25.01.2022 Did you get caught by the Telstra internet outage today? None of our clients did. Contact us so we can help your business address this issue!

23.01.2022 Agent Smith has infected millions of Mobile Phones worldwide! DO NOT install Mobile Phone Apps that are not from the Store. Android devices are being infected when the user installs an app, often a game app from a third-party site, which contains malicious software (malware). https://www.staysmartonline.gov.au//agent-smith-malware-in

23.01.2022 With Microsoft's Patch Tuesday being TODAY, take a few moments right now to make sure you've hit the pause button in Windows Update. Better yet, if you have Win10 Pro, Education, or Enterprise, set up and/or confirm the more persistent patch-deferring options in the advanced settings. I recommend waiting till next month or even November before installing Microsoft's latest of Windows 10 version 2004 as it is likely to have a big bunch of patches this month, which suggests the new release is still a work in progress. Meanwhile, make sure you don't get caught unaware. Step-by-step details in this Computerworld article. https://www.computerworld.com//with-patch-tuesday-near-get

22.01.2022 Still on Windows 7 and getting the Upgrade Nag message? Check the Do not remind me again box and it will go away! If you have questions about Windows 7 support, click on the messenger icon.

22.01.2022 Most of our clients have their own COVID-19 protocols, including gloves and masks. We also take paperwork that confirms we have not been in contact with anybody that has been infected or even showing signs of infection for the past 14 days. We are also getting the tracing APP as soon as it is available as we want to know if anyone we have been near had been infected! We are going to make use of the tracing APP a requirement for any client we have to go on-site for!

22.01.2022 Would you open this message, or worse yet click on the link to purportedly open the One Drive Document? It is obvious to the trained person this is not just SPAM, but probably malicious. The spelling errors are the first giveaway. Many people get caught by the I before E except after c, but it is a rule that has many exceptions. that its weird, albeit I'll forfeit to the glacier, The other one here is the that "You have Received a New Document via OneDrivet". Note the t at ...the end of One Drive! also if you are on a computer, rather than a phone or tablet, you can hover your mouse over the link and see that it is going to a 3rd party, http://dogboardingkennels.ca, who is actually the unwitting host of this malicious document. Even if those issues were not there, you should NEVER click on a link in a message unless you know that it is legitimate. If the link takes you to a strange website, close it down IMMEDIATELY and check with your IT Support person at Total Understanding IT what you should do from there. The first thing we would suggest is disconnecting from any network. DO NOT keep your e-mail client open. Close any browser windows or other applications and run a full virus scan, particularly if you downloaded the linked document. These days that even applies to Phones and Tablets as have become the favorite target of hackers as most people don't have any malware protection on their phone or tablet. To verify if a message may be legitimate: Have you done business with Unsplash before and received messages from their [email protected] mailbox? Yes - Contact them as they may have been hacked! No - just mark the message as SPAM, delete it and move on. Unfortunately, the mail server used by unsplash.com allows spoofing of their mailboxes even though the delivery mailbox actually exists and you might have received messages from that person previously. However in this case the header confirms that the message is not legitimate as the sending address is VIA a .onmicrosoft.com which should always raise flags, as NO well-configured e-mail domain should utilise this address formatting! Another flag is that the message is sent To: a dodgy mailbox address such as [email protected], with you like the CC to the message. DO NOT click on links in messages, unless you know it is from a trusted source! Do Not open links to documents, unless you are expecting a document from that source. See more

20.01.2022 Did you know there are two types of organisation in Australia that can SPAM to you, even if you try to opt-out! Charities and Political Parties are exempt from the Do Not Call register and they do not have to provide unsubscribe information on e-mails that they send! With the Queensland elections coming up you have probably received an unsolicited e-mail regarding registering for postal voting from your local member. They obtained this information from the AEC as you've use...d the AEC website to change your voter registration at some stage. I'd recommend against clicking on the link as they are likely to be using the email to validate this information and register you in their parties marketing database! You can still make your vote count and avoid the situation that COVID restrictions might put on attendance at your local polling place as anyone can register for a General Postal Vote at https://formupload.aec.gov.au/Form?FormId=GPV. By doing this you will receive a postal vote application and can safely ignore the marketing messages from the political parties!

19.01.2022 Still on Windows 7? DON'T PANIC! Microsoft will release the LAST security updates for Windows 7 this Tuesday 14Jan2020 but you DO NOT have to upgrade Windows or even get a new computer just yet! However, you should install any outstanding updates NOW!

18.01.2022 Cloud providers are always competing for your business. Microsoft has now added the ability to schedule meetings to the FREE version of Teams at https://teams.microsoft.com/ to compete with Zoom and Google Meet. The advantage with Teams is that its platform is compatible with Google Meet, so you can schedule a meeting on Teams and a person can connect to your meeting from Google Meet.

17.01.2022 Do you know what to do when excreta hits the fan? The Australian Cybercrime Security Centre reports an incident occurring every 10 minutes with an average of 6 incidents a day requiring their intervention. Message TUIT for help stopping the black hats getting to your data or holding you to ransom. https://www.technologydecisions.com.au//acsc-receives-one-

16.01.2022 Backup and Disaster Recovery While they definitely work together to provide data protection, backup and disaster recovery (DR) are not the same thing. A number of people, especially in smaller and medium-sized businesses, mistakenly think that just doing backups is enough to cover their DR requirements. They think that just doing backups is all the protection that they need from disasters. The importance of backups cannot be overstated and they do constitute the foundation fo...Continue reading

14.01.2022 Microsoft Office is cheaper by subscription! Microsoft Office is still available the way you’ve purchased it in the past. Whether you want to buy the Professional or the Home and Student edition, you can spend a few hundred dollars and buy one copy. Instead of a literal box, it’ll more likely be a download, but it’s still a one-time purchase licensed to run on one computer. No one is forcing you to change. But you might want to think about it.... If you buy an annual subscription to Office 365 Home you get licenses for up to 6 computers, phones or tablets from somewhere like Officeworks, for $109. Works out to less than $20 per device per year. The box product from the same source is $188 for the Student Edition, which does not include Outlook or Access. The Home and Business box product is $345 and only provides access to the same products as the Home subscription. There is also Office 365 Personal for a single user for $98, but for $11 more you get 5 more licenses! With the Office 365 Home subscription, you also get up to 1Tb of storage on One Drive per user, but you DO NOT get mailbox hosting! I'll talk about Office 365 Business subscriptions in my next post.

14.01.2022 I've just received a message to say my e-mail account has been hacked. What do I do? Mark the message as SPAM and DELETE IT! This is confirmed by the advice posted by one of my favourite IT bloggers, Leo Notenboom. While you are there, sign up to his weekly posts as they are really useful, even for the less technically minded. https://askleo.com/has-a-hacker-really-hacked-my-email-ac/

14.01.2022 I don't recommend upgrading just yet to the 2004 update of Windows 10 as Microsoft has just distributed an "optional" batch of over 70 bug fixes for the OS. Once those patches have been thoroughly digested and the inevitable screams of pain subside, we'll reconsider moving to 2004 maybe. In the interim, keep your Windows PC fully updated. There are a few known problems, but they're mostly well-documented and fairly easily fixed, should you run afoul of the patching gremlins.

12.01.2022 5 Signs Your Email Was Hacked and What to Do About It In many ways, your email account is the digital equivalent of your house address. You give it to people and businesses, so they know where to send the products and helpful information you requested. It offers a way to keep in touch with family and friends. But email addresses have evolved to be so much more than just an inbox. When you sign up for something that requires an email address, you’re essentially using it as...Continue reading

07.01.2022 Just got a call from Medicare because of the virus they were asking to update my details so I will get the $750 government payment. Please do not tell anyone ...your name or any other information. If it was Medicare they would be able to tell me what my name is. Medicare do not ring you, and you don’t need to do anything to get government funds. Disgusting scammers at work again See more

05.01.2022 How Long Should a Password Be? For a long time, the common thinking was that the best, most practical passwords consisted of a random combination of upper and lower-case letters, numbers, and a special character or two. If so composed, password length needed to be only eight characters. Randomness remains important, but as it turns out, size matters more. Much more....Continue reading

04.01.2022 Microsoft's November patches have passed muster you should allow Windows to update within the next few days. Those patches didn't fix anything all that critical no big associated security threats appeared out of the sky. But in the normal course of events, you want to keep your copy of Windows fully updated. Now's a good time to get caught up. There's only one big bug in the November updates the Office security patches (all versions!) can cause the Access database app t...o throw completely bogus "Query is corrupt" error messages. If you install the patches and Access suddenly has conniption fits, you need to manually download and install the fix. (Follow the Computerworld link below.) Those of you still running older releases of Win10 Home should move quickly to Versions 1903 or 1909. You'll find more details and step-by-step instructions for all these issues and others in this Computerworld article. https://www.computerworld.com//all-s-clear-to-install-micr See more

If you don't want your kids staring at a loading bar till Boxing day open up the box and set it up now. ... Best of luck and Merry Christmas!!

01.01.2022 I've been informed that a website I use had a data breach. What Should I do? This happens to me from time to time as well. I want to be clear: Normally, this does not mean your accounts have actually been broken into. However, depending on the specifics of the breach and your own security habits, it could mean your account is at risk. Your initial response should be to change passwords....Continue reading
