14.01.2022 Our Principal Solicitor Bill Mitchell recently received an award from James Cook University Law as its first law graduate admitted as a solicitor. In an interview with the Townsville Bulletin, he said that helping vulnerable people was at the core of his work. Ive seen nearly 7000 people, and just seeing peoples everyday lives changed is the most rewarding. Working with young people that have been in institutional care and refugee law where youre seeing people settle into Australia has been profound.

14.01.2022 Happy International Day of Older Person. Today we celebrated the significant contribution Older Persons make to our community by flashmobbing Stockland Townsville Shopping Centre. See more on WIN News Townsville tonight at 6pm.

13.01.2022 We've helped many people with Centrelink robo-debts. The Australian Government has conceded in a Federal Court case that a key element of robo-debt was unlawful, and that means that many old robo-debts can be reviewed. Victoria Legal Aid have put together some great resources for affected clients - take a look at the infographic to see where you stand. Call us for an appointment in the New Year if you'd like our help.

Townsville Community Legal Service has been a leading human rights advocate throughout its history, so in many respects the new Human Rights Act is a continuation of our work. As a result of the commencement of the Human Rights Act, we have decided to better reflect our practice areas by renaming our General Se...rvice to the Human Rights and Civil Legal Service. We have always had a strong human rights focus, and this name puts human rights in focus as a core practice area. You can read more about the Queensland Human Rights Act at: https://www.qhrc.qld.gov.au/your-rights/human-rights-law.

03.01.2022 We have been keeping up with developments in the COVID-19 novel coronavirus pandemic and public health advice in recent days. Townsville Community Law has made the decision to temporarily stop offering face-to-face appointments from Monday 16 March 2020. We will continue to offer appointments by telephone. We will review this decision at the end of this week. If you already have a face-to-face appointment booked, we will contact you very soon to confirm a telephone appointme...nt. In addition to recent public health advice, we have decided to take this early action to protect a particularly vulnerable client group. Our Seniors Legal and Support Service assists older clients, many of whom have a range of health conditions and who would be most affected by COVID-19. We cannot place that group of clients at risk. We trust that all of our clients will understand. Our door will remain open to the public but we ask that you do not attend our office for non-essential reasons, or when a telephone call will suffice. If you are an existing client or have an urgent need to attend our office, please do not do so if you feel unwell or are experiencing flu-like symptoms. If you have recently visited our office and have left, or transited through mainland China, Iran, South Korea or Italy in the last 14 days, please let us know as soon as possible. Please call us on 4721 5511 if you have any questions.
