24.01.2022 Are you (or someone you know) suffering from pain around the outside and black of your foot? It may be Peroneal Tendonitis! Read on to find out more about this common condition... WHAT IS IT? Peroneal tendonitis is a common cause of pain around the back and outside of the foot due to inflammation of the peroneal tendons (peroneus longus and peroneus brevis). It develops when there is an increased load and overuse of the tendons, leading to them rubbing on the bone. It is ...particularly common in athletes and especially runners. WHAT CAUSES IT? People who take part in a sport that involves repetitive ankle motion are most prone to peroneal tendonitis. Factors that can contribute to peroneal tendonitis include: overuse, a sudden increase in training, improper training techniques, inadequate or unsupportive footwear, muscular imbalances. WHAT IS THE TREATMENT? As overuse is the primary cause of peroneal tendonitis, rest is crucial to help it heal. The individual should avoid playing sport, walking or any other activities that may aggravate the injury until the pain has gone. The area needs time to recover and, in time, the pain will lessen. Other common treatment options include: immobilisation (using a boot or support), anti-inflammatory medication, regular icing, and ankle bracing. If you or someone you know may be suffering from this condition, book into see one of our expert podiatrists today! http://totalsportspodiatry.com.au/book-online/ See more

21.01.2022 Does your child suffer from heel pain ? It might be Sever's Disease! Read on to find more about this condition and how to manage it. WHAT IS IT? Sever's disease (also known as calcaneal apophysitis) is a type of bone injury in which the growth plate in the lower back of the heel becomes inflamed and causes pain. Sever’s disease is the most common cause of heel pain in children, especially those who exercise or play sports on a regular basis. ... WHAT CAUSES IT? Sever's disease occurs as a result of repetitive stress on the Achilles tendon. Over time, this constant pressure can damage the growth plate, causing pain and inflammation. Sever’s disease is most likely to occur during the growth spurt that occurs in adolescence. For girls, growth spurts usually occurs between 8 and 13 years of age. For boys, it’s typically between 10 and 15 years of age. WHAT IS THE TREATMENT? The primary method for treating Sever's disease is to take time off from sport. This alleviates the pressure on the heel bone and allows it to heal naturally. Depending on the severity of your condition, other treatment options may be suggested such as regular icing, shoe inserts, pain medication and potentially orthotics to help treat biomechanical abnormalities which may be worsening your condition. If you or someone you know thinks they may have Sever's Disease, make sure to book in an appointment with one of our expert podiatrists via our website (http://totalsportspodiatry.com.au/book-online/). We can help diagnose if this really is the case, and get you on the road to recovery! See more

14.01.2022 Good running form is essential to prevent injuries. Although there is no perfect way to run it is important to have your biomechanics assessed by a professional Podiatrist. WHY IS FORM SO IMPORTANT? As we run, roughly 3-4 times your body weight is transferred through the body with every stride. These forces add up over a long run, and if not being absorbed correctly can cause injury. This is why correct technique is essential. There is no perfect technique that works for... everyone and that is why having an assessment is so important. HOW DO YOU FIX FORM? During a biomechanics assessment, your podiatrist will assess your body posture, foot strike, body lean and cadence. Then we will provide you with some tips as well as demonstrating certain exercises that can help your running technique. 10.01.2022 What is pronation, why does it occur and how do you treat it? Read on to find out! WHAT IS IT? Pronation is a natural movement of the foot that occurs during foot landing while running or walking. Over-pronation, however, means that as you walk, your foot rolls abnormally inwards and your arch tends to flatten out. This is more commonly known as flat feet. ... HOW DID I GET IT? The causes of abnormal pronation are largely due to structural anomalies that we are born with. For example, this may be because your arch is too high or your leg lengths arent quite even. But it can also result from injury or overuse. Overpronation may also result from obesity or pregnancy. WHAT IS THE TREATMENT? There are multiple treatment methods including choosing supportive shoes, wearing custom orthotics and doing exercises that strengthen the arches and muscles around them. If you think you may have over-pronated feet, it is important to be proactive, and seek treatment before injuries occur. 10.01.2022 Let's talk about ankle sprains! Ankle sprains are one of the most common sports injuries, especially in sports like Netball, Basketball and Football. A sudden ...twist or movement in which the foot rolls inwards or outwards can overstretch the supporting ligaments causing them to tear (see image below). Some people are more prone to recurring ankle sprains and have a higher incidence of injury. This can be caused by multiple factors and it's important that these are identified and managed to reduce the likelihood of re-injury! These factors include: - Poor rehabilitation of a previous ankle sprain - Poor foot posture (i.e. if you walk/run on the outside of your feet) - High arch & flat feet - Inadequate conditioning - Excess body weight Luckily there are many ways to reduce your risk of re-injury! Management options may include: - strength and conditioning exercises such as calf raises, single-leg exercises, hopping/bounding + more - wearing supportive shoes appropriate to your sport - correcting foot posture - using ankle braces or tape If you feel you are prone to sprains and want some help with preventing recurring sprains please book in to see us at Total Sports Podiatry today! http://totalsportspodiatry.com.au/book-online/

10.01.2022 Have you or someone you know been experiencing pain in your big toe? It may be inflamed Sesamoids! WHAT IS IT? Sesamoiditis is pain in the ball of the 1st Metatarsal Phalangeal Joint, AKA the base of your big toe. The pain is a result of inflammation of the Sesamoids which are small bones located within the Flexor Tendon. ... HOW DID I GET IT? Sports that increase pressure on the ball of the foot, such as running, basketball, AFL, tennis, and ballet are more likely to cause injury to the Sesamoids due to repetitive loading and overuse. Acute injuries such as landing, jumping or twisting on the forefoot may also create Sesamoiditis issues. HOW DOES IT FEEL? Injuries to the sesamoids region of the foot are quite painful when weight is put through the ball of the foot. To compensate for the weight-bearing pain, patients often will walk on the outside of their foot. If the pain is of an inflammatory nature, the pain may warm up during the day, however, if the pain is due to a fracture of the sesamoid bone, it will not warm up and improve. WHAT DO I DO TO FIX IT? Sesamoiditis can have a poor prognosis (possibly requiring surgery) if poorly managed in the early stages. Early diagnosis and treatment will improve your chance of a full recovery without surgical intervention. Book in now for a thorough assessment and treatment plan by one of our experienced podiatrists. You can book an appointment on our website http://totalsportspodiatry.com.au/book-online/ or by calling 03 5221 8822. See more

They provide additional support and cushioning in key areas of the feet, such as the arch, heel and ball of the foot. ... DO I NEED THEM? Orthotics are used to treat a range of foot and leg issues such as flat feet, calf pain, ankle pain, knee pain, and even lower back pain. However, there are other treatments available for these conditions, so your Podiatrist will assess your feet and determine if orthotics are required. HOW DO I GET THEM? Book an appointment online at http://totalsportspodiatry.com.au/book-online/ or call 03 5221 8822 and we will assess your feet. If you do need orthotics, we will take a mould of your foot, and use 3D modelling to create a custom shoe insert. Once the orthotic is ready, we will call you back in to check the fit. See more

09.01.2022 BAREFOOT RUNNING Is it right for you? Are there really any benefits to this running trend? Read on to find out! POSITIVES - Strengthens intrinsic muscles of the feet, improving foot posture - Improved proprioception reduces the incidence of ankle sprains amongst runners ... - Produces a more economical and natural running style for athletes, thus reducing energy expenditure NEGATIVES - Without the shoe there to absorb it, increased ground reaction forces run through the body. This can overload the bones and soft tissues, causing problems like stress fractures, plantar fascia and Achilles tendon issues. - Blisters and calluses are more likely to occur as there is no cushioning to support your soft skin. WHAT SHOULD I DO? - Take your time and build up gradually. Similar to training with weights, you cant go from 0 to 100 overnight. - Listen to your body. Barefoot running may be natural, however, it is foreign to your muscles and joints so listen to aches and pains and seek advice before continuing - Barefoot running is not for everyone! If you have any queries, talk to your Podiatrist at your next appointment! You can book an appointment via our website (http://totalsportspodiatry.com.au/) or by calling 03 5221 8822. See more
