12.01.2022 NEW-LOOK COPETON DAM NORTHERN FORESHORE RE-OPENS FOR CHRISTMAS Campers spending this Christmas on the Northern Foreshore of Copeton Dam will be among ...the first to experience the new viewing platforms, footpaths and amenities block, as work roars ahead on the $5.7 million tourism development. Recently I joined Inverell Shire Mayor Paul Harmon and Northern Foreshores caretaker Tom Stapleton to inspect progress on the project, which is due for completion early next year. In the space of 12 months Northern Foreshores Copeton Dam has transformed from a comfortable camping getaway to a luxury outdoor escape. The new amenities block, which is twice the size of the original, is equipped with showers, toilets and disabled access and is now ready for visitors to enjoy. 2.4km of shared footpaths now snake their way around the park, connecting the camp ground to a number of new viewing platforms that overlook the dam. Last week, the floating pontoon was installed ag the bottom the 440m concrete boat ramp (the longest in the Southern Hemisphere), enabling boaters to safely enter and exit boats from the waters edge. Progress on the communal hall is going well, with the frame for the 100-person venue taking shape. Children will be excited to know the next cab off the rank is the splash-pool, which will provide relief from Inverell’s notoriously hot summers. The new playground is still cordoned off, but once soft-fall is put down it to will be open. Every stage of this project has been designed to allow access for all and I the tourism opportunities it presents will inject millions of extra dollars into the local economy each year, helping it to rebuild after years of drought and the pandemic. 08.01.2022 Posted @withregram @adammarshallmp MAJOR RENOVATIONS FOR GILGAI WAR MEMORIAL WITH $10,000 FUNDING The 97-year-old #Gilgai War Memorial will undergo significant restoration works next year, after it was confirmed yesterday the monument would receive $10,000 from the State Government’s Community War Memorials Fund. The Memorial takes pride of place in the centre of the village and bares the names of local fallen soldiers from the First and Second World Wars and plaque...s for the National Service, Korea, Malaysia, Vietnam and the Boer Wars. In preparation for the 100th anniversary of the installation of the memorial, in 2023, the Gilgai Crown Land Board have put forward a comprehensive plan to completely restore the monument to its former glory. Utilising the expertise of International Conservation Services, vegetation will be removed from the joints and lichen washed away from the polished granite surface. Gilding and plaques on the memorial will be hand cleaned and the concrete surrounds will be repainted and a metal hook will be treated for corrosion. I’m really pleased and proud this memorial will be restored to look as good as the day it was first unveiled, almost 100 years ago! For other groups looking to retire their local war memeorial, applications are now open for the latest round of the Community War Memorials Fund. Works funded through this program include conservation assessments, honour roll repair, war memorial cleaning and conservation work, arborist advice for war memorial trees, security measures for memorials, repairs to war memorial halls and improvements to the accessibility of memorials. Applications are now open and close at 5pm on 11 February 2021.
