09.06.2022 ...the results are in! Our winner, in just 6 weeks has lost an amazing 13.4% of his body weight.... The results are not just about the weight loss, but also the health benefits that follow. Cooper can now jump up into the car, he has lost his puffy breathing, and is feeling so good. While not everyone can be the winner, all pets in the challenge have lost weight and that is a prize in itself. Our lovely Royal Canin rep, Lisa Sampson came along to personally congratulate Coops on his win (and his mum, Sue for all her hard work). Thank you to Royal Canin for supporting this challenge and providing such a fantastic prize ! #townsvillevetclinic #TVC #weightlosschallenge #royalcanin #pethealth #supportlocaltownsville #townsvillepets #doghealth #cathealth

09.05.2022 . If your dog or cat is over the age of 7 years then they are generally considered a senior (keeping in mind that this can vary significantly between small and large breeds). In horses it is over 16 years of age. In relative terms, our pets age much faster than humans, meaning by the time your canine companion is nine years old, their organs, joints and metabolism are comparable to a person aged 50-60 years of age (breed dependant). T...hat’s not too far off retirement age ! For the next few months we will be shining a spotlight on our Senior Pets. Watch this space !!

25.01.2022 We are about to start thinking about planning for the storm season, but before that we need to deal with the risks of the dry season. Do you have a bushfire plan in place, particularly for your horses or livestock ?

25.01.2022 Found in Aitkenvale. Please contact the clinic if this little one belongs to you. Photo ID and proof of ownership required.

23.01.2022 Apart from there being an influx of Border Collies (must have been something in the water ), it was another good range of puppies, sizes and temperaments at last month's puppy pre-school. Congratulations to all of our new graduates ! Unfortunately our trainer will be away next month so no new classes in December for either puppy pre-school or Firm Foundations Dog Training, but watch this space for advice on our classes starting in the new year. Bring on 2021 !!!

23.01.2022 A good mix of puppy sizes this month learning how to interact with each other and their families in order to build strong bonds and resilient dogs. 17.01.2022 UPDATE #2: All sold ! Needing homes for some cute kittens that are currently being fostered by one of our vets. UPDATE: If only we had 10 ginger kittens, we could have sold them all but sadly only have the one. It appears that he is spoken for but don't overlook the lovely little torties.... You can adopt a kitten for $190 and this includes (together with the kitten): *. First kitten vaccination *. Microchip *. Desexing at 5-6 months of age *. Up to date worming *. Free bag of Royal Canin kitten food, with a kitten pack We think the kittens will be around 8 weeks of age by the end of next week so will then be ready to go to their new homes. 16.01.2022 Here at TVC we support happy and healthy pets, and never has it been more important to be aware of our own health and happiness. Social restriction and working from home can be challenging, upsetting, and depressing to many people. This can take a toll on our health as well as our pets’ health. Luckily, pets can be a wonderful outlet for relieving stress and increasing happiness when we are feeling our worst. Here are several options to help both you and your pets remain as ...happy as possible during social distancing and self-isolation: 1. Maintaining your normal routines including mealtimes and planned exercise as much as possible. 2. Continuing to go out for exercise while respecting social distancing guidelines. 3. Playing with your pet at home with a ball, tugging rope, feather wand, or a safe laser light. 4. Constructing or providing your pets with puzzle toys or feeders to keep them busy while you’re working from home. A snuffle mat made of scraps of cloth stitched together or a kong to hide treats in can go a long way if you can’t afford fancy puzzles! 5. Making sure both you and your pets get the alone time you need to relax. Sometimes it can get frustrating for both parties if you can’t get a break from each other! If you have any issues you would like to discuss with us about your pet’s health, please do not hesitate to call. We are all in this together, so stay safe everyone!

16.01.2022 Looking into stud dog semen freezing ? Pupsicles will be returning to Townsville next month and your appointment can be arranged by contacting Simon on 0459 365 657.

This also includes those suburbs on the Flinders Highway (and surrounds) on the way to Charters Towers. 14.01.2022 It's that time of year again... the weather is warming up and the parasites are on the prowl. Do you know what your pet is covered for ? Do you need help deciphering all of the possible products out there ? Call the clinic on 4779 0233 to ensure you are on the right track.

13.01.2022 Is your pet getting on a bit in age? Worried about potential underlying health issues that your geriatric pet may have? It is extremely important not only for your pet’s health but also your piece of mind to ensure your pet has had a thorough checkup. June is Senior Pet Month and until 30 June 2020, your senior cat or dog (aged over 7 years) can book in for the Senior Pet Package for $240 (consisting of consult, physical examination, full blood profile and urinalysis usually ...valued at over $340). Just a few weeks ago we had an older kitty presenting with a number of issues, including increased thirst and urination. A physical examination and blood tests were performed and showed an increase in urea, creatinine and SDMA, indicating likely kidney disease. It was important to start him on an appropriate diet to help his kidneys function optimally and the Royal Canin Renal diet has been scientifically tested to contain high quality protein to help reduce kidney workload. The owner was skeptical at first as this cat was a very fussy eater and was unsure if he would eat the renal diet. After transitioning onto the Royal Canin diet the kitty’s owner was very pleased to find that the kitty actually loved the food, which bodes well for future management of his condition. Call us today to ensure that your senior pet is as well cared for.

10.01.2022 VETERINARY NURSES REQUIRED Two of our wonderful veterinary nurses are moving on to pursue career and family plans. We will miss them both, but this provides an opportunity for friendly motivated people to join our team. Townsville Veterinary Clinic is a mixed equine and small animal practice serving tropical North Queensland for over 40 years. Our team of seven veterinarians include a specialist equine surgeon and experienced mixed and small animal veterinarians. The TVC nurs...ing staff have experience in equine, small animal and wildlife nursing care in addition to their friendly and caring attitude. TVC provides equine clinical teaching to final year veterinary students from James Cook University School of Veterinary Science. Nurses in the equine clinic help to supervise students during hospital treatments. The ideal candidates will be experienced and take pride in their work, providing the highest level of care. They will also use their experience to supervise our keen younger staff with back up from an experienced veterinary and nursing team. These full-time roles involve mixed general nursing and reception and client communication duties. The first position is for someone with a background in equine nursing including caring for hospitalised medical and surgical cases. Our team rotate through the equine and small animal hospital so small animal nursing will be included in their duties. The second position will involve more small animal nursing, both medical and surgical cases, but horse handling experience is required, and some equine nursing experience would be an advantage. Applicants should submit their resume to the attention of Drs Ben Ledez, Dr Brad Dowling, Dr Louisa Hick and Carmel Cummins at [email protected].

10.01.2022 Just like humans, animals can suffer from arthritis and the signs are usually more apparent in the colder months. Arthritis, also called osteoarthritis is inflammation within joints and the tissues that surround them. Arthritis occurs when the protective cartilage in the joint becomes damaged because of previous trauma or normal wear and tear. When cartilage is damaged, it becomes inflamed and begins to deteriorate resulting in damage to the underlying bone. Signs to lo...ok out for in your pet that may have osteoarthritis include: reluctance to take walks of usual length stiffness (that may disappear once the pet has "warmed up difficulty climbing stairs, jumping into the car etc. limping and/or an abnormal gait licking at a single joint acting withdrawn, spending less time playing with family soreness when touched out of character grumpiness How can you help your pet?: The most successful approach to osteoarthritis management is multi modal and combines several different treatment options tailored to your pet’s needs. The following treatment options are available: * weight reduction * controlled exercise * neutraceuticals * injectable chondroprotectives eg. Pentosan or Zydax * acupuncture and gentle massage including flexion /extension of the joint may also help * prescription medications i.e. non-steroidal anti-inflammatories If you think your pet is showing any of the above signs bring them in for a check up with our Vets who can discuss treatment options with you.

10.01.2022 Congratulations to Dash, Charlie, Hershey, Nellie and Jasper ! They are the latest graduates from puppy pre-school and Nellie has even decided to advance to our Firm Foundations Dog Training classes. Stay tuned to learn more about the next stage of training we can offer !
