08.01.2022 Last month at the Tottenham Hospital Auxiliary Flower Show, the historical society displayed the 1925 bottle time capsule that was stored in the pedestal that displayed the German Gun given to the town in 1925 to commemorate World War I. The gun was originally displayed in the first park at the northern end of Bulbodney Street. In the 1950s a new park was created where it is now, next to the Tottenham Hall. The gun was transferred to the new park and the pedestal left behind in the old park. Towards the turn of the century, the late Alan Hudson recalled there was a time capsule laid in the pedestal in the old park and with the help of the Shire, the bottle capsule was found. It was decided to open the capsule at the turn of the century celebrations to be held at the hall.

08.01.2022 This is the photo of Kearneys Miners Arms Hotel, given by the Hudson Family. There is no date given but feel it was very early days after it was reportedly moved in from Lansdale by Chris Kearney. By early records this hotel was one of the first buildings in the newly proclaimed village in 1907. The photo taken in June 1925 seems to have had an extension added on the right of the photo. Unfortunately it burnt down 3/4/1930, as written on Phil Harveys photo.

07.01.2022 Some photos of the Millenium celebrations at the turn of the century. There was a street parade with various organisation floats and stage segments depicting entertainment of each decade.

03.01.2022 A Short History of the Kennedy Tree On Anzac Day afternoon Tottenham Historical Society members visited the Mine Tank, Leg O Mutton, a marked tree (portion number carved in) and the Kennedy Tree. The main aim of the afternoon excursion was to inspect the Kennedy Tree for possible inclusion on the Heritage Tree Register. It is a significant living link with Tottenhams early history as Roland (Roley) Kennedy found guilty of the murder of Constable George Duncan carved his... name in the trunk of the tree while cutting kurrajong for his mothers cow. Roley was a member of the very militant and radical organisation Industrial Workers of the World known as the Wobblies who were active in Tottenham in the years preceding and during WWI. Roley began working in the local mines in 1907, aged 12. He also worked for a short time on the Tottenham railway line. He was a member of Tottenhams Brass Band, playing the tenor horn. When he was 15, he became politically involved with the IWW and when the Tottenham Chapter was officially formed in May, 1915, he was one of the three most enthusiastic members. Among the IWWs reputed activities was the attempted disruption of the railway line and the also attempted blowing up of the Mt. Royal Mine. At the time Tottenham was an unruly mining town with a large male itinerant population and a reputation for disorderly conduct. 27 year old Constable George Duncan arrived in 1916 as Tottenhams first resident police officer. Previously the police officer serving Tottenham was based at Dandaloo, the major town. Constable Duncan was reportedly sent to clean up the town. He proceeded to crack down, especially on IWW members, making arrests and trying to issue Roley with a summons. Some IWW members decided he had to go, this included Roley. On 26th September, 1916, Constable Duncan was shot through the police hut window somewhere in Merilba Street and died shortly afterwards. Frank Franz and Roley Kennedy were arrested and charged with murder, as was Michael (Herb) Kennedy. All three were committed to trial. The trial of Frank and Roley lasted one day only, 16th October, 1916 with both being found guilty. Herb Kennedys trial was four days later with the jury being directed to find him not guilty. Roley and Frank were hanged at Bathurst Gaol in December, 1916. Roley was 20 years old. Story written by Jenny Day, member of the Tottenham Historical Society Inc. See more
