05.01.2022 ARTHEARTHQ ArtHeartHQ Blue Square Exhibition opens with record 264 entries. The third annual ArtHeartHQ BLUE SQUARE art competition, which closed on July 31st,... has received a record number of entries from the Southern Highlands community. 264 artworks, including painting, sculpture, photographs and drawings in both 2-D and 3-D formats were entered. One third of each $30 entry fee has been donated to the Southern Highlands branch of CanAssist, the Cancer Assistance Network. In a handover function at the new ArtHead Gallery at 284 Argyle Street, CanAssist Southern Highlands President Jennifer Harper OAM received the donation cheque for $2,700 from Sonja Millis, ArtHeads owner and co-founder. "These funds, generated through this wonderful Blue Square Art Competition, will make a most welcome contribution to the work of CanAssist for cancer patients in the Southern Highlands needing support during their treatment," said Ms. Harper. "Naturally, with all the necessary restrictions on public meetings and assembly during the COVID pandemic, fundraising has been especially hard this year, as well as the impact on each households income. We thank all the artists who entered for their creative spirit in these difficult times and for this generous donation. Sonja Millis, in responding, said, "This is the 3rd annual BLUE SQUARE art competition. To have 264 entries at a time when so many people are doing it tough, shows just how important art is as part of who we are as a society, perhaps especially here in the Highlands." The show was judged by celebrated Bowral artist Desmond Freeman, who is also the CanAssist Southern Highlands Fundraising coordinator for 2020. The winning artwork was created by Jodie Kilmister with an acrylic on canvas entitled Blue for Boys. The winning entry receives a $2,000 prize. The Hangers Prize, awarded by all those involved in hanging the show went to Kerrie Leishman for The Rising -1, who receives a $500 ArtHead Gift Certificate. The Bob Millis Memorial prize of a $500 ArtHead Gift Certificate was awarded to Bob Green for Water Lady. The show, which fills every display area within the gallery, will be open to the public from August 8th, then throughout the rest of August and all of September on Saturdays and Sundays from 10.00am to 2.00pm each weekend. Entry numbers to the Gallery will be limited to 14 at any one time. Social distancing and the use of masks, with provided hand sanitiser, are required in accordance with government guidelines. Volunteers will be on hand throughout the exhibition period to ensure social distancing is maintained. The inspiration for this competition comes from Sonjas own personal loss of her husband Bob Millis to cancer three years ago and the establishment of the ArtHeart community wellbeing project. "The ArtHeart philosophy is one of kindness. One person can make a difference. Acting together, we empower each other to be so much more than one alone," says Sonja. A catalogue of the work is available in the Gallery. Most works are available for sale. All works are framed, or block mounted.
