20.01.2022 Three Phase Step Down Auto-transformers (also referred to as voltage converters) are designed to convert an input of 415VAC (Australian power grid voltage) through the transformer to an output of either 200VAC and 220VAC (transformer has two outputs taps to allow for 200VAC and 220VAC). 19.01.2022 Innovative design just completed - a single phase to 3 phase converter which plugs into a standard 10A 240v Aust outlet and produces 3 phase 41.5 v 3 ph supply + neutral .The power rating is 600 va 3 phase. The idea is to use this converter in tafes/universities to allow students to do 3 phase experiments or single phase loads at a safe voltage. This is an innovative but useful teaching tool. You will be able to adjust & equalise the voltages to with 1% between the phase ...to phase voltages and the phase to neutral voltages on the LV side ( 41.5v) is difficult. Normally one phase will be considerably lower. You have to have more switching devices and carefully tune the run capacitors and adjust the taps on the output transformer. Normal single phase to 3 phase converters would be no where near the accuracy and equalisation of the voltages that this project was able to achieve. The phase shift between each phase voltage also had to be equalised as well as the absolute value of the phase to neutral voltage. The phase shift was 120 +/- 5 Deg .That if the voltages to neutral were adjust to be equal.This is what the power authorities require of the 3 phase 415 v supply. Mike. See more

13.01.2022 Tortech releases its first research paper co-authored with Majid Malekpour and Professor Toan Phung yesterday. Entitled Analysis of Core Loss Studies of Three Phase Isolation Transformers under voltage harmonic conditions. The talk at Murdoch university was highly successful. The topic explains core loss in Three phase Transformers due to harmonics in the voltage wave form. Essentially - how the transformer is effected by the harmonic distorition of the voltage wave form. 08.01.2022 High Voltage Test Transformer Design. Here is a cross sectional drawing of a HV test single phase transformer. The insulation medium is transformer oil. Please note the electrical stress lines and the position of the insulation barriers and the shape and position of the various stress shields. The stress is carefully controlled and the insulation barriers ( in combination with the transformer oil) is very well designed.This is a 100 kv test transformer that is partial discharge free at 60kv rms ++ This is an example of good insulation design but more importantly good electrical stress control. #threephase #transformer #highvoltage #threephase #highvoltage #electrical

07.01.2022 Winding rectangular Current Transformers. In looking at the photos below Note how the CTs have windings on all 4 legs of the CT core. The coupling of the flux between the primary and the secondary windings is even. That is ,each secondary is equally coupled to the primary . Hence this produces a low reactance CT. This is important when there are more than one primary cable or bus bar in the primary circuits or when the single primary conductor is not centrally situated in... the middle position of the rectangular core. Each cable or bus bar must equally couple to all the secondary turns. The attached photos are 1500/ 1 CT with a 1000turn tap. And yes the 1000turn tap must be equally coupled as is the 1500 turn tap. 06.01.2022 An urban transit rectifier 3 phase transformer is used to supply the overhead 1500V DC power to the Sydney and Melbourne Metro railway system. Careful design and consideration is required.The dielectric strength of epoxy and the impact of air gaps in the insulation structure of the transformer is critical to reduce the partial discharge to less than10pC for the Cast resin transformer insulation structure. 04.01.2022 We would like congratulate the NSW Grid management on how they met maximum demand last week during Sydneys heatwave with a temperature in Sydney of 48DegC and the disconnect of the Snowy Mountains energy supply of 2000Mw -which represented 15% of the Grid capacity. This was quite an achievement! Great management with no Victorian power available as well. In the future renewables including wind, power and hydro will be able to provide back-up for this lack of capacity. #renewableenergy #energy #renewables #wind #grid #gridreliability
