14.01.2022 I have always had a passion for history and when I was leaving the Department of Defence I started my courses in museum management. I started an Historical Soc...iety at Rollingstone and took on the Rollingstone Station Museum which had been set up by the Community Association. After refurbishment of the building with a Heritage Trails Grant and the re-organisation of displays, I managed the Museum for 10 years with assistance of volunteers. I also had Heritage signs installed in Rollingstone and Balgal Beach, covering the history of the area from 1884. Unfortunately, this Museum closed in 2010 due to lack of support. Townsville Museum and Historical Society has been operating since 1985 and we are the only history Museum that showcases Townsville’s history. The history started in 1864 with the founding of Townsville and the Museum highlights this history with interpretative boards, photographs and artefacts. Visitors take a virtual step back in time when they visit the Museum as there is so much to see. The Museum also produces books on history all relating to Townsville. I have been involved with the Townsville Museum since 2012 and have been the President since then. I am very proud of the volunteers who devote their time and energy to maintaining the Museum. I was born in Melbourne and came to live in Townsville in 1950. My father had retired from the Navy after serving from 1915 and had accepted a position with the Townsville Harbour Board as the supervising Chief Engineer of the suction dredge Townsville. Mum was born in Townsville. So my connection to Townsville goes back to 1950. I love the fact that Townsville is a Welcoming City with a diverse history and a lot of residents who come to Townsville to work for short periods usually return and make our City their forever home. It has that magnetism about it just like when Captain Cook’s compass played up whilst passing Magnetic Island. - Trish Cronin, President Townsville Museum Inc. https://www.townsvillemuseum.com.au/
