08.01.2022 Agronomy Update from GT Nitrogen: the season is looking good and many growers will need to consider top up Nitrogen to capture yield and ensure reasonable pr...otein. There are a few cases of N deficiency showing up now due to uneven applications from fertiliser spreaders. This is a warning sign that crops are using up N supplies rapidly in the good conditions. Now is the time to be tissue testing big crops. Canola Sclerotinia: apothecia has already been found in the northern region. If the topsoil remains damp during early flowering, spraying for Sclerotinia will be likely in problem areas and high yielding scenarios. The 2 best options in our mind, that show good consistent results are 400-450ml Prosaro or 600-650ml Aviator. Aviator is $2/ha more expensive at these rates but trial data shows it lasting slightly longer and would suit the first spray in thick crops. Late radish sprays: paddocks sprayed early with Jaguar and problem radish paddocks tend to be having another germination of radish. Ensure you talk to your Agronomist about safe 24-D timing and options for tankmixing liquid fertiliser with pesticides. Sluggish lupins: there are quite a few paddocks of lupins that got 5mm rain on them 2 weeks prior to the opening rain, that has caused a loss in vigour and plant numbers. Be mindful that crop competition plays a big part in weed control in lupins. Low vigour crops may need additional attention and possibly second sprays for weeds. Monitor closely. Aphid Antifeed: we often see an influx of aphids in August as temps start to warm up. Adding 200ml of Alphacypermethrin or 12-15ml Trojan to the last spray over the paddock can provide handy protection against aphids. Manganese Sprays : light land lupin growers should be planning to foliar spray Manganese onto 2019 seed paddocks when the pods on the primary stem are 10-15mm in length. With our higher yielding varieties and ever increasing use of limesand, Manganese rich seed is more important than ever. Spray grade Manganese Sulphate is the most cost effective option, and there are also numerous Mn liquid foliar products available. Fungicide in wheat: There are numerous options available now , ranging from Tebuconazole at $2-4/ha, propiconazole @ $3-6/ha, epoxiconazole @ $4-8/ha and Prosaro and Amistar extra at $12-24/ha. With fungicides, you get what you pay for. Proactive use of fungicide is always best, ie. get fungicide in the crop prior to disease ramping up rather than fighting off disease after the fact. Talk to your Agronomist about the best strategy, active and formulation to suit your situation.
