25.01.2022 Gorgeous QH x Maple will be ready for her first ride very soon. Maple will be for sale once started under saddle. I absolutely love this gorgeous girl ... *first pic in Summer coat

25.01.2022 Stable block makeover coming along nicely. Wentworth modelling

24.01.2022 Young Levi has a few challenges that he needs some help with. Very head shy and can be highly reactive. He seems incredibly sweet and I hope in the 4 weeks he is here I can help him gain confidence and help him be the horse his new owner hopes he can be! I don't advocate the wearing of halters in paddocks, but in this particular case it is necessary. It would absolutely not be on in normal circumstances.

24.01.2022 Mighty Mouse having a check in with me. My daughter has done 9 days of starting training with him thus far. This was his first canter on line. Mouse will be available for purchase in December for a very lucky child to enjoy!

23.01.2022 I absolutely love when an owner says to me "I want to start at the beginning" with their horse and they genuinely mean it. I met the beautiful curious and yet internally fraught Archie today. His sweet curiosity obvious with him meeting us at the gate, his carefully veiled worry however also quickly apparent with little signals when the halter appeared.... I said to his mum, he will probably have a good lie down this afternoon after our ground work getting to know Archie.

22.01.2022 Looking forward to this mating. PHAA black tobiano mare 'Margarita' arrives early next month to be bred to Oakhill Wana B A Pepto. Fingers crossed these two produce us something pretty special!

22.01.2022 It is not my job to demand of, nor to bully a horse into submission It is instead, my job to prepare sufficiently well enough on the ground that when I get on to ride, that my horse easily understands my requests and has confidence and a calm relaxed manner. This makes my *job* of starting not only simple and easy for me, but as stress free and easy for the horse as it can possibly be too.... I want to as much as possible stay out of their way, not inhibit natural movement and ability - instead softly guide where necessary, kindly correct when needed and build a confident, brave, happy and capable horse under saddle. Challenge the old ideas of 'breaking' in and begin to think of 'starting' as purely another step in a thorough education from the ground up. My question always is - so your trainer can ride your breaker, but when it comes home can you do so with complete confidence? Choose who starts your horse carefully. Scroll down my page for videos of Brumby Matilda on her 3rd ride being started at Trakerstead Ranch.

20.01.2022 Read that again.... "We only get what we believe we deserve. Raise the bar, raise your standards and you will receive a better outcome"

19.01.2022 Building better connections with Tye.

19.01.2022 Just as well one of us has our Post ISO facial hair under control Wentworth

19.01.2022 ***just uploading here as I can't upload two videos on one post on my work page. Getting to know Jed: Here for a two week evaluation.... 12 year old ASH gelding with long term behavioural issues under saddle, here are some description of Jed from his owner; "Jed can be super anxious to the point of unpredictable and dangerous. He is very up and down and inconsistent. He becomes a brumby if he has a long spell. When he is good he is gorgeous but on a bad day its not fun. He's always seemed a bit switched off to me... I thought that it was just him getting used to his new life but he hasnt really changed. Ever since I’ve owned Jed he presents himself either as super relaxed or highly anxious" All horses, regardless of age, regardless of being 'clean slate' breakers, or older horses with behavioural issues - we START AT THE START Yesterday we saw a video of Jed blocking me from approaching his near side. He was telling me he wasn't comfortable with me there - Most people may not even identify this, or if they did see it, would just push by to get to the best side to catch / lead / tack up / get on etc...All the while ignoring that small quiet suggestion from a horse trying to communicate a non acceptance. Today I'm sharing another two videos: First is of my 10 year old Appaloosa displaying an ideal response to my approach. And secondly Jed's reaction. Bear in mind this exercise is actually called 'RUN up and rub, but I couldn't run up to Jed at this point in time as I'd probably lose him half way across the yard! What differences can you see in these two ridden geldings of similar age?

18.01.2022 Trakerstead owned, raised and trained Appaloosas: Danneker I See Spots - Denny Skipa Clu Betty Boop - Matisse... School horse lessons will become available again soon. Denny is suitable for more experienced riders as is an educated responsive ride. For the beginners I will have his dam Matisse - she only does walk/jog and is very slow so is great for those needing to build confidence or just starting out. School horses with all gear supplied & instruction will be $75 an hour.

18.01.2022 Congratulations to the new owners of our absolutely perfect made to order filly by Trakerstead owned "Oakhill Wana B A Pepto x Dun It In Lace" Currently nameless, waiting for her excited new mum to get back home to meet her!

18.01.2022 Levi is exceptionally head shy and difficult to catch, so just teaching him I can touch his face without grabbing him.

17.01.2022 THIS WEEK *Wednesday 20th 10am - 12 **NO THURSDAY THIS WEEK** *Friday 22nd 10am - 12... Bookings essential Please pm or text

16.01.2022 Nothing quite like the relief of a horse coming home after a week at the vets with colic. Love you Baby Blue and would be lost without you in my world.

14.01.2022 Horse-people mostly think about horses from a humanistic perspective. The use of derogatory terms such as 'nasty', 'stubborn' or 'lazy' and the emphasis on the ...horse's 'attitude' can blur training so that when training doesn't work we excuse ourselves by blaming the horse. Such terms imply the horse is 'born that way' and will never change. While horses vary in their genetic tendencies to behave in particular ways, these characteristics have significant learned components and can, therefore, be unlearned or suppressed, and better still avoided. Humanistic terms disempower us as trainers because they provide no useful answers for retraining the 'problem' or difficult horse. Worse, they lead to beliefs that place unfair expectations on the horse and often create further conflict through punishments and incorrect reinforcement strategies that are beyond the horse's mental abilities. More horses would succeed to higher levels and fewer would be wasted if training were more closely aligned with the horse's learning capabilities from the start; prevention is always better than cure. Furthermore, learning can be accelerated in all horses to optimal levels when trainers fully understand what they are doing beyond 'second nature' functional abilities. It is every horse-person's responsibility to understand the horse as completely as possible. Evidence-based horse training is our way to protect the welfare of the horse. Deep dive into this matter with our Academic Horse Training book: https://www.esi-education.com/prod/academic-horse-training/ (Excerpt from the 'Academic Horse Training' book, p. 9)

09.01.2022 Cold out today. Come back spring sunshine!

08.01.2022 Holly is a seven year old Paint mare who came to me after sitting in the paddock for a few years after a previous trauma being started under saddle. Yesterday h...er owner came to visit her for the first time. The following (edited for ease of reading) are her words.... ‘YESTERDAY was a big day for me but so worth it I waited pretty much half my life for this moment - to sit on, have a ride on my Intensity foal. I had to have one ! Ever since I had seen article of him in magazine as 2yr old 2 x reserve world champion with his crystal blue eyes and striking markings and blonde mane and tail . I dealt with depression anxiety as a teen, I’m a survivor of abuse domestic violence ,home invasions , torture, when I say I’m survivor that person wanted to murder me . 14 yrs of my life I’ve dealt with it, but still now 14 yrs later you don’t get past it. I’d get my western magazines at school instead of doing my homework, school work I’d be sneakily reading my magazines or on school computer looking at Intensity’s foal crop for the yr, that was my coping mechanism. I’d have posters all over my wall dreaming just hoping one day I’d have a foal by him. Holly means more then i can express, the Holly that didn’t yet exist got me through my darkest days yrs of my life. That opportunity came many yrs later I had no job or income, mum said to me ‘ why don’t you draw pictures and sell them?’ well I did, I drew the most terrible sketches but they were selling for $20. You can imagine a filly of such quality value i had my work cut out for me. I raced to the bank when I came up with my $500 deposit. I was crying at the bank with joy ! She travelled from nsw to vic. What arrived was the most striking animal I ever laid eyes on, with personality to boot. I then had next goal which was to send her to a western pleasure trainer, they were showing at top level I thought I couldn’t go wrong. How blinded I was - because I’m a novice and I did not do my homework well enough I made a very very poor choice in trainer which broke my horse another way. Day one of training she was hard tied to a rail and saddle she went ballistic smashing her face into the rail, also on her first day she ended up at vets : a split lip and a severe gash to hind quarters about 30 stitches and 2 drainage tubes. I was told it was superficial not deep nothing to worry about. A week later she was back in work, I believed everything was ok, how wrong i was. She was saddled , bridled , long reined , bags on , but was told she was a bronc. She would not stop bucking she did not care where she was going or who was in the way, even at exhaustion she still fought, they couldn’t stop it. I found out from someone who visited the property..that they tied her head around to saddle, so when she bucked they flipped her over to discourage ....the bucking it took many sedations just to get 2 front shoes on. I was told the farrier was going to flog her, maybe he did because she defiantly didn’t like the farrier touching her she’d panic rear up and ..flip over whilst sedated. Then after fariers visit they saddled her up and she still fought. They sent her home as she was too dangerous and she’d also struck out at them. I was told she’d never be rideable that she was to phsycho . What come off the truck was not the horse i sent off. She was underweight , lethargic, covered in dry sweat was sooo thick in her coat was like she was dusted with snow , she was very lame i couldn’t get anywhere near her after transporter let her go. It took about 3 to 4 days before I could get anywhere near her - ears flat on the head would turn away, never seen my horse hostile ever...was so not my horse . When she finally came up for a pat I burst into tears because it became more clear her injuries : her face was covered in cuts marks and across the bridge of her nose was large swelling, very badly sunburnt, her eyes were empty was like no one was home and she would look away, marks on front legs badly swollen fetlock which was x-rayed tendon ,ligament damage, girth sores, topline was gone, hind end legs marked up, stifle joints both sides, had identical sores, her injury to hind end had not been well cared for and took many months to close up - it turned out it was damage to her hamstring, it altered her movement. She was very short on the gait and had a very exaggerated slapping of the hoof and some days it was difficult for her, she tried trotting one day and fell over her ase end bit the dirt. I had dentist out when she hit her face whilst hard tied to rail - she had knocked out a tooth. I had a body worker come out and assess her - I have pages of the problems she had, and many vet bills. We had lots of help and support with that <3 I was left with many problems and injuries I haven’t listed . I have the photos , she was very head shy and any pressure on the lead the halter she’d rear up and flip over come over top of you with panic. We had some great help getting passéd the flipping thanks to Karen Fischer’s clinics, but also being able to address that issue in a safer environment with people around . In that time also I came home to find that she empaled herself on a start picket and tore it out her side down to her ribs and torn back a fair way. I thought then that would be 100 % no ridden career as it was in line with girth and where saddle sits for the severity of the injury and those that witnessed it healed amazing. I’ve had many fears about sending her away as I wasn’t sure how she’d go on many levels. Her injuries, will she be sound enough, will she cope, will she have a crazy over load hurt herself, be put to sleep, will she kill or injure someone? This horse means so much to me for many reasons and thought of losing her was unbearable. Her fears and reactions became my fears and worry. I’d pussy foot around alot of things to avoid a situation, but I also put my big girl panties on and dealt with some things. We hit a brick wall with the issues, but alot of that was me . Sending Holly to Tay was best decision I’ve made in my life..and for my horse ive watched her grow and become a confident and accepting horse, a horse that can cope. I have alot to take on board , but I’m determined not to let my horse down and i will not let Tay down as she’s done alot of work to get her to where she is. I honestly did not think it was possible i thought she had been too far gone . Tay said she try her best no promises ..but hell she’s done amazing job and my horse is getting the best care , she looks amazing. I’m determined to do something with this horse I’m not sure what just yet, but as I sat on my horse for the first time I can’t tell you what i felt exactly, but it was utter joy and shock all in one it was surreal. Holly will set a example for other horses and people that have and are going through same thing that there is hope and that there is a chance. Never give up on your horse, when you think all is lost and never give up on the dream. I’ll honestly be forever ever thankful for the opportunity me and my horse have been given. I’ve lost alot of my fears and worries and i can finally look to the future and keep dreaming <3

02.01.2022 So I thought I'd share this little video of Howdy, with a bit of background on her and why I'm doing what I do here. Howdy came to me with a particular undesira...ble behaviour under saddle. So as you guys know, with any and every horse, we start in the round pen and work from the ground up. It's important to remember that issues actually have a root cause, and in order to have a positive effect we need to address the cause, not the issue itself. I very quickly discovered Howdy had an extremely low tolerance of pressure. She pretty much thought every pressure meant MOVE! And MOVE FAST! She lacked coping skills as a result. She was an anxious panicky horse. I had to teach her what different pressures meant , when to move (calmly not reactively), when to stand still, how to think and respond and become calmer and less worried. Her fear of ropes around her legs would be some of the worst reactive fear I have ever seen. I have spent countless hours working with her with desensitization exercises and leg restraint exercises like 'lead by the foot' My biggest focus with Howdy has been to show her she always has the option to move / leave if she needs to. She is not forcibly restrained with removal of the option to move her feet. This has helped remove her panic mode and create confidence. In this short clip I'm demonstrating how Howdy has learned to stop moving when she feels pressure vs panicking and speeding up / running away. To see her understanding when to go, when to stop and how to use the rational thinking side of her brain is awesome. Howdy as an older horse, is not an easy 'fix' , but she now has a good foundation to go home with and have her owner help her progress forward with confidence and without fear. If her homework is adhered to, Howdy should continue to progress and get better and better and hopefully be the enjoyable riding horse her owners would love to have.
