25.01.2022 GREAT SOUTHERN NOONGAR ELDER APPLAUDS $1.3 BILLION NATIVE TITLE SETTLEMENT Albany-based Lester Coyne says he's pleased the historic deal will become a reality after a final hurdle was cleared in the High Court. The South West Native Title Settlement resolves all Native Title claims in a 200,000 sqm region of WA's south west and is worth an estimated $1.3 billion.... It's been described as the largest Native Title settlement in Australian history. Mr Coyne said an incorporated body would be established to distribute the funds, which would be spent in areas like housing, domestic issues and setting up Aboriginal businesses. He said the money would empower Noongars to determine their own future through local decision making. "It's a bit like someone who's living on a poor street and suddenly they win Lotto," he said. "Life changes for those people and hopefully wealthy people can become healthy people. "I'd like to see our people become healthy and wealthy...that could be mental health, community health...all manner of different things. "We want to see change." Via ABC Greath Southern

16.01.2022 When East Perth cafe owner Jules Aknin noticed an elderly man walking the streets on a chilly morning, he offered him a hot coffee and a toasted sandwich to warm him up. The pair became friends and over the next six weeks Jules began to realise just how much 84-year-old Shane was going without. That's when the community rallied together to help, donating a fridge for his tiny apartment and a much needed new jacket.

11.01.2022 A Christmas tree with a difference! What do you think of this? This 7-metre tree in Lismore, NSW, is entirely recycled. The tree itself is made from old 25-litre drums, while the bows and bonbons are made from chaff and feed bags. The Lismore City Council said this year’s tree is a nod to the rural community who endured bushfires, drought, floods and COVID-19 over the past year.... : via ABC North Coast

09.01.2022 Now that’s a wool coat! Baarack had 35kg of fleece shorn off this week! The wild sheep was found in Victoria and could barely see when they discovered him. Barrack had been owned at some point but his ear tag had been removed.... "(It) all goes to show what incredibly resilient and brave animals sheep really are, and we could not love them any more if we tried," said Kyle Behrend from Edgar’s Mission Farm Sanctuary. He’s now settling in with other rescued sheet at the mission. More here: https://ab.co/2Ph4fuB : Edgar's Mission

06.01.2022 "I have wrinkles. I have wrinkles because I had friends, we laugh, we laugh many times, even to tears, and then I met love, that made me squint my eyes with joy.... I have wrinkles because I had children, and I have cared for them since they were born, I smiled at all their new discoveries and spent nights waiting for them. I cried for the people I loved and people who left, for a while or forever, or those who left without me knowing why. I also spent hours without sleep with life projects, with children's fever, and not always with time to read a book. In every groove of my face and body, my story is hidden and the emotions that I experienced. Each experience is a part of my life, a heartbeat of my heart, it's the photo album of my most important memories." - Marinella Canu See more
