounding it. Amazing detail!

01.01.2022 First day of Spring! We aren't really feeling it here on Turtle Head Island today - windy and grey. Meanwhile, in the laundry an uneasy truce has been declared. Battle-lines will be reformed tonight at sun-down. My money is on Monty.

01.01.2022 So Rusty has puppy-proofed the Lodge where we sit for sunset, and sunset has now become psycho-puppy zoomies time.

01.01.2022 Today on Turtle Head Island, the Australian Army have arrived! Big barge sitting off the wharf - they were coming ashore for a cuppa, but the wind and swell have made it a bit dangerous for their little boat to launch. Grotty Boy was soooo excited when it came around the corner!
