18.01.2022 CAMELIAS Camellias are amongst the world's best flowering plants. They are hardy and disease resistant, most varieties have attractive, glossy green foliage, and they put on their fabulous flower display in the cooler months of the year when the rest of the garden often looks bare and uninteresting. Camellias are considered relatively slow growing and as a result all species will be quite happy in a pot or tub. When planting in the ground make sure the hole is twice the s...ize of the root ball. Backfill with well draining slightly acidic soil ensuring the top of the root ball is level with the ground. Compact the ground around the plant and mulch ensuring there is space between the mulch and the stem and give the plant a deep, thorough initial watering. Camellias like to stay moist but not wet so check the ground at least 10cm below the surface to ensure you do not over water them. Fertilise in autumn and spring alternating between Organic Extra and a specific Camellia fertilizer. See more

05.01.2022 What to do now in the garden? - Attack weeds before they seed. Mow, hoe or pull them up then mulch to suppress germinating seeds. - Look out for Aphids on all new growth especially on roses. Blast aphids with the hose first. If that doesn't work use a low toxic spray such as Pyrethrum. - Feed the garden including lawns with a slow release fertiliser e.g. Organic Extra - Re-pot tired potted plants into fresh potting mix.... - Increase watering as the temperature increases, particularly for plants with lots of lush new growth.
