25.01.2022 I want to wish you and your family a very happy and healthy holiday. This year many of us have developed an even deeper appreciation of what it means to be able to hold our loved ones close. I know I do.... One of my favorite traditions this time of year is our Christmas Eve workout session. But this year we are doing some things differently. We are still holding our in person session, but we will also be hosting a Christmas Eve Dancercise party ONLINE! YAY! The big takeaway has been that just because things are DIFFERENT, it doesn’t mean they are worse or somehow less special. There’s more to the holidays than our rituals! It’s about enjoying the magic of the season, of giving and sharing. Is there anything different that YOU are doing this year? Let me know below! Happy Holidays!

25.01.2022 Yep - we are still running and better yet, tonights classes are all ONLINE - join us from anywhere :-) Dancercise HIT @ 5.25pm Mindful Mobility @ 6.00pm Dancercise @ 6.35pm... Who's in????

24.01.2022 Check out this great article.... If for nothing else, read it for this quote: "Ruddock hopes that when people see her photos, they walk away knowing that they're perfect.... "I use the word perfect because I think we've been taught that no one is perfect," she explained. "But if you're the only version of yourself, how could you not be the perfect version?"" https://www.cbc.ca//move-over-body-positivity-it-s-time-to

23.01.2022 Serious question: what does the world have to give up to normalize fat like @lizzobeeating is asking in her @voguemagazine B E A U T I F U L cover? Weight... stigma is the reason we see fat as bad as a society. There is money power and privilege behind these beliefs... and a very lucrative #diet industry. There are no small acts. When my 6 year old asked me if she was fat. I didn’t answer. I asked M O R E questions. I wanted to get in her head and help her get it right. First and foremost is there anything wrong with being fat? No! We then talked about fat people we know and love in our friends and family. Importantly, what is wrong is the way we treat people and judge them based on their size. If a 6 year old can get it, grown ups can too. It’s weight stigma awareness week. Thanks to it’s founder @turnunder Chevese Turner, a powerhouse change-maker tireless advocate and thought leader, there will he posts to help educate and inspire people at the hashtag #wsaw2020 I invite you to comment on this post... where do you see weight stigma playing out today and what’s the impact on your life? Let’s not be silent in this issue. I’ll start... all my training in nutrition and exercise... and even my most recent trauma training... all of it has content that upholds weight stigma. Often when weight is discussed it’s assumed that when a person gets better it’s because their weight has gone down. This upholds the trope that smaller is better and healthier, that if higher weight people worked harder they could control their weight and doing so would improve their health. If you’re scratching your head isn’t that true? That’s the power of weight stigma. Anyone with any professional interest in health is getting taught to uphold beliefs about larger bodied people and therefore highly unlikely taught to examine how this is bad for mental health and how we can stop the harm. One powerful way to support change and help Lizzo get what she deserves is through policy. At all levels of society we can impact people’s beliefs and behaviors, instantly giving access to education and tools for change for individuals, families, schools, communities.

Researchers say that having plants around can decrease stress, clean up the air, reduce sickness, and increase productivity by 15%. Plus, having greenery around helps brighten your workspace! If you work from home, make sure you choose a pet-friendly plant (like spider plants, Boston ferns, banana plants, or butterfly palm). Do you have any plants right now in your office or house!? 19.01.2022 The holidays are around the corner! If you’re feeling stressed or anxious ... here's a quick way to turn it around! When you breathe, make your EXHALE longer than your INHALE. (Seriously, try it right now. It’s kind of magical!) This works with your body’s nervous system (through your vagus nerve) to help shut down your body’s stress response AND release feel-good relaxing hormones, helping to calm you! ... For even greater benefit, try to breathe through your nose vs. your mouth. Do you ALREADY do this!? Let me know below REFERENCE: www.psychologytoday.com//longer-exhalations-are-easy-way-h

19.01.2022 I did away with goals for a few years, as I recovered from my own pressure of my constant to do lists and SMART goal setting. And I quite enjoyed running up and down the field never scoring There is absolutely nothing wrong with not having a goal in mind.... everything doesn't have to be about ticking off the list. When (and if) you are ready to set goals/intentions/visions it will be time to set your goals/intentions/visions

19.01.2022 Always make sure to stretch out BEFORE your workout to help improve your performance and strength. ... . . FALSE! Holding stretches (like the runner’s stretch or a quad stretch) isn’t proven to help prevent injury or cut back on post-workout muscle soreness. Plus, it can actually hurt your performance, since researchers believe stretching tires out your muscles. A great idea is to warm-up doing lower-intensity versions of the same movements you’ll be doing during your workouts. These are called dynamic stretches and include brisk walking, leg swings, squats, gentle arm circles, etc. And if you want even MORE flexibility work, do traditional stretches AFTER your workout when your muscles are warm and more mobile. Or stretch out on its own, as a separate workout. REFERENCE: www.webmd.com/fitness-exercise/features/how-to-stretch

16.01.2022 Weight stigma has significant impacts on people in many different ways, both subtle and more overt. Although it is acknowledged that people in all body shapes a...nd sizes can feel critical or negative towards themselves and their bodies, weight stigma is specifically directed towards, and felt most significantly by people in larger bodies. We all absorb ideas about weight, shape and size via strongly socialised messaging, and weight stigma are the specific ways that our biases are enacted in the world. We might think about stigma as something that is perpetrated by unkind individuals, and although this can definitely be the case, it is more often perpetuated by people who simply are not aware of the harms of exclusion. As a group of health professionals, we feel strongly that examining our own weight biases (amongst many other biases that we hold as humans) is one of the keys to reducing the harms of stigma. The impact of weight stigma can be catastrophic, resulting in delayed or denied healthcare, reduced opportunities in educational and workplace settings, increased allostatic load (the wear and tear on a body that occurs with repeated or chronic exposure of stress) and greater risk of health conditions such as cardiovascular disease, hypertension and type 2 diabetes. Weight stigma in and of itself directly contributes to illhealth - physical, social, emotional and psychological. This week, we encourage you to learn more about weight stigma and join us for important conversations. https://www.haesaustralia.org.au/weight-stigma-awareness-we. Who are we? HAES Australia, as a group of individual health practitioners, is an organisation working to address weight stigma, notably in healthcare. 14.01.2022 Here’s a to help keep you motivated whether it’s for your workouts or anything else you’re doing in your life. Are you ready? It’s TAKING THE PATH OF LEAST RESISTANCE. This is actually backed by science! Researchers at University College London found that people in a study naturally chose tasks that required the LEAST effort without even realising they were making that choice!... Whenever given options, they naturally gravitated toward the easiest ones. Since many people tend to skip their workouts - let’s talk about how you can apply this principle in your own life: Some days you will naturally be more motivated than others. Here’s what to do instead of skipping your workout altogether, or being discouraged on those days you aren’t feeling it. Do a workout you find the easiest! That could be taking a walk or stretching out vs. running or lifting weights. During the workout, you might find your motivation returns thanks to the feel-good hormones that your body releases in response to exercise and it will spur you to do more. Or, you might find that you’re happy with the least amount. Either way, you will have gotten a workout in, and helped reinforce your healthy habits! You can apply this strategy to ANYTHING in your life that you’re trying to accomplish if you’re having a hard time getting motivated. Something is ALWAYS better than nothing. Wouldn’t you agree? And as Lisa-Marie always says... "Your job is just to turn up - I'll deal with the rest" What do you think?! Let me know below REFERENCE: https://elifesciences.org/articles/18422

11.01.2022 If you need a dose of motivation to finish 2020 strong, try this: Look through your email contacts or social media followers/friends lists for the names of 5-7 people who have inspired you in the past. It could be someone whose work you admire someone pushed you to work harder at a job or in school who posts inspirational content that you enjoy ... or whose philosophies in the gym or on the playing field made you feel better about yourself! ... Then, every day for the next 5-7 days choose one of them to message with a thank you and be sure to tell them the impact they made on you! This can help break you out of a rut and rev up your own motivation! Plus, it’s a great way to pay it forward. Try it and see. :)

09.01.2022 42%! That’s how much MORE likely you’ll be to reach your goals if you write them down. How about if you write them down 5x EVERY morning!? Well we don’t know for sure, but we DO know it’s insanely powerful. And if it’s something you’re having a hard time staying on track with, it’s an easy way to help prime your brain for SUCCESS! ... Every morning while you’re drinking your tea or coffee, or eating breakfast grab a notebook and write down ONE of your goals 5 times. 1Just ONE Goal. Are you willing to give this a try? 09.01.2022 ! My cure for staying on-track with my workouts Have a plan in place so that 1) I have a clear purpose AND 2) there’s no guesswork involved.... This keeps everything simple! I find that if I know I already have something planned, I’m more likely to get it done. We can get something called decision fatigue if we have to make too many choices every day. Having a plan ahead of time means I don’t have to make any decisions! Today, my workout is a resistance plan with some nice mobility for good measure. Did you know that in order for me to stop overthinking, and because I obviously believe everyone should have a trainer, I have my very own trainer that I follow. SHOUTOUT to It's Jenna J for creating kick ass programs and also allowing me to listen to my body while doing them. Check her out! What are YOU doing this week for your workouts? Do you have a plan? 06.01.2022 -- THIS is how I keep my goals in the front of my mind, to help keep me focused. You know that old saying, Out of sight, out of mind?... Well, this is how I keep my goals FRONT AND CENTRE. I keep a reminder of the things I want to do close by - this is my 'spiral up' list from Body Kindness which is a little list of small goals I want to achieve most days. It sits on my window above where I work to remind me. I also love leaving myself notes on my bathroom mirror for more specific goals... what to see what I have up there now? At least once a day, I make time to look at this with INTENTION, to keep me fired up and on track with my goals. Do you create any personal reminders about your goals? Maybe a phone background? A vision board? An app you use? Something else? If you do, let’s see a pic or let me know what YOU do below

06.01.2022 ’ ! It’s by doing the absolute bare minimum! Sounds crazy but stick with me I make it a priority because I KNOW that my body (and mind) loves to move. And I make it a priority because I do the smallest amount of movement needed - a couple of tuck and tilts here, a round of tabata there. It all adds up to making me feel great!... and I do NOT want to start the new year not feeling as good as I could feel. Just a side note: if you’re on my email list, it’s almost time for me to send out my holiday workout challenge! If you’re not, you can get in on the action by signing up. My workout plan means that once I show up from my workout, I don't have to think too much about it - of course there is flexibility in my plan, and I still ensure I listen to my body, but I have a rough outline to... follow along with. And music? Well, I don't do much without music, so a pumping playlist that matches my workout mood is a must!
