25.01.2022 One of the most sombre photographs take on the Western Front. Taken July 1917 in the Pozieres area of France. Australian soldiers at the memorial to the fallen ...members of the 1st Australian Division on the Western Front. The memorial is in the form of a white Celtic cross like those on many of the graves in the cemetery; it reads '1st Australian Division AIF'. Lest We Forget. Photograph came from the Australian War Memorial. Image file number EZ0129

25.01.2022 Did you know that between 1942 and 1945, 2428 POWs died in the Sandakan POW Camp along the Death March route and at the POW camp at Ranau? Great luck to our San...dakan Death March trekkers that have started their trek in the footsteps of the POW's. Yesterday they attended the formal Sandakan Day service held at the POW Memorial in Sandakan. Want to join us on this extraordinary trek? https://www.wildspiritadventures.com/sandakan-borneo/

25.01.2022 Lest We forget.

24.01.2022 Today, on the 11th Hour, of the 11th Day, of the 11th Month, we pause to remember all those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning... We will remember them. See more

24.01.2022 Very interesting : The film "1917" freely tells the terrible Battle of Bullecourt Credit: THE VOICE OF THE NORTH.... In the film by Sam Mendes, one of the Oscar favorites, two soldiers are to join Croisilles, near Arras, crossing "no man’s land", the desolate strip of land between the Allied and German lines. Écoust. Croisilles. But also Bapaume and Arras. The actors in the blockbuster signed Sam Mendes, among the favorites of the Oscars, quote abundantly the strategic places of the Battle of Bullecourt of spring 1917. If the scenario takes liberties with the history, it is not less often credible, assures the writer and journalist Gilles Durand. ARTOIS. Gilles Durand published in 2017 Bullecourt 1917 - In search of the missing soldiers (Éd. Les Lumières de Lille). He recounts the work carried out by his parents to rehabilitate the memories of the thousands of Australians and Britons who died in this battle in the 1970s. - The film takes place between Écoust-Saint-Mein and the Bois de Croisilles. What battle does it evoke? Gilles Durand: That of Bullecourt. It took place in two phases, in April and then May 1917. It was part of the Battle of Arras, a great offensive intended to destabilize the Germans so that the French would break down the enemy's defenses on the Chemin des Dames, in the Aisne. It’s supposed to be a breakthrough to win the war. It's a disaster. Thousands of British, Australian and German soldiers lose their lives in a futile battle ... " - The story of "1917" is suspended during the crossing by the no man’s land heroes between the Allied and German positions, in order to prevent falling into a German trap. Is it true? "What is true is that the Germans withdrew in early 1917 to the Hindenburg line they had just built. They wanted to reduce the front line. As the film shows, they destroy everything in their path during this withdrawal, it is the scorched earth policy. Installed in these reinforced trenches, they knew that the English were going to attack to make diversion. The Allies were listened to. Telegraph messages were received from a surveillance station based in Cagnicourt. Tanks were used, which was new at the time. But you can hear them coming from far away, which also destroys the element of surprise. Letters from Australian soldiers that my father recovered tell it. " - These huge craters, these rotting bodies hanging on the barbed wire Credible, too? "Yes, it is realistic. Between the battles of April and May, bodies could not be recovered. When Australian soldiers in British attack again on May 3, they come across tangled bodies in the barbed wire. This battle was very badly perceived. The British staffs send young people to the puzzle. The film shows it, by the way. The generals persisted despite the fact that Bullecourt was not a strategic point and when they quickly learned that the Chemin des Dames offensive had failed. It was probably a matter of honor. In April, Vimy Ridge was taken by the Canadians ... "

24.01.2022 Willie Apiata VC Bill Henry "Willie" Apiata, VC (born 28 June 1972) is a former corporal in the New Zealand Special Air Service, who became the first recipient ...of the Victoria Cross for New Zealand. He received the award on 2 July 2007 for bravery under fire during the War in Afghanistan in 2004, in which he carried a gravely wounded comrade across a battlefield, under fire, to safety. Apiata is the only recipient of the Victoria Cross for New Zealand, as opposed to the Victoria Cross previously awarded. There are no living New Zealand recipients of the Victoria Cross, which was last awarded to a New Zealander for actions in the Second World War. Between 1864 and 1943, 21 members of the New Zealand forces were awarded the Victoria Cross including Captain Charles Upham, awarded a Bar to the Victoria Cross in 1945 for gallantry in Egypt in 1942. Apiata has donated all of his medals, including his VC, to New Zealand. In 2008 he succeeded Sir Edmund Hillary as the "most trusted New Zealander".

20.01.2022 Just one week ago ESTA & Vicpol allowed us to keep our 2 buggies at their Ballarat facility so they were safe overnight as a commitment to groups like ours who ...help veterans and first responders where we can so we were devastated to hear that tragically a member from ESTA Ballarat succumbed to his own demons yesterday. He was a fire & ambulance call taker & dispatcher. The entire policing, fire and ambulance communities are standing right along side our ESTA brothers and sisters in these tragic times. RIP. 20.01.2022 A large Paulownia Tree Plantation in Wooroolin near Kingaroy and Nerang in Queensland Australia were transformed into rubber plantations for Danger Close: The B...attle of Long Tan. No rubber plantations exist in Australia and it took filmmakers many years to identify a suitable alternative. Not only was the Battle of Long Tan fought in a rubber plantation, but the Australian Task Force base at Nui Dat was also located in and around a rubber plantation. Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan was the first production to film in those areas. Coincidentally, Delta Company and the rest of 6RAR was raised in Queensland and is still based at Enoggera Barracks just outside of Brisbane Queensland. #DangerCloseMovie is in cinemas now! 18.01.2022 Fort Canning and The BATTLEBOX TOUR: A Story of Strategy & Surrender. A great tour today where we were taken 9 metres underground into the Fort Canning Battlebox - the authentic World War II secret underground command centre built in Singapore in the late 1930s. Highly recommend the tour where we learned why and how Singapore fell to the Japanese in just 70 days. We were guided through the maze of rooms within the Battlebox and learned how each functioned during the war. ... This tour really was an eye opening account of "the worst disaster and largest capitulation in British history". The Battlebox is the exact place that history occurred - where the momentous decision to surrender Singapore to the Japanese was made on 15 February 1942, marking the beginning of the end of the British Empire, and the start of the darkest chapter in Singapore's history.

17.01.2022 I've had many conversations with veterans and their families since being given the honour of being the Victorian Minister for Veterans. I’ve heard of ex-service... personnel sitting at home as their skills aren’t recognised and they are unable to utilise these vital skills to gain meaningful employment, I’ve heard about a young veteran who through his service lost his arm and leg, however when he asked DVA to assist him in moving house, the computer said no, you come under the wrong act, I’ve spoken to family members where they have reached out to DVA for assistance because it became too much for the partners to continue the battle and have unfortunately taken their own lives. One told me that her partner's platoon was in an area where their torches were turning themselves on. When he returned and passed away due to cancer DVA said sorry, not due to your service. We can’t be satisfied with a system that produces these results no matter who is in Government and that is why I stood in the chamber yesterday and pleaded with all persuasions to back a Royal Commission that puts a line in the sand and says it’s not good enough that the men and women we send to protect or freedoms are treated this way and it’s a national disgrace that we have veterans taking their own lives at an alarming rate. Looking after and believing our veterans and their families should not be a political convenience, it should be something we all commit to and ensure we follow through with. We ask so much of these brave men and women, it’s time to fulfil our side of the commitment, listen to them and hear their pleas for a Royal Commission, draw a line in the sand and move forward with a system that is fit for purpose If you or someone you know needs support, help is available. 17.01.2022 Our Unsung Hero When you arrive at The Path of the Horse you will always be warmly welcomed with love and enthusiasm from our wonderful Kelpie, Oz. He has been ...with us since we started and he is a loving boy that gives as much affection and support as you want. Oz has been the ‘Therapy Animal of the Month’ as he often comes to you or quietly snuggles up just when he is needed most. He does annoy the horses a bit but they soon worked out he was all talk. Oz is not great at boundaries but just Iike our herd, he is honest and a great listener. He will ask for love and touch and especially a tummy rub but will offer you all the Kelpie love you can handle too. Thank you Oz.

16.01.2022 Vietnam Veterans Day at the Daylesford RSL. What a wonderful day of respect and remembrance for our Vietnam Veterans. Well done to all the the Daylesford RSL ...for making it a top day. The Daylesford RSL donated $3000 to the Path of the Horse to assist our work with veterans and emergency service workers And their families. This little RSL has helped us help others for 3 years now for which we are ever grateful for their support. It always seems to come at a time when we need it most. Thanks too to the Military Brotherhood MMC for putting on one of their legendary BBQs. The money they raised was kindly donated to The Path of the Horse and as always with these guys, it comes from the heart. Thank you to Matt Lund and all at the MBMMC West once again. Feeling very supported by some great people today.

15.01.2022 Commemoration of the crew of B-29 "Sweet Sixteen" 74 Years ago today a B-29 with tail code "T square 16" carrying out a supply mission raid over Nagasaki crash...ed into the top of Mount Sashiki. The previous day it had dropped loads of K-rations on the shores of Koyagi-Jima and on Fukuoka #2 camp itself. Some drums had to be recovered from the sea. These POW supply missions, known as ‘Operation Blacklist’ started only a week earlier. The airplane departed from Saipan US Airbase around 03:30 AM. Only one crew member, Glen M. Holm, miraculously survived the crash. Eight crew members and five passengers were instantly killed. A rescue mission immediately began by Military Police and some allied officers from the POW camp. The climb to the top of Sashiki was hot, slippery and exhausting. Some villagers had already found Holm alive and had taken him down to the beach from the 700 meter high mountain top. Holm was taken to the Military Hospital in Nagasaki. After having gained conciousness he was terribly confused, thinking he was still in Saipan. He did not know about the loss of his fellow crew members. A memorial for the B-29 crew was erected at the site of the former POW camp Fukuoka 2 along with a memorial for all 1563 POWs who suffered in this camp and at the Kawanami docks for three long years. 72 POWs died in this camp or in the shipyard and 7 others died later after having been transferred to other (coal mine) camps. 13.01.2022 Saddened to hear of the passing of former Australian Army aviator Terry Hayes. Terry flew Sioux helicopters in Vietnam, and was awarded the DFC for safely landi...ng after his helicopter was hit by gunfire in 1970. We owe a debt of gratitude to Terry for his actions in the afternoon of 31 August 1972 when he located the survivors of the RAAF Caribou crash in the PNG mountains that happened a few days earlier. Had Terry not persisted with the search, the four survivors might never have been found and the crash site never located. One of the survivors later recalled the joy of hearing Terry’s helicopter and the excitement of finally being located after being in the bush for three days. Terry received no formal recognition for this work. See more

10.01.2022 Hello Friends of The Path of the Horse. We need a bit of help and you may know someone who can help us with much needed round bales of hay. Each year we go th...rough around 80 - 100 round bales of hay plus approx 160 small lucerne square bales and lots of hard feed to help our older horses and those in a bit of work. Last spring didn't produce much growth in the paddocks or in the district which meant less available hay and a lot was rightly sent to farmers in drought stricken parts of Australia. The past few years a bloody generous Trentham local Tony Pack, has donated most our round bales of hay and he has been a godsend. Tony gave us all we had yet again and we really need 40 bales more. Its been a cold and wet winter meaning no growth in the paddocks although its promising for great growth in Spring. If you know someone who has some hay for sale and can deliver it then please let Dean know on 0418354362 as we have 3 weeks of hay left. We and the herd thank you for any help.

August, General Sir Ian Hamilton planned feints at Lone Pine and Cape Helles, main attacks again on the heights at Hill 971, Hill Q and Chunuk Bair, then feints clearing enfilade from German Officers’ Trench, The Nek, Quinn’s Post to Baby 700, and Russell’s Top to Pope’s Hill. Four Australian infantry soldiers, with a Rwandan mother and her child lying on a stretcher, wait for a helicopter to evacuate them from t...he Kibeho refugee camp, following the brutal massacre of over 2,000 unarmed civilians by the Rwandan Patriotic Army (RPA). The mother and child were among the large number of Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) who had gathered at the second United Nations Assistance Mission for Rwanda (UNAMIR II) administered camp at Kibeho, that at one time held an estimated 120,000 people, fleeing the genocide of the civil war between Rwanda's two tribal groups, the Tutsi and Hutu. The soldiers are from left to right: Signaller Barry Quinn, Trooper Jonathan (Jon) Church, Private Paul Price and Corporal Paul Jordan. 06.01.2022 I would love to share with you this beautiful story. Yesterday I was the witness of a beautiful action done by a little girl of the Fromelles Cobbers School... ...I was in the Fromelles museum and just before my departure I saw a little girl of year 1 go to the museum shop with her parents to buy a wodden cross with a poppy to put it on the grave of her adopted soldier Corporal Alfred George Tuck. On Saturday afternoon Kids have no school in France, no obligation for the little girl to come in the cemetery to pay tribute to her soldier...Just an act of love and kindness from a young girl with who I work on the remembrance of the fallen Cobbers...The parent told me that their daughter asked them to visit her soldier during the Saturday walk. I was moved and I had tears on my eyes, my work with the school principal and other teacher is not futile, the next generation is here. God bless you little girl. Lest We Forget See more
