07.01.2022 *** Joint venture project at Kemus (Erub) restores monument in time for Coming of the Light celebrations *** The Torres Strait Regional Authority Land and Sea M...anagement Unit (LSMU) Rangers along with, other community-based government and non-government agencies comprising teams from My pathways, Strait Support, Torres Strait Island Regional Council and Community have successfully undertaken a Restoration Joint Venture Project at Kemus (Erub) in time for this year’s celebrations. The joint venture project involved a full site rejuvenation, which you can see from the accompanying photographs. The Coming of the Light is a holiday celebrated by the Erubam Le People and the Torres Strait region on 1 July each year. It recognises the adoption of Christianity through island communities during the late nineteenth century. Erubam Le people and the Torres Strait region living on the islands or on the mainland come together to honour this anniversary every year. Islanders of all faiths celebrate the Coming of the Light in a festival like no other in Australia.
