25.01.2022 And so begins the journey of Atlas Soils Our first ‘living top-dress’ blend made entirely from local upcycled organics and locally sourced materials We start trial production this week and to date this work (9 months so far) has involved 9 local businesses with more to come when we distribute - we are very proud of that and has been a key focus. When ‘waste’ goes to landfill there is almost NO business activation at all....... Our objective is to build strong lawns, gardens and amplify urban agriculture from the ground up (soils - chemistry, structure, biology). Fixing soils through a science based approach, local expertise and inspired by nature. Just got to punch out a few commercial orders and then will look at avenues to supply to locals...open to collaboration ideas

24.01.2022 Since corona times, I have developed a bit of a man crush on the humble sweet potato. If you have not tried growing it read below (4min) In short, it’s highly nutritious, ranks among the worlds most beneficial plants, grows quickly with little effort (for those with low garden self esteem) and leaves can be eaten along with tubers. Recipes below ... I have 5 ready for giveaway this week - pm me if you want one and we will leave it on letterbox.

24.01.2022 I really like this idea - perhaps to slow water down and allow infiltration in grazing country above the dam? With good soil science Thought provoking stuff

24.01.2022 A profound problem/opportunity for new homes Most of the water consumption and stressed lawns in Townsville are due to this problem (watering with drinking water won’t help it) We are actually trying to grow lawns on roads ... This also impacts city flooding, infiltration and livability (street trees, parks and sporting fields) Atlas Soils are beginning a journey on how to improve soils when it’s cheap - at point of construction and will keep you all posted. Ideas and collaborators welcome. I got a good chuckle out of the screwdriver test, pitch fork and shovel test - would snap all of these on most lawns up here . See dancing corer vid recently. Cheers and still a great video Gypsum and air for amplified biology/health

24.01.2022 Finalizing urban food calendar for Townsville with some great help and leadership within council. Yesterday Hayden and I planted a bunch of long beans and cherry tomato seeds in walkways at north shore however I feel like it’s not enough and an opportunity exists right now in covid. People are active and may appreciate free nutritious food. Anyone have knowledge of fruit tree propagation in this or other groups? Perhaps we could integrate planting into the occasional daily... exercise? Jason James Lange See Muller Jocelyn Lange

23.01.2022 For the chilli lovers Happy Friday

21.01.2022 Now is the perfect time to get planting and hay bales can be a creative way to establish temporary food plots as a low-cost raised system. Consider supporting the great local business Delivering Friday for those interested. Will send info on our seasonal food plots in bales after they arrive

21.01.2022 One of two spots left - does not have to be Townsville lga

20.01.2022 Amazing work from and old friend and little gem - thanks tam. I will repost this great/simple recipe for picking fresh produce closer to harvest time but I thought this could be really fun to do with the kids (and adults!) during these times

16.01.2022 Martha and snoop talk container gardens and home grown plant protein Chuckles aside, much of the US cannot afford water during covid 19 and some of the planets long discussed ‘water wars’ are unfolding quickly with additional health pressures. Cities encouraging people to grow food for themselves has never been more important.... I will work on sharing some more practical info on this Page in coming weeks. Happy Tuesday

16.01.2022 Hay bale gardening update: Strawberries, leak and chillies going really well. Roots are now well established and watering only once or twice per week. Good responses to biological ferts. I got a little greedy with spacing on one bale and subsequently have had reduced yield. Will keep updates as leaks get closer to harvest

15.01.2022 Close to a previous home town, this vertical farming system uses a old car park in the city, activates a dying restaurant precinct, creates jobs and produces ~ 10x the yields of tradition farming methods. much less water much less carbon high nutrient density ... is profitable when paired with car park has lower nutrient inputs Cool video and happy Father’s Day to the dads today

15.01.2022 Great provocation from friend in New York - if I was growing veggies in my garden I would be very worried about watering with coke and juice (it would likely kill my produce with acidity alone). The gut microbiome (garden in the gut) could be looked at in a similar way a visual link between soft drinks, gut biology and thus our brain function and decision making (happens from gut). Cool work and makes me think twice about soft drinks....

14.01.2022 Building Frog Hotels is great fun and easy Sweet potato leaves are edible delicious Trim sweet potato runners and grow more The composting crate is working well

12.01.2022 Interesting read for the innovators in the group. By comparison, my recent 90-day long harvest and man-crush on sweet potato yielded 3kg or $7.50 worth of produce The leaves harvested were of much great value. Urban farming (including polyculture - energy + soil + agriculture) in the dry tropics has tremendous opportunity. Our long sunny days are a gift ... 10.01.2022 Thanks AngEric Santo for the bales. Prepped last two weeks and planted in them on the weekend with healthy looking strawberries, chillies and leaks on the go. Let’s see how we go. Two bales high hopefully keeps out

10.01.2022 Perhaps a coincidence. I found this guy today. I have been using probiotics more frequently and my soil life is just silly at present. Here is a wonder Article that is a little alarming and a great nudge towards biological first aid in a city ... https://www.australiangeographic.com.au//ghosts-of-christ/

09.01.2022 Now that’s a cool idea Anyone keen to help? Maybe a paid men’s shed project and in a north shore park?

09.01.2022 Some nice tips as we slide into peak growing season - blood and bone for possums sounds interesting. Anyone tried this? Happy Easter all

07.01.2022 Awesome - This approach applies also to natural area management in Townsville and reinstating removed vegetation in our landscape for resilience, cooling, reef protection and urban food abundance. Building resilience from the soil up ... Happy Thursday

06.01.2022 Some more great reasons to grow. due to the current practices of corporate farmingtoday’s fruits and vegetables lack important trace minerals. That’s because pesticides and modern farming practices strip minerals from the soil. To make up for this, corporate farmers artificially addback in only the three major ones: nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassiumthey do not add back in trace minerals, which scientists have only recently realized are essential for the functioning of our immune system

01.01.2022 You would have to eat 53 peaches in 2010 to get the same amount of vitamin A as 2 Peaches in 1951 Bringing biology back to soils can also bring back nutrient density ... Composting and or bokashi at home

01.01.2022 That’s a true story

01.01.2022 Apologies for the amature video work however I have decided to share small activities with Hayden as the Coronavirus lockdowns escalate. Last week we decided to get back into brewing Kombucha - its so easy and is a wonderfull replacement for sugary treats. We have extra scoby's ready to give away responsibly. Please share any recipe or activities you are doing to make the most of the isolation. Be safe all.
