24.01.2022 It does concern me all of the use of hand sanitiser that is getting splashed around the whole world atm, especially when soap and water is shown to do a better ...job. Do yourself a favor, don't always take the "shortcut" there is nothing out there showing us what the damage is from long term use. Endocrine-disruptors: chemicals that interfere with hormonal systems at certain doses. These disruptions can cause cancerous tumors, birth defects, developmental disorders, reproductive issues, neurological diseases, and immune system effects. They work by mimicking hormones that occur naturally in the body (leading to overstimulation), binding to receptors within cells and blocking the hormone from binding with other cells (preventing the normal signal and response within the body), or interfering with regular hormone production (altering its behavior or metabolism.) There are lots of repeat offenders in the house even contained in household names that your family may have been using for years unknowingly. It’s important to identify which chemicals are causing which kind of harm in order to demine the minefield that is the modern Western home. This first one, you’re probably familiar with Bisphenol A (BPA) This industrial chemical has been used in plastics and resins since the 1960s specifically the kind often used to make water bottles and store food (like tin cans). BPA is a mimicker. It tricks the body into thinking it’s estrogen. Thus, it’s been linked to breast cancer, reproductive maladies, obesity, heart disease, early puberty, and more. Because it’s so common in America, the government estimates that 93% of Americans have BPA in their systems. Dioxin Another industrially-released chemical, dioxin is largely contained in food supply. Meat, fish, milk, eggs, and butter are usually the contaminated culprits. Exposure to dioxin early in life or in the womb has been linked to reproductive issues in men and women, including lower sperm count for men. Not only that, but since they live for a long time and build up in the body They also affect our immune system and ability to fight diseases. Glycol Ethers Most often found in paints, cleaning products (because they cut grease well), brake fluid, and make-up. The EU recently ruled that these solvents can cause blood abnormalities, lower sperm counts, damage fertility, and possibly harm fetuses. Even exposure from having glycol-ether-paint on children’s bedroom walls has been linked to asthma and allergies. Phthalates This endocrine disruptor interferes with certain hormonal signallers in the body. Specifically, they send death signals to testicular cell, which has linked them to hormone changes, lower sperm count, sperm with lowered mobility, male reproductive systems with birth defects, thyroid issues, diabetes, and lower metabolisms. They’re often found in plastics, when something contains fragrance as an ingredient, toys, plastic wrap, and personal care products. Atrazine Atrazine is an herbicide, but it’s also an endocrine disruptor. In fact, it’s been found to turn male frogs female, complete with egg production, from even low levels of exposure. It’s most commonly used on corn crops in the U.S., which is the largest crop in America. 91.7 million acres of corn were planted in 2019. And atrazine keeps that crop safe. Because it’s used as an herbicide primarily, it also contaminates drinking water. It’s been linked to breast tumors, delayed puberty, prostate inflammation, and prostate cancer. Perfluorinated Chemicals (PFCs) It’s been estimated that 99% of American bodies contain PFCs. And some strains are not biodegradable meaning they’re forever chemicals. They never dissolve into organic compounds. PFCs, specifically PFOA (a degrade-resistant strain), affect sperm quality, kidney disease, high cholesterol, thyroid disease, low birth weight, and other serious afflictions. They’re usually found in non-stick pans and water-resistant coatings on carpets, furniture, and clothing. These chemicals are insidious. They are everywhere. And they’ll mostly be found altering the natural characteristics of something as in making something water-resistant that isn’t, or changing the properties of grease. Be on the lookout for an article soon discussing how to avoid endocrine-disrupting chemicals. There’s always a way, but as with anything in the modern world, it pays to be conscious. ~Urban Monk

23.01.2022 I was in the supermarket the other day and I spied this sitting on the shelf and I started to get a bit excited. Could there finally be an additive-free BBQ sau...ce sitting on the supermarket shelves that's also organic??? Currently there aren't any additive-free BBQ sauces in the major supermarkets that I know of. So this discovery had my heart skip a beat! The front of the bottle has all the right buzz words: No artificial colours or flavours ACO certified organic But I know better than to trust the front of the bottle so I turned it over to read the ingredients label and here's what I found: INGREDIENTS: Organic Tomato Puree (68%) (Water, Organic Tomato Paste), Organic Raw Sugar, Salt, Acidity Regulator (260), Organic Blackstrap Molasses, Thickener (415), Organic Garlic, Organic Onion, Organic Spices, Yeast Extract, Smoke Flavour, Organic Cacao Powder, Food Acid (330), Organic Burnt Sugar. Yeast extract!!! Why???? It was going so well until that dreaded ingredient! Yeast extract is a glutamate and can react in our bodies the same way MSG does. When you're supposed to be purchasing an organic product why would you want that in it?! I know I don't. So, the hunt still continues. There are artisan brands out there that you can buy like Johnno's Home Made but you have to hunt around for them. Or you can make your own, we have a yummy BBQ sauce recipe in our book, Everyday Additive-Free, which is great, but I was so hoping to get one I could buy when on holidays or when tomatoes are not in season Purchase our cookbook: https://additivefreelifestyle.com/book/ Tracey x

04.01.2022 Did you know: Most household cleaners contain harsh, damaging, toxic chemicals. These chemicals can cause an array of medical issues and have been linked to var...ious cancers, asthma and skin irritations and more. In fact, according to cancernews.com.au women are twice as likely to get breast cancer due to their cleaning products. Cleaning chemicals that contribute to increase breast cancer risk are: Alkylphenols are found in detergents and other cleaning products. This chemical is an endocrine disruptor that alters mammary gland development in rats. Synthetic musks found in fabric softeners, detergents and air fresheners, prevents cells from blocking toxins in animal study. Phthalates found in air fresheners, household cleaners and plastics. Endocrine disruptor and may cause organ damage and cancer. Formaldehyde found in spray and wick deodorizers and air fresheners is a suspected carcinogen. Terpenes used in household cleaners and air fresheners with pine, lemon and orange scents. Terpenes produces toxic chemical substance similar to formaldehyde which is a known carcinogen. Benzene found in household cleaning products is a known human carcinogen and linked to increased blood diseases, leukemia and organ system toxicity. and the list went on.... Also, children are often more susceptible to chemical exposure from cleaning products than adults. We challenge you to find a FULL ingredients listing on your cleaning products (you will find this incredibly hard, just saying). It is not a requirement to list ingredients on products in Australia and this should concern you. How do you know they are safe? Do you entirely trust large corporations to do the right thing? Let's be very honest here, most of them have a hideous track record... cough cough... Johnsons and Johnsons! Are you willing to risk it? I would much rather put my trust in companies that list EVERY single ingredient, that way you know they have nothing to hide, PLUS you get to make the choice if you use it or not. Cleaning up your cleaning is one of the easiest things you will do to live the full additive-free lifestyle. You could literally change your entire cleaning range in 10 mins - not even kidding! I now use - bicarb soda, essential oils, a cleaning concentrate and some coconut oil. I use the cleaning concentrate for everything - sink, dishes, vanities, baths, showers, toilets, floors, tiles, grout, outdoors, windows, cars... it also doubles as one epic stain remover! I use the coconut oil to polish timber furniture - no more Mr Sheen! And I use a variety of different essential oils for their powerful cleansing abilities, their fresh scent (to neutralise odours) and their ability to cut through grease and grime. This was the easiest thing I have ever done to lower my toxic load and to improve my health. Get on it today - let us help get you started with your own amazing doTERRA order, and change your life to low tox. Trace xx
