16.01.2022 On Mondays we Meet a Local.... Today we meet the marvellous Maggie, one talented local lady..... Born a truckies daughter, in Julia Creek western Queensland, Maggie was accustomed to travelling long distances. Mt Isa was the closest Kmart (2.5hrs drive) Townsville was the nearest large town where her mother would buy clothes and Christmas gifts. (8hrs drive) The family of four would spend every Christmas in Townsville, and the long drives gave plenty of time for reading and c...reating stories in her head. There are only so many ways to get creative in playing eye spy, if they others playing aren’t as creative, it can lead to all-out anarchy in the back seat. Maggie attended boarding school in Townsville and thrived in performing arts and creative writing. She enjoyed her time at boarding school and thought up many ways to get an extra cream bun on Friday. She knew once she finished school, she wanted to get a job and travel the world. She was fortunate to land a job in Westpac and through the travel section booked on a six Contiki tour of Europe a month after turning 18. She wrote a diary of her experiences and looks back with wonder of how brave and fearless she was to embark on such an adventure on her own. She has been a gypsy soul ever since. Pre-COVID Maggie enjoyed travelling to faraway and sometimes unusual locations, always planning where she was going next. Wherever she went, she always appreciated returning to Townsville. The lifestyle and people are like no other. Townsville is a friendly place and is a great base to come and go from. In winter I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else, summer, well that’s a different story. 2000 Maggie moved back to Townsville with her then-husband and two small children. She has managed several retail stores and embraced her creative and storytelling side with her merchandising and creation of advertisements. 2013 Maggie moved from retail into administration positions with local and federal governments. 2017 Maggie wrote and illustrated The Elly Rose Adventures - Selfies from Townsville and The Elly Rose Journals - Townsville, selling over 1000 copies. 2018- Maggie wrote and illustrated Elly Rose in Japan, Elly Rose in Sri Lanka, and Elly Rose in Denmark, all selling well internationally. 2018- Maggie wrote her first non-fiction book Through the Door to Sri Lanka, an educational book about the country and some of its many exciting facts about history and culture. *Maggie also provides us with local author interviews and book reviews for our "On the Bookshelf" section inside our monthly newsletter* #meetalocal #townsvilleauthor #townsvilledigitalartist #maggieohara #townsvillefamilylife
