22.01.2022 Windows 7 End of Life As of the 14th of January 2020 Windows 7 will no longer be supported by Microsoft. Which basically means they will no longer be releasing updates or patches for the operating system which contribute to its security, stability and general well being. This however does not mean you need to throw out or upgrade your Windows 7 computer. It doesn’t mean it will stop working and if you do upgrade there are many things to consider, specially when weighting agai...Continue reading

21.01.2022 http://www.townsvillenerds.com/antivirus-phone-number/ How this scam works Your sitting on your computer typing away when a notification crashes across the screen and tells you that you have viruses on your computer.... It sounds legitimate enough. Except for the fact legitimate antivirus programs do not need you to call them to speak to someone. The software giving you this message is indeed the virus or adware, and tricking you into thinking it is your antivirus program and you should do as it says.

16.01.2022 http://www.townsvillenerds.com/dropbox-vs-onedrive-vs-goog/ What is Cloud Storage Cloud storage is just another way to say online storage.... You can store data such as photos, music and documents on a large range of media like your hard drive or external drive. Storing files online is a slower process because you are bound by the speed of internet connections and data limits. But it a great idea for anyone who wants to protect their important files. If your computer fails, or your backups are lost in a fire, stolen or misplaced you can conveniently assess your files from any computer in the world with an internet connections, assuming you remember your login details. The three services I am going to talk about are free and easy to install. Dropbox, Onedrive and Google Drive. All of these services offer free but limited space and if you require can be purchased online.

16.01.2022 https://www.townsvillenerds.com/transferring-data-between-/ Transferring Data Between Computers Townsville computer repairs... We often get calls from customers asking them to move all their data and computers files from there old computer to their new. If the old computer has failed it might be more of a data recovery job than a transfer, but either way, transferring data from one computer to another is a lot more complicated and in depth than just sticking a USB into the computer and copying and pasting the data. So because the phrase transferring files from one computer to another is so loaded, this post endeavors to understand what is transferable, what isn’t and the different types of files and systems needed to make this happen. Specific Data/Files Moving just the data from one computer to another is quite simple when we think of them in terms of single files. These files can include pictures, videos, text documents, PDF’s and other particular files you have downloaded, made or edited. These files can usually be move to a USB device, online cloud service or even transferred over the internet. It is very straight forward as long as you know there location on your computer, laptop, desktop or external hard drive. Transferring these files from one computer to another is quite simple, however it does not mean you can open them. Programs and Applications Now you have moved your files such as a word file from your old computer to your new, it will not open simply by clicking on it. You will need to install the application program which opens it and in this case it is Microsoft Office. These programs such as Office, Photoshop, or Adobe Acrobat Reader usually do not come preloaded on your computer and will need to be installed. It is not simply a matter of copying these programs to your USB and moving from the old computer to the new. Installing them on your new device is a process and will involve the installation media if it come with it, such as disks and the serial key licensing you’ve paid to use them. In many cases a new computer will require a new purchased license. Computer and Program Settings Computer settings are just that, settings specific to that computer and most of the time they can not be moved between computers. However some programs will have their own settings which you can export from a program installed on one computer and import into the same program on another computer. The program and applications in particular needs to support this function and sometimes it wont work if you are using different versions of the program depending on how good it is. There are also programs out there which claim to do a lot of the transfer for you. But we have yet to find one which does it good enough, often missing importing files and settings. 13.01.2022 http://www.townsvillenerds.com/fruitfly-apple-mac-virus/ Apple Computers Do Get Viruses The common belief is Apple Mac computer do not get viruses. Yes, Apple Macs are built on top of a foundation which viruses find it hard to infect, but the truth is Apple computers desktops and Macbook’s do in fact get viruses as well.... There is a much smaller market share for Apple computers so you hear a lot less about Viruses on Apple Macbooks and Imacs than Microsoft Windows computers top which there are a lot more out there. I can only assume because there are more Windows computers out there, criminals make more viruses for Windows computers to cast there net much wider.

12.01.2022 http://www.townsvillenerds.com/windows-10-disk-usage/ More Memory Your computer is probably setup so when it runs out of memory (not storage) it will start trying to substitute it with hard drive resources.... I don’t like telling people to go out and buy more hardware, but sometimes more memory is needed to make your hard drive run better and less usage. You can change how bigger page file your computer allocates from your hard drive to substitute RAM, but it will always be slower and put more demand on your hard drive. Again Solid State drives handle this a lot better.

11.01.2022 http://www.townsvillenerds.com/alternative-web-browsers/ Lunascape Most people like lightweight fast and minimalist web browsers. But for everyone else who like lots of buttons and shortcuts to all sorts of services and feel better browsing that way Lunascape is for you.... If you can image a website full of short cuts to services such as CNN etc, Lunascape is a great web browser to download.

11.01.2022 http://www.townsvillenerds.com/email-client-alternatives/ Email Client Alternatives A lot of people use Microsoft Outlook and with good reason. Outlook has been around a long time and does a very good job at all things calendar, contacts and emails. But the main reason most of us know about Outlook is because it comes with Microsoft Office, not because everyone decided to go out and buy it. So Microsoft has done a very good job ensuring most people use Outlook.... Although Microsoft Outlook is a great email client, you do not have to use it. You can access your email pretty much through any email client you choose, and there are a lot of them out there. I would like to introduce to use some alternative email clients. I have talked about Mozilla Thunderbird before which is a great free email client, so I am not going to go into that one again, in case you wonder why it is missing from the list.

08.01.2022 http://www.townsvillenerds.com/microsoft-called-you-scam/ How it works Your sitting at your house minding your own business when the telephone rings. Most of the time it is your land line and a foreign voice on the other end of the line with a few seconds delay between sentences informs you they are from Microsoft and your computer has a virus on it.... You think to yourself, Yeah, I could have. After all I have a computer, and not only that it has Microsoft on it and it is always playing up, it must be true. But it’s not true. its purely a numbers game. Most people in Australia have computers, have the internet and some sort of Microsoft package or operating system.

07.01.2022 https://www.townsvillenerds.com/your-bank-has-told-you-to-/ There are many scams online right now. When we think of computer virus and hackers we automatically think of some antisocial type personality, sitting in their basement, hacking away.... I don’t think its really like that anymore. It seems more people are interested in scamming you and making money, over destroying your computer. The people aren’t the antisocial type, but well organised crime groups who are targeting innocent Australian people and our money. A lot of people don’t even know they have been ripped off, nor targeted, until they see money actually go missing from their bank accounts, or the bank has called and informed them their bank account has been compromised, so they need to get their computer looked at before it can be reinstated.

04.01.2022 http://www.townsvillenerds.com/viruses-in-emails/ Can I get a Virus from an eMail Yes, you can most certainly and lots of people do get viruses from emails.... It is not so much the eMail itself which is giving you the virus, but the attachments they contain. To add insult to injury if you have got a virus on your computer from an email, it was probably you who opened the attachment and activated (executed) the virus and the person who sent it to you, most likely didn’t even know they sent it.
