21.01.2022 The Town and Hassell were pleased to host senior heritage officers from the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage who took a tour of Edward Millen Park and viewed a presentation for the finalisation of the detailed design for the Edward Millen Landscape Masterplan. Once Council has approved the final detailed design, DPLH will need to approve the development application the Town will lodge. 16.01.2022 The beautiful Balga (Grass) and Moordja (Christmas) trees around our Town have existed on our landscape for tens of thousands of years. In Aboriginal culture, the Balga signifies a timeline of history as the trees tell a story of what's happened in the past. Meanwhile the beautiful yellow and orange flowering Moordja are an important way for past Elders to send messages on how to care for the land. Noongar Elder, Simon Forrest, invites us for a storytelling session to discover more on some of our older tree species in Town.

14.01.2022 UPDATE: power has returned and the library and Leisure centre are both operating as normal. ------- Our library and Leisure centre in East Vic Park are currently without power.... The Leisure gym and squash courts are closed. Junior netball games and casual basketball shooting are still going ahead at this stage, depending on light. The library is still open and accepting returns, however loans and PC access are unavailable. You can access WIFI, and people are welcome to come in and read. In Dementia Action Week, we learn a little awareness and support can make a lot of difference to those who need help, and our local police. So far this year within the Cannington District, there have been 7 instances of people with dementia going missing. On each occasion large scale searches involving up to 50 police and SES workers are deployed to ensure their safety. WA Police have some tips on how you can help. These tree wells are a new initiative to halve water use to establish trees and allow 50L of water to be held at the tree base. This year we continued our #GreeningVicPark initiatives through a number of Urban Forest program activities, planting 2,899 trees and 29,419 shrubs around the Town. The 2020 Urban Forest program planting season added 110,011m of projected canopy over to the Town, a 42% increase from 2019!
