20.01.2022 INTERNATIONAL WOMENS DAY CELEBRATIONS! MEET SAMIRA: Electrical Apprentice What was a decider when working out what you wanted to do? -Exploring the career options in the electrical industry has always been an interest of mine since high school. However being a girl I always assumed uni would be my best option. It wasnt until I was in my gap year and I had moved out of home that I had the courage to apply for a Pre Apprenticeship course at tafe and ditch the uni idea! ... What industry do you work in? - I was lucky to land an apprenticeship in the transmission and distribution industry. My company look after the construction and maintenance of the power network (power lines and substations). Prior to this apprenticeship I was with a company who dealt mainly in commercial maintenance. What do you enjoy about that industry? - I love that working on the power network applies electrical principles on a large scale. Its an awesome privilege to be able to work on the infrastructure that delivers power to everyone. What I do for work is unique to only my company in the South West of WA so thats really cool too. What's been one of the biggest challenges you've faced? - Unfortunately as a young female in the electrical trade industry, already in less than a year I have experienced sexual harassment. I spoke up about it early and had loads of support from colleagues. The issues were resolved quickly, although its disappointing that this is something most women in trades will experience at least once in their career. What advice would you give to ladies considering a trade? - if you think a trade is something youd like to explore dont be afraid, everyone has a first time picking up tools! Doing a pre apprenticeship course is also a great way to get a feel for the trade you are interested in (if it is available). Where would you like to be in 5 years? - in 5 years Id love to have successfully completed my trade and settled into a specialised position at my current company. A bonus would be to have a mortgage on my own place.

20.01.2022 Message from outgoing BoardChair: Nicole OKeefe With the last AGM I chose not to nominate for a position on TradeUP Australias board. My journey with TradeUP Australia has been a fasinating one and I believe its time to hand the reins over. From here on in Kara Leeding will be the nominated BoardChair of TradeUP Australia. She is a powerhouse who has the capability to take TradeUP Australia through the next stages of the future. In the coming weeks you will see posts to m...eet the board that will steer TradeUP Australia. Personally I have loved my time volunteering with TradeUP Australia. Meeting so many passionate ladies about their trade who have no capability boundaries and so many people who support and champion female tradies anyway they can. I thank my board for their patience and support over the years. For being honest and guiding my decisions. Thank you to the people who have supported us through financial means, sharing our posts and interacting with us. I especially want to thank all the volunteers who have given TradeUP Australia their time. Without the volunteers we are just a shell so never underestimate your contribution to TradeUP Australia but also the people you meet at the events. Youre all inspiring so never stop telling your stories. Keep doing amazing things in your workplaces, stay safe and look out for each other!

05.01.2022 INTERNATIONAL WOMENS DAY CELEBRATIONS MEET ALIX: Cabinet Maker What's your trade? Cabinet Maker (14 years)... What do you love about your trade? I love the variety of work and also the many different jobs available within the Cabinet Making trade. Iv'e worked for 4 companies over the last 14 years and everytime I've started a new job I have had to learn the job from scratch. There is always so much to learn no matter how long you've been in the trade and that's the great thing about it. What advice would you give to ladies considering a trade? Simply, if you love something enough to make a career out of it just go for it! The worst that will happen is that it's different from what you expected and from there you can eliminate that. There's such amazing support out there from women who are already in trades and they are always willing to chat, mentor and support others who are working towards a trade job. What do you do for fun? I really enjoy being in the factory all week but on the weekend it's the complete opposite. I love going to the beach, going on day trips to random places around Perth and just getting out to adventure. What's one of your career highlights in your trade? Being appointed Leading Hand at work was a really big highlight for me. Seeing all my hard work finally paying off and getting the recognition was definitely a moment that will stay with me throughout my life. What do you consider your favourite tool and why? It's a very simple tool but i'm just going to come out with it. It's the drill! No matter what job or trade I can guarantee the drill will make your life alot easier. It's the perfect first purchase too as they are very affordable. Where would you like to be in 3/5/7 years? I'm really hoping to still be in the trade in the years to come. Wether it's in my current position, mentoring or even teaching I'm not too sure. I'll still be learning and growing my skills and that's my main goal.

01.01.2022 Message from Board Chair - Kara Leeding Hello! For those of you I haven't met yet, I started volunteering with TradeUP Australia during my electrical and instrumentation apprenticeship, which I finished at the end of 2019. I am currently work as an E&I technician at a gold mine just outside of Perth. ... I have really enjoyed the challenges, the laughs and the personal achievements along the way and I have a passion for helping others to see trades as a viable career option and so this is why I decided to nominate for the Board Chair role. We have such a great community within TradeUP, along with some wonderful volunteers and it's amazing to support each other and provide guidance to people following in our footsteps. The Board and some amazing volunteers have been working really hard in the background to get everything underway and I'm really looking forward to the year ahead. In the coming weeks you'll see some profiles introducing the new board members and regional representatives. Keep an eye out for some social and learning events as well that will occur each month for the rest of the year - starting next Friday 13th March at The Brisbane! This will be a good opportunity to celebrate International Women's Day with some likeminded friends. I will be there as well and hope to see some regulars and some new faces. If anyone has any questions or would like to be involved with TradeUP in anyway please email [email protected] Lastly, but not least... a big shout out to Nicole O'Keefe. The dedication you showed during your time as TradeUP Board Chair was outstanding. Not only have you achieved so much personally but you have helped so many other people and you truly are a role model. Thank you for your efforts. Kara
