24.01.2022 Trainer in Focus: John Eggenhuizen Owner of Getabout Training Services & Tow-Ed. John joined the Royal Australian Navy in 1975 and served 20 years as a Mine warfare and Precise Navigation specialist. Setting up precise Navigation systems around the coastal areas of Australia for ships operating at sea, he often had to drive 4WD vehicles into remote coastal areas in search of suitable sites to set up the Nav equipment.... John did his first 4WD course in 1985 and instantly became hooked on idea of travelling around the country in a 4WD. When he isn't travelling, he was based in the Mine warfare school teaching both officers and sailors. John has been teaching a variety of subjects since 1983, including seamanship, boat handling, demolitions, Mine Warfare, and navigation systems. After leaving the navy in 1995, John & his wife set up Getabout 4WD Adventures as a Registered Training Organistion (RTO 90457) and began both teaching 4WDing and leading 4WD tag along tours. They have been doing so ever since. Along the way, John has conducted numerous vehicle launches for different vehicle manufacturers, and led a number of 4WD expeditions throughout Australia, including several for Australian Geopgraphic. John qualified as a Lead Instructor for Land Rover Experience in 2013 and because of his 4WD and teaching backgrounds, John became one of 4 Global Lead instructors for Land Rover Experience in 2015. This has given him the opportunity to conduct training overseas, with regular visits to China (teaching new lead instructors), Dubai (teaching sand driving), and Europe. In 2005, John, along with one of my key instructors; developed a towing course for both on road and off road towing. John & his wife then created Tow-Ed, a company dedicated to teaching all aspects of towing. Both Getabout and Tow-Ed now provide nationally recognised training in all states of Australia. John is regularly called upon to conduct seminars on both 4WD and towing subjects. He consults to the RMS in NSW on towing matters and has been called as an expert witness in several 4WD and towing cases. John is extremely proud of the team he has, and what they have been able to achieve with both Getabout and Tow-Ed. After 35 years, John still thoroughly enjoys what he does, and continues to encourage his team to strive for excellence in everything they approach.
