17.01.2022 *Are you a dairy farmer? Please tell us how you feel about the future. What effect will milk prices have on your ability to survive or thrive? Seven, six or fi...ve? Dairy farmers wait for price announcement #dairy ACCORDING to those associated with the dairy industry, farming has suffered minimal disruption from Covid-19. The test will come in the coming days, however, when farmers find out whether milk prices across the board start with a seven, six or five. Worst case scenario Rabobanks Australian Dairy Seasonal Outlook has urged caution as COVID-19 diminishes demand, and prices, globally - with a predicted commodity farm gate milk price for 2020/21 across the southern export region sitting as low as 5.20/kgMS. Its an announcement that caused consternation for some, with one industry player who spoke to The Paper saying Rabobank was underselling. But the financial institutions senior dairy analyst, Michael Harvey said the upward trajectory in milk prices enjoyed in late 2019 had now stalled. Around the world, in major dairy markets, demand will inevitably fall as unemployment rises and discretionary spending slows, Mr Harvey said. We forecast modest growth through the spring flush, but, at a time when dairy demand is expected to be considerably weakened, this could have significant consequences on global pricing. He said that under the worst-case scenario, demand would significantly weaken, inventories would build up across supply chains, and dairy commodity prices, particularly in Europe, could fall a further 10 to 15 percent from April 2020 levels. Rabobanks base case scenario for an annualised southern export milk price in 2020/21 stands at AUD 5.70/kgMS. As a result of the current global market forces, Mr Harvey said, more conservative opening prices from Australian dairy exporters were warranted, and that dairy farm businesses should budget accordingly. At the farm gate, better seasonal conditions in 2020/21 would relieve feed costs, while elevated cull cow prices and a buoyant live export sector would also provide opportunity to support business margins. Theres been a period of lower margins, which we expect will continue through the coming season, so dairy farmers will need to carefully consider the financial merits of rebuilding equity versus major investments and/or expansion projects, he said. However we do predict margin respite coming in the form of a return to growth in milk pools, better plant utilisation and signs of peak competition. The Australian milk pool was expected to close out the 2019/20 season at 8.4 billion litres, a 4.9 per cent drop on the previous year, however the report predicted strong growth in 2020/21, pending seasonal conditions, with a 4.3 per cent lift in national milk production forecast. Responding to the pandemic Dairy Australias senior industry analyst Sofia Omstedt said the pandemic and the resultant lockdown had not slowed milk production in Australia. Dairy farmers and processors here in Australia have been diligent and quick to respond to the pandemic and have implemented additional safety procedures to ensure safe production and collection of milk throughout the past months, she told The Paper. As the dairy industry is deemed an essential service this ensured milk could still be picked up from all farms and following an all-of-industry response to the outbreak, new safety procedures were implemented to ensure the safety of all involved across the supply chain. This has meant additional practices put in place for some farmers and processors, but been able to keep milk flowing. However, the virus has created challenges related to the distribution of products to international markets. During the first few months of the outbreak, factory closures in China combined with quarantine measures to curb the spread of COVID-19 implemented created multiple supply chain disruptions, she said. As Chinese ports reduced staff, container availability decreased. This added logistical challenges for Australian exporters, in terms of getting access to shipping containers (particularly reefers), securing shipping slots or accessing packaging materials produced in China. Production has now increased in China and the ports are cleared. This has seen sea cargo routes reinstated and empty containers redistributed globally. This is an encouraging development towards normalised supply chain conditions. There have been no new regulatory issues facing exports of Australia dairy to China since the start of the COVID-19 disruptions. Additionally, due to a drop in passenger flights and consequently less air freight capacity available, air freight prices increased substantially. But with no passenger planes flying from Australia to several countries in southeast Asia, fresh dairy exports to these markets have stalled. The Government has since announced an initiative to deploy flights from capital cities to multiple key export markets, which is set to alleviate some cost pressures and improve availability of airfreight for Australia dairy products, she said. On the ground Leongatha based agri-business advisor Brian Gannon said farmers were waiting to find out what dairy processors would set the milk price at. But theres little time to pause as a dairy farmer, he said. Whether theres coronavirus running rampant through the community or not, theyve still got to conduct their business. Theyve still got cattle to feed and cows to milk, he said. Milk production is up in Gippsland. Its been a phenomenal season, really. He said local farmers were looking for a price in excess of $6. In recent days, Bulla Dairy Foods opened at $6.30 to $6.70 a kilogram of milk solids. Wheels in motion Like Mr Gannon, TTMI Gippsland and TTMI Tasmania chief financial officer Edwin Vandenberg said farm machinery sales in Gippsland were going well, though the future was very much dependent on whether milk prices start with a seven, a six or a five. The instant asset write off has been a major boost to machinery sellers. The Tractor and Machinery Association have been saying how machinery sales are up, predominantly because weve had rain, but also because we have the instant asset write off, he said. He also believes the hangover from the virus may have an effect on the wider economy in July, August and September. Im certainly preparing for the worst and hoping for the best, in terms of that. These are strange times for agriculture and the economy, he said. #farming #thepaper Pictured: Leongatha based agri-business advisor Brian Gannon.
