23.01.2022 HOW TO AVOID COSTLY HOME REPAIRS - DO IT ONCE DO IT RIGHT NUMBER 1 Shop around . . . .Not just for the price but do a little snooping around about the persons or company reputation.... Ask for someone to refer......... usually if they refer someone likelihood is theyre going to be reasonable because the person who referred them doesnt want mud on their face. So referrals are a great place to start. If you dont have the contacts, jump on to facebook and ask your friends, youre bound to gets some contacts. Keep note of our facebook page you never know when youre going to need a tradesman to fix another tradesmans repair. See my earlier post, Ive just fixed 2 dodgy repairs this week alone! NUMBER 2 Check their website and if they have reviews. You can usually tell a lot by their site and reviews. If in doubt, dont give them the work no matter how much you can save. NUMBER 3 Before giving anyone the green light on your repair or renovation Ask if part of their job is cleaning up. Its a great question because only quality tradesman will clean up after works are completed. The tradie who wants to make a quick buck and maybe taken some shortcuts, just wants to get out of there fast and likely they are too interested in the next job than completing yours to satisfaction. NUMBER 4 If youve already been stung for a renovation or repair in your home that isnt acceptable and not up to standard or simply you havent got what you paid for well this is what you can do about it.......... I will say it is a bit of a tricky, on one hand you want the same person to come back to fix it but on the other you have doubts of their ability to complete the job in a satisfactory manner. Wed suggest you give the benefit of the doubt to the person who did the job and get them back in. If its seriously bad, you may want to see if you can get an insurance claim. Failing the first 2 points, then make sure you get a reputable company base on their reputation and or reviews. Depending on the size of the job, you may want to consider a building inspector who will a thorough inspection and give you a written report. They may even have some recommendations of tradies for you. 08.01.2022 Today Im going to share a really neat and cool trick to safely get a broken light bulb out of the socket. Hopefully this will help with that age old, frustrating problem. Please observe the safety steps that we share Even though this is an easy fix, accidents can still happen. Ok, lets get started! 1. First, never use your bare hands, or stick something into the fitting to get it out. There are two hazards when we deal with this situation: the breaking of the glass and th...e potential shock from electricity. Make sure the power is off to the socket and remember that even though the switch is off, power is still present at the base of the light. 2. You can safely break the glass bulb and get a trash bag and put all the broken glass in it. Please remember to wear goggles, gloves and other protective gear. Once again, note that even if the light switch is off, DO NOT not pry a stuck light bulb out. Here are some tips on how to remove a light bulb base that has become stuck in a light fixture. Broken bulb potato fix 3. Be amazed by a handymans handy potato. You can make an effective bulb extractor from an uncooked potato. Carve one end of the potato into a cylinder small enough to fit inside the base but engage it about in diameter. Taper the tip of that cylinder and make a hole in the center of it to fit over the glass filament support. 4. Hold the potato by the unpeeled end and, push it firmly over the filament support and into the base. Then use it to turn the base counter- clockwise out of the socket.

05.01.2022 Handyman Tip of the day Fix a Clogged Drain Perhaps one of the most frustrating things, a clogged drain can force you under the sink with a monkey wrench for a good part of a night. The trick here is to think strategically.... First, you can try plunging ityes, with the same tool that you might have thought was only for the toilet. (If youre working with a bathroom sink, be sure to clog the overflow hole thats near the top of the basin.) Plunge it like you normally would a toiletwith a sink plunger of course. The next time youre around a plunger, take a look at it. Does it have an extended part that goes beyond the dome shape? If so, thats a toilet plungerthat extra three inches or so is to get deep down into the basin. If its just the dome/bowl, then you very well might be using a sink plunger to do a toilet plungers job. There is a difference, so take note. If that doesnt work, search for a clean-out plug on the main pipe. This handy opening (once unscrewed with a wrench) gives you access to the pipes without disassembly. Use a flexible, but tough brush to get in there and poke around to see if you can clear out any blockages. (Be very careful if youve already poured drain cleaners down the drain.) Be sure to have a bucket on hand below the plug, though, as you dont want any water splashing down on the floor while you wow everyone with your plumbing skills. If youre having some bad luck with the toilet and you find yourself without a plunger or if the plunger fails you, pour about a cup of dish detergent down there. Itll act as a lubricant for the clog to wash down. Youll need to let that work its magic for about 10 minutes. But while youre waiting, grab a good amount of hot tap waterwere talking multiple quarts herebut not hot enough that its boiling. Pour it into the toilet bowl from an elevation (not so high as to splash clogged toilet water everywhere). Pour in the water and just the whole mess will go down the drain.
