13.01.2022 So deeply saddened to hear of the death of Rafiki of the Nkuringo Mountain Gorilla family in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest by poachers. Having trekked and spent time with the mountain gorillas in both Uganda and Rwanda, the vulnerability this poses for his family who are left behind is scary and puts them at extremely high risk of disintegration. Rafiki was 25 years old and had been leading his family of 17 mountain gorillas, the first family to be habituated to humans in the s...outhern sector of Bwindi. What a devastating loss delivering a setback to decades-long conservation efforts to pull the subspecies back from the precipice of extinction. Rafiki's family regularly foraged beyond the park boundaries, making it a symbolic group in regard to co-existence with people. With no visitors, protected areas are running on tight budgets that is limiting the number of patrols. Reduced human presence has created a vacuum for poachers to terrorise African key species including elephants. Africa Wild Explorations through their Care for Rangers, a Not-for-Profit Organization has started mobilising resources to support rangers to keep on long patrols.
