24.01.2022 Around 466 million people worldwide have disabling hearing loss and 34 million of these are children. It is estimated that by 2050 over 900 million people will have disabling hearing loss. Hearing loss may result from genetic causes, complications at birth, certain infectious diseases, chronic ear infections, the use of particular drugs, exposure to excessive noise, and ageing.... 60% of childhood hearing loss is due to preventable causes. 1.1 billion young people (aged between 1235 years) are at risk of hearing loss due to exposure to noise in recreational settings. Unaddressed hearing loss poses an annual global cost of US$ 750 billion. Interventions to prevent, identify and address hearing loss are cost-effective and can bring great benefit to individuals. People with hearing loss benefit from early identification; use of hearing devices, cochlear implants and other assistive devices; captioning and sign language; and other forms of educational and social support. Current estimates suggest an 83% gap in hearing device need and use, i.e., only 17% of those who could benefit from use of a hearing aid actually use one. Source - World Health Organisation

04.01.2022 Thursday info post! What Is a Cochlear Implant? A cochlear implant is a surgically implanted device that helps overcome problems in the cochlea (KO-klee-uh). The cochlea are snail-shaped, curled tubes near nerves in the ears. They transform sound vibrations reaching the ear into signals that can be sent to the auditory nerve (or hearing nerve). The auditory nerve then sends these signals to the brain, where theyre translated into recognizable sounds.... If important parts of the cochlea arent working as they should and the auditory nerve isnt stimulated, theres no way for the sounds to get to the brain. As a result, hearing doesnt happen. This is called sensorineural hearing loss. By completely bypassing the damaged part of the cochlea, the cochlear implant uses its own electrical signals to stimulate the auditory nerve, allowing the person to hear. Source - kidshealth.org

03.01.2022 Time for a Thursday info post, this is a special one for me as I personally suffer from this disease, and understand exactly how these symptoms can affect you. What is Menieres disease? Menieres disease is a rare disorder of the inner ear that causes dizziness, vertigo and balance problems. There is no cure, but the symptoms can be managed.... People with Menieres disease suffer attacks during which they experience severe vertigo (a spinning sensation), balance problems, nausea and vomiting. Attacks usually last between 2 and 4 hours and leave the person feeling exhausted. Some people have several attacks of Menieres disease in a short period of time, while other people only have an attack every few months or years. In most people with Menieres disease, the condition is present in just one ear although it often leads to progressive hearing loss in that ear. How is Menieres disease managed? There is no cure for Menieres disease. Treatments aim to control the symptoms. If you are diagnosed with the condition, you might be given medicines (known as diuretics) to reduce the fluid in your body and take pressure off the inner year so you have fewer attacks. During an attack, you can use medicine to stop you from vomiting or feeling nauseous, to control vertigo and to reduce anxiety. Sometimes steroids or antihistamines can help. If you experience severe symptoms with Menieres disease or frequent attacks, your doctor may suggest referral to an ear, nose and throat surgeon. Some people have surgery to cut the nerve responsible for balance or to drain fluid from the inner ear. If you experience hearing loss, a hearing device may help. From www.healthdirect.gov.au

02.01.2022 The Outer Ear collects sound waves and directs them through the ear canal and along to the eardrum. The Middle Ear - as the sound waves strike the eardrum it begins to vibrate, as a result of this vibration it triggers the extremely fast movement of three bones that are located in the middle ear. Via this process sound is intensified before reaching the inner ear through a membrane known as the oval window. The Inner Ear - the sound waves travelling through the oval window me...mbrane create a waving motion of the fluid inside the cochlea. Resulting from this, thousands of sensing hair cells are activated and consequently, electric signals are created. These electric signals travel to the brain along the acoustic nerve where they are interpreted as sounds See more

01.01.2022 Ear infections are common, especially in children. They cause earache and temporary hearing loss. Ear infections usually go away on their own within a week or two, but sometimes need treatment with antibiotics. You or your child may need pain relief. Some children with repeated ear infections, where they may be causing long term problems, may require surgery. Sometimes the ear drum can burst. This relieves the pressure and should clear up by itself after a few days. See your... doctor if symptoms dont improve, you or your child is in a lot of pain, or there is pus or fluid coming from the ear. The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners recommend that middle ear infection (otitis media) in non-indigeneous children between the ages of 2-12 should not be treated with antibiotics unless there are signs of the child being generally unwell, such as having a fever. For more information, speak to your doctor or visit the Choosing Wisely Australia website.
