12.01.2022 Looking out for the Jonesy report hear it is: THIS YEARS TOUR OF THE TR0PICS had the value added interest of 12 promising riders from the ARA PRO RACING SUNSHINE COAST team, under the guidance of legendary Australian cycling champion, Henk vogels. thus making a field of 22 as they topped the green Hill rise to commence lap one. Henk had split his crew into two separate teams. Team 1 the Russell Green, in Black and Yellow and Team 2 ARA PRO RACING adorned in teal. Through the... 7.25 klm on the opening lap pretty much altogether as all 22 feeling their way across the picturesque backdrop of the Great Divide. However swinging off the Yarrabah Road Matthew Rice and teammate Cameron Scott had pinched a handy break of around a minute thirty with Local riders Thomas Beddome. Luke Azzopardi, Tom Cook and Brian Nesbit leading the rest. Whilst many in the crowd were waiting an extended move from behind the leading duo, for the next several laps Scott and Matt Rice continued to draw away from the 20 riders following which included Matt’s brother Michael. Through laps 5 and 6 Taj Jones clocked up the fastest laps as Jones went out after tearaway’s leaving himself in NO Man’s land in a bold attempt to cross. Top rides chasing from Allister Donahue, Armani Drake and Daniel Di Domenico kept many intrigued as to who may set out to assist Taj Jones, this was a tough effort from Taj as Scott and Rice just kept the hammer down MILE FOR MILE on their 92 klm journey and they appeared to have the race at their mercy slipping over rise to accept the bell. Cameron Scott now made an effort to dislodge his teammate and slipped a few seconds over the Hill. However their lead was being usurped by strong riding from Zac Gilmore, Allister Donahue, Ryan Thomas and Ben Lawes with the latter riding a big race to keep the Sunny Coast boys honest. This group were able to slide past Jones and then Matt Rice whose effort was nothing short of outstanding. However, could they reel the flying Scott. Second by second Thomas, Gilmore, Donahue and Lawes WERE gaining, and with the crowd straining to see Scott reach the foot of the Hill, it was obvious Cameron Scott was going to take stage one, his margin being whittled to 14 seconds as Cameron crossed the line in front of Ryan Thomas, Zac Gilmore, Allister Donahue and Ben Lawes. This being a brilliant ride by Cameron who heads the leader board going into tomorrow’s Criterium.
