24.01.2022 #FeralFriday Our Biosecurity Officers coordinate various group programs across the Central Tablelands in autumn and spring. Coordinated group control programs a...re the most effective method of controlling pest animals across the landscape and all landholders are encouraged to participate. Is your chemical accreditation up to date for spring baiting? Weve got a couple of FREE Vertebrate Pesticide Training courses coming up. On successful completion of the course, participants receive a 5-year accreditation to use vertebrate pesticides. 23.01.2022 Make silage while the sun shines! This old lucerne paddock, now dominated by annual grass weeds such as barley grass and black oats, was cut today for silage wi...th the farmer taking the opportunity to conserve fodder. Given the wet forecast, there may be very few opportunities to cut and bale fodder (silage or hay) this spring, so waiting for quantity may be risky. If quality and yield is good, the cost of making silage should be very affordable and an excellent risk management tool for future dry periods. Weve got a couple of on-farm talks happening next week that talk about your options - graze, silage, hay or grain. Click here for more info - https://bit.ly/3b81vXe

21.01.2022 Time to check your legume nodules! Spring is the time to examine pasture legume nodules. This means checking the number of nodules on the roots of the legume ...plants and also the colour inside the nodules. Legume roots house symbiotic nitrogen-fixing bacteria called rhizobia which provide nitrogen to the plant and later to the pasture grasses and other non-leguminous pasture species. Clare Edwards, one of our Pasture Officers, has some easy steps to help you check your nodules: 1. Carefully dig up 1012 legumes from different parts of a pasture paddock (preferably all the same type, eg sub clover - pictured). 2. Carefully wash the roots to remove the soil. In clay-based soils, you may need to soak them for a while in a bucket. 3. Inspect the nodules and count them while noting their size and location on the roots. A good number is 20 40 nodules. 4. Cut open several nodules and inspect their colour. Ideally, they should be pink to red inside. If they are white or green, there may be no rhizobia or they might be ineffective. Read more about nodules here with this guide from Grains Research and Development Corporation - https://bit.ly/2R4yWR7

20.01.2022 #WeedWednesday Be on the lookout for new infestations of blue heliotrope in our region this summer. The bare ground from years of drought and in some areas rec...ent fire activity have provided ideal conditions for the spread and establishment of blue heliotrope across the Central Tablelands. Blue heliotrope (Heliotropium amplexicaule) is easily identified when flowering and has highly aromatic leaves. The long taproot of the plant (sometimes going down 2 metres into the soil profile) makes it difficult to control and extremely drought hardy. Blue heliotrope is a poisonous weed that can take over and become difficult to control in bushland, pasture and cropping situations. Early identification and control is critical to limit the spread of this weed in our region. It is unpalatable by stock, but if eaten it can cause liver damage, photosensitisation or even sudden death in pigs, horses, cattle, sheep and goats. In some areas of our region a biocontrol beetle has been released onto blue heliotrope which in favourable conditions can defoliate adult plants. Numbers of these biocontrol beetles are likely to have been reduced over the prolonged drought period and will require a few wet summers to build up in numbers again. 18.01.2022 Pasture day moth caterpillars spotted At this time each year, we often see giant hairy caterpillars on the surface of our pastures. These caterpillars are t...he native Pasture day moth larvae. It is considered a minor pasture pest. This dark brown hairy caterpillar with yellow and reddish-orange markings can grow up to 6cm long. It has two yellow spots near the end of its body. Once fully grown, they burrow into the soil in a vertical tunnel and pupate at the bottom. The Pasture day moth can be seen flying around during the day in autumn. It likes broadleaf plants (including storksbill and capeweed), sub clover and has been known to attack phalaris. Pictured is a Pasture day moth caterpillar recently spotted south of Bathurst.

15.01.2022 #WeedWednesday This year is looking to be a good year for the common weed Cape weed (Arctotheca calendula) - its soft rosette of leaves is easy to identify espe...cially with the contrasting lighter underside of the leaves. Its yellow flowers are a favourite for making daisy chains. Cape weed is an autumn-germinating annual plant which grows well in areas that were bare ground last autumn. Flowering occurs in late spring and early summer; the masses of yellow, daisy-like flowers with dark, almost black centres are conspicuous from a considerable distance. Cape weed dies off in late summer. It is reported that cape weed is readily eaten by stock and can provide reasonable nutrition. However, grazing of young, rapidly growing plants can cause nitrate poisoning. High intake by dairy cattle can taint milk.

08.01.2022 NSW health authorities have recorded just one coronavirus infection overnight in the 24 hours to 8:00pm last night. It is the lowest number of new cases since J...uly 2, when there were no new infections reported and on August 18, when there were only three. Today was also the first time since August 7 that infection figures did not include a case with an unknown source. The new case is a close contact of a previously reported case at Hornsby Hospital. "The case went into isolation before the commencement of their infectious period following notification of the previous Hornsby case," state medical officer Kerry Chant said. "While case numbers have remained low this week the virus continues to circulate in the community and vigilance must be maintained. "It is vital that high rates of testing continue in order to find the source of the cases still under investigation and to identify and stop further spread of the virus." There were 32,580 COVID-19 tests were conducted yesterday.
