20.01.2022 TPI Federation Remembers On 15 August 2020 we will be marking the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. To acknowledge this significant anniversa...ry, as well as of all those who served during this war, the Prime Minister, the Hon Scott Morrison MP, and the Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, the Hon Darren Chester MP have launched the #OneInAMillion campaign. #OneInAMillion is a communications initiative to raise awareness in the community about the over one million Australians who served during the Second World War, it has two elements; o #OneInAMillion: Wall of Respect a social media wall of photographs, and o Hearing their stories a series of eight compelling interviews in the form of short animated videos that share moments of inspiration and courage. We are seeking your support for the ‘#OneInAMillion: Wall of Respect’ project, by encouraging your members to post a photo to their social media wall of them holding a photograph of a family member who served in the Second World War, and use the hashtag #OneInAMillion. Since 2 June this year, the Minister has also been posting a daily social media series, 75 days, 75 stories, about Australians who lived through the Second World War, from those who served to the many who contributed on the home front. I would appreciate your assistance in communicating this information to your members, and encouraging their involvement in sharing an image for the ‘#OneInAMillion: Wall of Respect’ and listening to the video and social media series www.dva.gov.au/oneinamillion.

19.01.2022 1 September 2020 Washington Vietnam Veterans' Education Centre (Vietnam Memorial) As a result of a question that was posed at the last ESORT meeting of 20th August, DVA has now provided the Out-of-Session update on the Vietnam Veterans’ Education Centre:... In 2013, the Australian Government contributed US$3.3 million to the Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial Fund (VVMF) for the construction of a Vietnam Veterans Education Centre (VVEC) in Washington DC. In August 2019, the President and Chief Executive Officer of the VVMF advised the Department of Veterans’ Affairs that they were no longer able to continue with the construction of the VVEC. The VVMF advised they were instead considering an online / digital platform. The Australian Government’s funding commitment was provided specifically for the construction of an education centre and as such, the VVMF’s digital proposal no longer met the original agreement. The VVMF returned the amount of US$3.3 million to consolidated revenue and undertook to submit a new proposal for their digital platform and seek Australian Government support once the business case was prepared. The Australian Government remains supportive of the efforts of the VVMF to educating people about the Vietnam War, including the Australian experience and the impact this has had in shaping both of our nations, and advised that future plans proposed by the VVMF will be considered positively by the Australian Government. To date, the VVMF has not submitted a business case for their digital education platform to the Australian Government. Thank you Pat McCabe OAM President 0417 291 546

12.01.2022 MEDIA STATEMENT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE HMAS commemoration delivered in digital format... 3 November 2020 Australia’s greatest naval tragedy, the sinking of the HMAS Sydney II, will be remembered with an online ceremony to mark the 79th anniversary. Differing to previous years’ services, a pre-recorded ceremony will be delivered to the community online to pay respect to the 645 crew members who lost their lives at sea after the ship sunk off the Geraldton coast in 1941. City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said the service was taking on a new format this year to adhere to proper restrictions. Many of our events haven’t been reinstated this year due to COVID-19, and that’s why this year’s commemorative service will be presented in a different format, he said. It is still extremely important for us to deliver this service to the community as we know how important it is to pay homage to this tragic event which has played such a big part in our nation’s history. I would like to encourage the community to still take the time to remember and honour this significant event by tuning into the online broadcast. The City has worked closely with the HMAS Sydney II Warden, Naval Association of Australia, RSL, the HMAS Sydney II Advisory Committee and other bodies to pre-record an order of service much like previous years. Commander Greg Swinden R.A.N will provide the main address and CO of the HMAS Sydney V Commander Edward Seymour R.A.N will feature as a guest speaker. The wreath laying service will take place at the HMAS Sydney Memorial on the evening and will be live streamed as part of the broadcast. The broadcast will take place on the City of Greater Geraldton’s Facebook page and YouTube channel on Thursday 19 November from 5:45pm. Residents are also reminded that at approximately 7pm a large blank cannon shot will be fired as well as a display of multiple flares off the coast. There will also be a service for the Unknown Sailor on Sunday 15 November from 10-10:30am. It will take place at the Geraldton War Cemetery in Utakarra. The service takes place every year at the grave site of the Unknown Sailor to reflect and remember the servicemen who paid the supreme sacrifice for their country. This year this service is combined with the Pilgrimage to the Cemetery. For more information about the 79th HMAS Sydney II Commemoration service, contact the City on 9956 6600 or email [email protected] ENDS: Notes to media: For all media enquiries, please contact the Communications team via email to [email protected] or by phoning (08) 9956 6973.

11.01.2022 HEADQUARTERS 1st AUSTRALIAN TASK FORCE REUNION: CANBERRA 18-22 NOVEMBER 2021 RESCHEDULED DATES Due to the ongoing Corona Virus situation our 2020 Reunion of Headquarters 1st Australian Task Force / D & E Platoon (Nui Dat, South Vietnam 1966-1972) has now been rescheduled to 18-22 November 2021 and will still be held at the Capital Country Holiday Park which is located just off the Federal Highway, some eight km north east of Canberra. ... Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam war from 1965 1972 has had a lasting impact on all the servicemen and women who served there. HQ1ATF and its sub-unit Defence and Employment (D&E) Platoon, the longest continually serving Infantry Platoon in South Vietnam, served from 1966 1972 and encountered much enemy action during those years. Each two years HQ1ATF Association holds a reunion and the rescheduled 2021 event will remember 50 years since we closed the gates of Nui Dat. It is anticipated that some 70 Veterans and 60 wives/partners (a total of 130 people) will participate in the four day event. The reunion is an important part of the Association’s efforts in the healing process which is achieved through the continual networking of members and also importantly their partners and carers. With objectives to improve health and well-being and to reduce social isolation, the reunion plays a significant role. The Commemorative Dinner will be held on Saturday 20 November 2021 at the Old Parliament House (Museum of Australian Democracy). The dinner will be preceded by a Memorial Service at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on Anzac Ave, Canberra. For details contact: John Verhelst: 0437212121 or [email protected] www.hq1atf.org
