06.01.2022 A note from Darcy: Yesterday was International Womens Day. But rather than make a post yesterday, I want to make a post today, outside of IWD, to show my support for all women, around the world, on a daily basis. Mothers, sisters, nurses, teachers and everything else you are all strong people and you deserve all the support you need. A special shoutout to the women in the entertainment industry. It is an incredibly tough industry to be in, and collectively we need to make su...re we are supporting each other, no matter what your identity is or what area you work in. There are associations to help out in times of need. Entertainment Assist is one amazing organisation that is specific to those who are in this industry. But dont forget - there are other people you can reach out to as well, such as Lifeline. A survey, of some 2900 people working in the industry in Victoria alone was conducted by Entertainment Assist in 2016 and the results were astonishing. The results showed that people in the entertainment industry were 7 times more likely to consider taking their own life. Thats 7 times more likely than the general population. 7 times. And road crew where 9 times. The rate of attempted suicide was double the rate of the general population. So I urge you, if mental health is a problem for you, please take the steps and get help. Women in the industry are much more susceptible to sexual harassment and intimidation from colleagues, and that is just not okay. To make a more balanced industry, we need to nurture a culture of equality and respect. Jessica McCloughan, a production technician in Australia has taken steps to fix the issue. Jess has founded Tech Sisters International, a Facebook group for the women in the entertainment industry to connect, network, support and discuss tech knowledge, wages, industry guidelines and other topics related to the industry. Shout out to Jess for taking the steps - you have my full support. One more shout out needs to go to my Mother (and father, but he isnt a woman) who has supported me from day one of wanting to work in this industry. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you.
