25.01.2022 DO YOU HAVE FOOT PAIN? PART 2 Try this exercise to help retrain your intrinsic foot muscles SWITCHING: Keep your big toe planted on the ground while you lift up your other four toes. Lower these toes back down, and keep them planted while you lift up your big toe. Continue for 30 seconds to 1 minute. This is a coordination exercise, and helps to build the connection between the brain and the foot muscles. Many people find this exercise very challenging, so don't be discouraged if you can't do it from the very first go.

24.01.2022 Hi everyone! We will be CLOSED tomorrow for ANZAC Day, but back into the swing of things again on Friday. There are only a couple of appointments still available on Friday. So if you need to see one of our physios before the end of the week, you'd best get in quickly!

23.01.2022 HOW STRONG IS YOUR CORE? Most people think of the abs when the word "core" is mentioned, but the abs are actually only one component of the system. The core, in essence, is a cylinder created by the muscles of the trunk: the back muscles (low back extensors), the front muscles (abdominals), the side muscles (obliques), the pelvic floor (base) and the diaphragm (top). Following injury (e.g. low back pain/injury), it is especially important to get these muscular component...s working well together again. In the clinic, these are some of the exercise tests we use to ASSESS CORE STRENGTH. We will then tailor a specific exercise program for you based on your areas of weakness, your injury/pain and your goals. (Please stop immediately if you experience any pain or discomfort while completing any exercises on this page, and consult your treating practitioner.) See more

23.01.2022 Do you need a last minute physio appointment?? We are here to help.

21.01.2022 THE BRIDGE: Part 1 Do you have low back pain or hip pain? The glute bridge is often a great starting point for strengthening the gluteal muscles and the low back extensors, in people with low back pain, hip tendinopathy and even hip OA. It is also a great exercise to start training hip stability in people with a range of other injuries/pains. Make sure to keep your hips elevated high and your pelvis level. So, how long can you hold it for?? Anywhere from 20 to 6...0 seconds is a good goal for a lot of people. Please stop doing the exercise if you experience pain or discomfort, and consult with your treating physiotherapist. See more

19.01.2022 CALF STRENTHENING PART 1: THE DOUBLE-LEG CALF RAISE A weak calf complex is often evident in cases of Achilles pain or tendinopathy, plantar fasciitis, foot pain and ankle pain. Our calves need to be strong and function well in order to propel us forward during walking and, especially, running. (This is what we call "push off".) The double leg calf raise is, in many cases, a great exercise to start strengthening this complex. Remember the slower the better, and make sure to keep you heels in a straight line during the up and down motion. (Always remember to stop if you experience pain during any exercise, and consult with your treating clinician.)

18.01.2022 DO YOU HAVE FOOT PAIN? PART 1 Try this exercise to help retrain your intrinsic foot muscles ARCHING: Keep your heel and the ball of your big toe grounded. Draw the ball of your big to back toward your heel, so that the space between the floor and the arch of your foot lengthens. Hold for a 3-5 seconds. (Ideally, you don't want your toes to curl while you are doing this. Although it is okay for your toes to curl to begin with, while your muscles become habituated to the exercise.) Progressions: Maintaining the arch during stepping through and walking.

15.01.2022 Check out this post from the Australian Physiotherapy Association about the importance of keeping our backs strong! Strengthening is important for improving the load tolerance of backs and our bodies as a whole - a concept we apply to rehabilitation after a low back injury or gradual-onset low back pain, and also prevention of re-injury.

13.01.2022 Great post from @thebarefootpodiatrist. We often forget about the muscles of our feet We are so accustomed to wearing shoes, where our feet don't have to work to navigate a varied environment and lack sensory input. It is important to ensure that these muscles are working well and working together, to support the body during movement. Retraining these muscles is often an important aspect of rehab for foot pain and other lower limb injuries.

08.01.2022 THE BRIDGE: Part 2 Are you down the track from a back injury, and need to STRENGTHEN YOUR LOW BACK? The elevated straight-leg bridge is a great go-to exercise, to challenge the endurance of the lumbar extensors and get them firing again! The higher you lift your hips, the harder it is Again, holding for anywhere from 20 to 60 seconds is a good goal for a lot of people. Also a great one for rehabbing a HAMSTRING STRAIN when introduced at an appropriate time. ... Please stop doing the exercise if you experience pain or discomfort, and consult with your treating physiotherapist. See more

07.01.2022 Let's talk about VERTIGO... Did you know that it can be treated in most people? All of our physiotherapists at Total Care in Tamworth and Quirindi are trained to identify and manage BPPV, which is the most common cause of vertigo.

07.01.2022 CALF STRENTHENING PART 2: THE SINGLE-LEG CALF RAISE The single-leg calf raise is a progression of the double-leg variation. This exercise is often important in mid-to-later stage rehab for Achilles tendinopathy, plantar fasciopathy, ankle sprains and more. As with the double-leg variation, remember to go slow and try to weight-bear through the balls of your feet (not your big toe). A study by Herbert-Losier and colleagues in 2017 looked at the average number of single-leg calf raises performed by adults of varying ages and found that, on average, men can do 24 repetitions and women can do 21 repetitions. (Remember to stop any exercise if it is giving you pain, and consult with your treating clinician.)

06.01.2022 Do you know that we stock ARCHIES thongs? ARCHIES are physiotherapist-designed thongs that provide support, comfort and cushioning for your arch, similar to an off-the-shelf orthotic. They can be very helpful for people with foot pain, heel pain, plantar fasciitis, and much more. Come in to our clinic at 33 Darling Street to get your pair today, for just $35!
